Chapter 181 – A Little Princess’s Journey from Darkness to Light Novel

And if Blondie wasn’t a corpse but a human being, that would mean intentional murder. She had waited for the woman to jump in and then dragged her underwater. Absolutely no one was willing to go down there!

Some people looked at Blake. Thankfully, he

had stopped them, or they would have gotten into trouble along with the middle-aged man.

Just then, a boat arrived.

The people on the boat had a better view. One of the rescue team members, a young man named Greg, shouted, “We’ve found it! We found it…”

The team saw a struggling woman and what appeared to be a floating corpse. They prepared to go over and help.

A senior member called out, “Keep a close eye, Greg!”

Greg, overwhelmed with emotion, had finally found the body of the girl who had drowned after searching for an entire day. The body was wearing clothes that matched the description of the girl…

In the next moment, he saw the corpse rise and drag the struggling woman underwater!

“F*ck me!” Greg cried out in terror.

He could clearly see that it was a floating corpse. Having fished up numerous dead bodies before, he knew one when he saw one.

Could corpses really drag people underwater?!

Greg felt as if his head was about to explode. Every hair on his body stood on end.

“C-c-captain!” he cried out.

The captain quickly walked over with a rope in his hands. “Why are you acting as if you’ve seen a ghost? Get them!”

“Hey, where did they go? I just turned around for a second!”

Another kayak approached from the opposite direction. The tools needed to haul a dead body and a live person were different, so they quickly changed the nets and worked together to pull both individuals up.

The female corpse and the middle-aged woman were retrieved from the water. Everyone saw the dead body twitch, and they thought they were hallucinating.

Greg’s eyes widened. “C-c-c-captain!”

The captain was also in shock. “I saw, I saw. Keep quiet!”

The woman was the first to be pulled up, and the rescue team immediately began their work.

She quickly spat out a mouthful of water and slowly regained consciousness.

Upon awakening, she scrambled to her feet and screamed, “Jane, my Jane…”

“Quick, save my daughter!”

The rescue team captain held her down. “Your daughter has been brought ashore. We understand how you’re feeling. Please take your time to grieve!”

The woman was startled. “What… what do you mean?”

Does that mean my daughter is dead?

No, no. The other two girls were rescued. Why did only my daughter die?

She refused to believe it!

The woman clutched the edge of the boat, muttering to herself, “I don’t believe you! You’ve got the wrong body! I just saw my Jane. I’m going to get her myself… I’ll get her myself if you won’t help!”

She attempted to jump into the water, ignoring everyone’s pleas.

The onlookers didn’t know what to say, but this wasn’t the first time they had witnessed someone losing control like this.

Having worked on the rescue team for years, they knew that family members would usually cling to any last shred of hope that their loved ones were still alive before seeing the body.

After the body was finally retrieved, some family members would faint on the spot. Some would break down and refuse to accept it, and a few would even blame the team members for arriving too late…

The woman was forcefully held down, and she turned to look at the corpse covered in a blue tarp. The tarp was lifted, and indeed, it was her daughter.

The woman collapsed to the ground, thrashing around and attacking Greg, who happened to be closest to her!

“What’s the point of you working here? Why did you only find my daughter now? Shouldn’t it be easy to retrieve a dead body? You’re all bloody useless, searching for a whole day for this to happen! You’re the reason my daughter’s dead!”

“You should be dead! All of you should be dead!”

She sobbed and screamed. Greg’s chest ached as he listened.

As a rescue team member, the joy of saving someone alive was barely enough to ease the heaviness that came from retrieving a dead body. It was enough that this time it had been the latter, and now they were all being cursed by the deceased’s loved ones.

The passion Greg had when he first joined the rescue team was slowly fading, replaced by a sense of hopelessness in humanity…

Was there really a point to all of this?

The woman continued to scream and curse as they reached the shore.

Blake held Lilly as they waited by the riverbank. Rumor had it that both people had been pulled out, and a crowd was gathering.

Lilly’s chest thumped uncomfortably as the woman continued to scream. At only four years old, she felt a wave of annoyance.

“Stop yelling!” she suddenly cried out. “You’re the useless one! You’re the most useless! All you do is cause trouble, and you don’t listen when people tell you not to do something, then you scream and yell at others! You’re a coward!”

The child was so angry that she used a word she had learned from television. “Coward”.

She truly believed that this lady was being a real pain. It was tragic that she had lost her daughter, but she shouldn’t be cursing at other people like this!

Everyone else nodded in agreement.

“Yes, that’s right. It’s not easy to be a rescue team member! They’re not making any money from doing this. What right do you have to yell like this…”

“Were they wrong for helping?”

The more hot-tempered onlookers continued to curse. “I think you, as the mother, are more at fault! Couldn’t you have watched your own daughter? All you know how to do is blame others!”

The more mild-tempered individuals did their best to mediate. “Alright, alright, that’s enough. She’s going through a difficult time. She just lost her daughter…”

Blake pursed his lips, gazing coldly at the crowd in front of him. He had developed a cold exterior from the bloodshed he had witnessed, and this situation didn’t affect him much.

However, Lilly managed to break free from his grip and silently approached the young man who was packing up nearby.

Greg was in the process of packing up the ropes, feeling an overwhelming weight on his chest that made it difficult to breathe. After a long day of work, all he felt was extreme fatigue.

In fact, he was so exhausted that he contemplated never returning to work again.

Suddenly, a small hand reached out and gently held his arm. Greg came to a halt.

A little girl looked up at him and spoke in a serious tone. “Thank you for your hard work, Sir. You’ve done a great job!”

“You’re amazing, Sir! You’re like a superhero!”

As Greg stared into her wide, jet-black eyes and saw her sincere and serious expression, he felt a lump in his throat and his eyes began to well up with tears.

“Thank you…”

The little girl’s father approached, lifting her up into the air.

She waved goodbye, and Greg hurriedly waved back.

Whoever said being a hero was all about glory?

Greg smiled, wiping his eyes and murmuring,

“Thank you…”
