I see now that all of that had simply been a fantasy, nothing more than a childish dream that soon crashed and burned like everything else good in my life.

I don’t resist when I’m met with my own pack’s enforcers at the border, my body too tired to do anything but comply as they forcefully drag me back over the pack border and to Daniel’s estate.

He’s already waiting for me. His large fireplace casts a long silhouette of him that dances along with the flames behind him.

“Leave us,” he says once I’m dropped at his feet.

I don’t bother getting up, knowing that I’ll be thrown down into the cellar soon enough. I’ll rot away down there, probably not even long enough to actually give birth. I’ll die with my baby still inside of me. And while that thought hurts me to my very soul, it also comforts me.

My baby will be safe with me and won’t be forced to live out their life with these monsters constantly making them feel as I have these past nine years.

“Did you have a nice trip?” Daniel asks, the amusement in his tone palpable. “Was your reunion what you thought it would be?”

Bleeding through my numbness is a small spark of anger.

I had a suspicion that this was all orchestrated by Daniel, but now I have it coming from the horse’s mouth.

“Tell me something, Grace,” he asks. “When you finally saw him again, was he as disgusted to see you as I was? Did he read that letter to you?”

My teeth grit together.

How dare he mock me? Isn’t it enough that he already got everything he wanted by completely destroying any hope of me being with Theodore? Of having a better life for myself, one that wasn’t endless punishment?

He chuckles to himself. “I have to admit, finding someone to mimic your handwriting was hard. But wouldn’t you know, my little Sonia was so good at it she didn’t even need to trace over the letters to get them perfect.”

Fuck him.

Fuck all of them.

I’m powerless to stop any of this and am at the very mercy of what he’ll do to me now. My heart breaks for the future I could’ve had-for my baby too. What life could my baby have lived if I was just simply let go?

Daniel could’ve cut his losses, let me leave and never return. I would be someone else’s problem then.

But no. He has always been too greedy. His need for control and power is insatiable. I’d broken the rules by sleeping with Theodore. The ultimate betrayal had been getting pregnant with an alpha king’s heir.

And now Daniel will punish me by snuffing out our lives. He can’t let me have this baby. Not if it means in eighteen years, my child will grow up to know the truth, know the heritage that they come from. That could end Daniel entirely.

War would be waged if Theodore were to ever find out the truth about the lies that were told to him.

Daniel’s only way to protect himself is to get rid of me once and for all.

My anger turns to anguish. I weep at his feet as reality hits me. My hand finds my stomach, cupping protectively over the small life that I will never get to meet. It’s so unfair.

Daniel laughs, most likely smelling my tears. “I’m glad you could go there and see for yourself, Grace. There are no other options for you.”

I want to scream but I don’t have the energy left in me.

“Tomorrow, you will be cast out from the pack. I will relinquish my rights over you and you will go to live with the one I’ve arranged to come pick you up.”

It takes a long second for the words to register, my head still swimming from the agony of being rejected by my mate.

I slowly lift my head, tears streaming down my cheeks. “What?”

Daniel gazes down at me with his arms tucked behind his back. The blazing fire behind him is both hypnotic and frightening. “I’ve sold you as a breeder to another pack in the South.”

My mouth drops open. “W-What?”

Sold me?

My mind reels.

“The alpha coming to get you is aware of your…current state. He’s told me he’ll find a way to deal with that before making you his official breeder.” Daniel’s face morphs into a twisted smile. “He’s excited to get started creating an heir as soon as possible.”

Fear shoots through my veins, cold and bitter. My words are stuck on my tongue as I try to force myself to say something-

anything.

They’re going to make me get rid of my baby? Why can’t Daniel just kill me? That’s far less cruel than forcing me to kill my own child just to be forced to have someone else’s.

“W-Who?” I ask.

“His name is Nyx Calloway. I’m sure you’ve heard of him. He’s quite prolific.”

My eyes widen.

“No…” I mumble.

“He’ll be here tomorrow at dawn,” Daniel says. “We’ll have you cleaned up and ready for him. I’ll renounce you and then you’ll officially be his problem.”

The Southern King.

He’s sold me to the most ruthless alpha on this side of the country.

Theodore

“Your Highness? It’s time for supper.” Anais’s voice is quiet as she speaks.

I continue to stare out the window, watching as the heavy rain falls over my pack’s town. Warm lights from their houses break through the fog that’s begun to collect around the ground, making the roads appear ghostly.

In the mirror, I can see Anais shift uncomfortably in the doorway. She’s not used to being ignored, but she has no room to tell me again. She knows she’s been heard but can’t leave until I’ve acknowledged her.

A double-edged sword in agreeing to be my Luna.

“I’m not hungry,” I tell her finally.

She doesn’t say anything for a long moment, still hovering in the study’s doorway, most likely contemplating dropping it and leaving me alone or figuring out a way to coax me downstairs.
