“You didn’t care if I lived or died, but now you care about my phone?”

She continued, her voice slow and deliberate. “Let me remind you, Jake – on the day I was kidnapped, while you were holding a wedding for Vivian, we broke up.”

Jake frowned.

He didn’t like hearing the word break up from her mouth.

If she hadn’t brought it up that day, maybe he wouldn’t have reacted so coldly.

He let out a soft scoff, voice tinged with mockery.

“If it wasn’t for me just now, Margaret would’ve crushed you completely. Laura, you sure have a sharp tongue when it comes to me, but with the Depp family, you’re nothing but a pushover. What, does your temper only work on me?”

Five years together – he knew exactly how to strike a nerve.

But this time, Laura didn’t get angry.

Instead, she chuckled, completely indifferent, as if she were speaking to a stranger.

“Oh, right. Thanks for earlier. Let’s just call it my breakup compensation for the five years I wasted on you.”

Her detached, emotionless attitude made Jake’s brows furrow even tighter.

He didn’t believe Laura truly wanted to break up.

If she wanted to be favored in the Depp family, she needed his support to keep Jasper and Julia in check.

This was just her way of throwing a tantrum, protesting his wedding with Vivian.

He took a step closer, his tone softening slightly.

“You’ve been giving me the silent treatment for days. You even pulled that whole kidnapping stunt. Fine, Laura, I won’t hold it against you.”

He continued, “The wedding with Vivian was just to fulfill her last wish. If it really bothers you that much, I promise our wedding will be even more grand.”

His tone was so condescending – like he was granting her a favor, giving her the greatest possible compromise.

Laura found it utterly laughable.

She had loved this man for five years, yet he didn’t understand her at all.

He actually believed the kidnapping was something she orchestrated, just to get his attention.

At that moment, she realized just how foolish she had been.

She took another step back.

Her heels were now only half a meter from the pool’s edge.

Every fiber of her being rejected Jake’s presence.

Her lips curled into a mocking smirk. “Jake, you really think a more luxurious wedding will make me forgive you? That I’ll go back to waiting for you like before?”

She continued, “I’m completely done with you. In fact, I sincerely hope you and Vivian are locked together forever. A fake wedding is so boring – you should go ahead and make it real.”

Jake’s expression darkened.

In the past, as long as he told Laura he wouldn’t hold a grudge and offered her a more extravagant wedding, she would always take the chance to make up with him.

But tonight, she was different.

She felt unfamiliar.

And it irritated him.

Pressing his fingers against his temples, he forced himself to be patient.

“Laura, stop being dramatic. My patience is limited. Just tell me what you want, and I’ll consider it as compensation.”

Laura was about to respond when, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted someone.

Vivian.

Dressed in a white gown, standing at the villa entrance, looking as delicate and frail as ever.

Laura’s lips curled into a smirk.

Jake, if you truly care about me, then tonight, in front of everyone, choose me over Vivian.

Just once.

Laura wasn’t actually giving Jake a chance.

She knew perfectly well that he would never choose her over Vivian.

The moment Vivian had any kind of “episode,” Jake would drop everything for her.

She remembered her own birthday this year. She had been about to blow out the candles and make a wish when Jake got a call from Vivian.

Without hesitation, he left.

Leaving her and a room full of friends awkwardly staring at the uneaten cake.

…

Meanwhile, Vivian had confidently entered the Depp family’s banquet hall with a proper invitation.

Julia’s face immediately darkened. “Who let her in? What the hell is wrong with you people?”

The servants shrank back, none of them daring to answer.

With an air of authority, Julia stormed over and blocked Vivian’s path, her voice sharp. “Miss Smith, this is the Depp family’s private event. What exactly are you doing here?”

Vivian stood there, completely unbothered. Her tone was perfectly polite.

“Mrs. Depp, hello. I’m here to see Laura.”

Julia looked her up and down, sizing her up with disdain.

A cheap, manipulative little homewrecker.

Julia’s voice was dripping with contempt. “Mrs. Depp? The mere sound of you calling me that is an insult. The Depp family does not welcome you. Leave immediately, before I have security throw you out.”

…

By the poolside, Jake and Laura could see everything through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Julia was standing there with the servants, looking like she was bullying the poor, weak Vivian.

They couldn’t hear the conversation, but it wasn’t hard to guess what Julia was saying.

Laura watched the scene with amusement before shifting her gaze to Jake.

His expression didn’t change, but his brow furrowed ever so slightly.

Laura knew him too well.

That was the prelude to his anger.

Sure enough, Vivian’s eyes darted around until she spotted him by the pool.

Without a second thought, she ignored Julia entirely and ran straight toward them.

She moved gracefully despite her haste.

Tonight, she wore a white spaghetti-strap dress, a soft pink knitted shawl draped over her shoulders.

Her face was pale, her long hair flowing as she ran. Every detail, from her makeup to her delicate outfit, was meticulously planned to perfection.

Breathlessly, she called out, “Jake.”

Then, as if suddenly noticing Laura’s presence, she forced a warm, friendly smile. “Laura.”

Jake’s expression remained unreadable. His voice was low. “Why are you here?”

Vivian bit her lip. “I came to apologize to Laura about the wedding. I didn’t realize the Depp family was hosting an event tonight.”

Came looking for Laura? To apologize?

How ridiculous.

If Vivian really wanted to apologize, why wouldn’t she do it privately? Why show up at the Depp family’s banquet?
