My gaze landed on Irene instead and I felt the need to go to her and ask her what made her say that to me yesterday.
I walked up to her and sat beside her, staying silent for the first few minutes. She also stayed silent just as she always did. “Irene” I eventually called.
“So… You want to ask me why I said that yesterday? You don’t believe me, do you?” Irene asked, raising her head and pushing her dark hair back.
“I do now” I mumbled and saw her eyes squint.
“You saw something?” She asked.
“How did you know?”
“Cause I know you trust Francesca so much that you would never believe she is not really your friend until you catch her being your big time hater” She replied and I felt my heart ache again.
“Have you even ever wondered why she has so much friends and only a few hang out with you?” Irene questioned. 1
“That is because she makes sure she ruins your image. She paints you as selfish, greedy, proud and tells others that it is a huge work to be friends with you” She added and I felt my eyes swell with tears.
I had thought the reason I had few girls talking to me was because they saw me as less social. Why exactly would Francesca do all of these to me? When did she start hating me?
Thinking about it now, I could not trust that she was saying the truth about the camera found in the teddy bear she gave to me. “Good thing you found out now. You should build your own life now, without that piece of shit” Irene said and lowered her gaze back to the floor, falling silent once more.
I could feel my heart breaking and hurting for long minutes. It took a while for me to pull myself back together and do a quick revision for the test which would be starting in half an hour.
I didn’t see Francesca till we were done with the tests and I was just going to leave school and go home or anywhere else where I knew Francesca just could not be but I wasn’t so lucky as I saw her approaching me with Bryant by her side.
There sight angered me, made my insides boil but I held it all back. I had cried enough yesterday and even earlier this morning while taking a bath. I could nto shed a single tear in front of her. 2
I held my head up high with confidence as she stopped in front of me with Bryant.
“How are you doing, Lisa?” She had the guts to actually ask.
“Can you get out of my face? Don’t block the beauty of this day with the ugly face of a betrayer” I said as carelessly as I could and I saw the smirk on her face get wiped off. 2
“Call me a betrayer or whatever you want to call me but I am really not. I just chose myself over you. Bryant was so good” She cooed and turned to face him, kissing his lips.
My insides churned with disgust at the sight in front of me.
“I don’t want to be violent, Francesca. Get out of my face right now or stand a chance to get your face swollen for the next two weeks” I threatened, my breathing getting heavier but her smirk just got bigger. It was obvious that she was liking the fact that I was getting mad.
“What exactly did I do to you to deserve this from you, Francesca? I took you as my best friend for so many years. I loved you. What could I have done to deserve all these hatred?” I could not help but ask and I so hated myself for asking, especially in that soft, sad tone that had my eyes watering.
Francesca leaned close to me. Really close to me and whispered into my ears.
“You are so selfish, always having everything without begging for it. I was never your friend. Took you long enough to realize, though.” She pulled away from me with that crazy smirk on her face and took a few steps back to get to Bryant. 1
“I and my man are leaving now. Sorry you have no man and won’t be finding one as hot as Bryant”
“I have a man” I blurted the words out just to save myself from the insult.
Francesca stopped, eyed me and then laughed.
“Hell to me if I believe that trash” She laughed.
“I have someone and unlike what you think, he is fucking hot…” Now, I was talking about Lucius Devine.
“And also filthy rich. I was so damn stupid to glance at this trash named Bryant. Such a watered down creation”
“Don’t you dare call me trash” Bryant walked up to me with a threatening stance but I didn’t move an inch or cower away. “What? You don’t like being called what you are? You are in denial?”
“Don’t fucking talk to me like that, slut. Got dumped last night and you just jumped onto some rich man you could find. You are exactly…” I cut him off with a slap.
I wasn’t standing there and listening to him talk me down when he was the bastard.
“You slapped me? You are going to so fucking regret that” He threatened.
“Maybe she should regret it right now” Francesca added and before I could comprehend what was happening, she had slapped me, hard across the face.
The physical pain and the emotional pain hit as she grabbed Bryant’s hand and walked off. I could not help myself from bursting into tears as I crouched down to the floor.
AUTHOR’S POV
“You did not have to slap her back though” Bryant mumbled to Francesca who immediately shot him a hard look.
“What the hell are you saying? She slapped you, of course I needed to do something back to her” Francesca replied.
“I mean we could just have left anyways.”
“No, you mean that you deserved to be slapped by her because you made the better decision choosing me” Francesca stated and Bryant sighed softly.
“That’s not what I meant. Fine, she deserved that slap” Bryant gave in.
“Exactly” Francesca mumbled.
She had loved the pains in Lisa’s eyes and loved seeing her break down in tears.
Francesca smirked, realising that she was the biggest loss Lisa ever had.
Just then, her phone rang. Francesca reached into her bag for the phone and pulled it out. It was a call from her big brother. “Just a minute” she said to Bryant and picked up the call, walking a few steps away from Bryant.
“Hey Dave”
“Hey” her brother called back, his voice awfully low.
“What happened with you? You sound so down” Francesca noted.
“I lost my job” Her brother replied and Francesca gasped softly.
“Oh my! That’s bad. For what reason?”
“I have no idea, Francesca” he sounded close to being depressed.
“But you can get another one soon, right?” Francesca asked, not understanding why her brother was sounding like his entire life had come to an end because he lost his job.
“I could get another one but I am not sure how easy that would be. Firstly, I heard my being sacked is because it was ordered by some higher up. I don’t even recall offending anyone. I don’t know what I did wrong and you know what is worse?” He asked.
“What more happened?” Francesca questioned.
“Mum and dad also lost their jobs a few hours ago”
“Oh my god!” Francesca felt an instant headache now. She had just lost Lisa who was one of her biggest financial supports and now her entire family had mysteriously lost their jobs on the same very day.
“How in the world? This is definitely not a coincidence” she mumbled.
“Of course it isn’t but even mum and dad have no idea what they did wrong.” Dave replied and Francesca sighed.
