(Scarlett)

I sat beside my daughter’s crib, running my finger over her hair as she slept.

The fact that Alexander was treating me the way that he was hurt me more than I could explain. The man was being harsh with me over something that I didn’t understand, and to think that marrying him was going to be beautiful.

I thought that at least, as a bride, that I was going to have those happy moments that I would be remembering. But it seemed to me that they were not going to exist. The man saw me as nothing but a slave, an omega for him to mess around with when he wanted to.

Someone who he could abuse only to be gentle with before taking his anger out on again. And that wasn’t something that I wanted for myself. If anything, I was more than a little scared of how things were going to be now that they reached to this point.

The nursery’s room was knocked, snapping me out of my daze before the smell of food filled my nostrils. I turned around to find Vladimir standing in front of me, holding the tray for me.

His smile was gentle and he nodded at the plate. “I figured that you could use something to eat. To say the least, at least something to help you regain your strength after everything that you have gone through. If not for you, then for your baby.”

His words made my heart swell.

Mostly because they were words that I wished that Alexander told me.

The man has been nothing but kind to me since we entered his Estate, and yet, my husband was choosing to be angry about it instead of being thankful, and that was something that hurt me, mostly because he had no reason to be angry. The man was simply taking his frustration out on me, and that wasn’t something that I was going to accept.

“Thank you, Vladimir, but I am really not hungry.” I said, declining his offer. The last thing that I needed was for Alexander to start a fuss over nothing. Plus, I was merely checking on my daughter before I went to sleep. I was used to sleeping on an empty stomach anyway. There was no use or point of me faking that I wasn’t.

Whether it was me being pregnant with Anastasia or me running with Alexander. Hell, even staying at the pack. After Delilah f*orced Alexander away from me, the most amount of food that I got was the lunch that I ate with Alpha Mathew and Luna Katlyn, if I could still call them Alpha and Luna now, when they asked me to come. Otherwise, I would mostly sleep on an empty stomach as I knew to save my money for something that was more important than food.

I was thankful for the minimum allowance that I got from Alpha Mathew at the time and I was always sure not to ask him for anything more. Even when it came to books that I needed for school, or projects, I would just save up enough to get them on time all year round and even during the summer. Therefore, I was often stuck to having breakfast or dinner with the leftover scrapes that I tended to clean up after the pack.

I didn’t complain at the time, but now, I couldn’t help but feel like a fool for allowing them to treat me the way that they did. Mostly because I knew that I didn’t deserve it. It hurt me that I was f*orced to deal with this, and that was something that I couldn’t find myself accepting anymore.

“That wasn’t the case earlier, Scarlett.” He said, his voice softening more than it already was. “I don’t know what happened between you and Alexander, but I know for fact…”

“Nothing happened, Vladimir, that is not something that you need to worry about. It is just that I am not hungry anymore. I was simply checking on my daughter before going to my room to rest.” I said, and he frowned. “I have had a very long few weeks. The wedding didn’t go as planned nor did our ‘honeymoon’. Therefore, I just need to rest a little. Please don’t take my comment into offense, but I truly am exhausted.”

He sighed but nodded, probably choosing not to interfere. Even if he wanted to, I knew that he was going to stop himself from doing so right now. Mostly because he knew that if things reached to this point, then it was because something happened. He wasn’t stupid, and I knew that he could tell, if he didn’t already hear, that something happened between Alexander and I. I was just thankful for the fact that he was trying to be understanding enough to not ask questions about it.

“I won’t pressure you into doing something that you don’t want to. But as the pack’s Alpha, and considering that you are my guest, I have to tell you that this would end up harming you. You are taking care of a baby, and that needs energy. Your wolf is strong, I can feel her Alpha demeanor, and know that you are an Alpha blood. But…”

“What?” I asked, frowning in confusion.

“You can’t think that I didn’t feel you coming to my territory when you did, right?” He asked, taking me by surprise. “I knew that you were an Alpha’s blood the second you set foot at that airport. But in all honesty, I wasn’t sure who it was until I saw you. I knew that Alexander arrived, however, I also knew that another Alpha arrived, and it wasn’t him. It wasn’t until I saw you that I realized that it was you who I felt.”

I stayed quiet as I listened to what he was saying, and I couldn’t help but feel like my heart was burning as I tried thinking of the number of possibilities that were probably happening behind my back, and the fact that I wasn’t trained to feel anything like they did.

“I will leave you to rest for now, but my offer still stands. You need to get something to eat; therefore, please, don’t let the night pass without getting some food in your system. If not for you, at least do it for your daughter.” He said softly. “I know at least that she would be the one that you would be fighting for, therefore, prove it to her that you are truly doing so.”

I smiled and nodded, watching as he took a step back before I turned to face my little princess. I put my hand on her cheek, gently running my finger through it before leaning in to k*iss her.

“Believe me, baby girl, you truly are the one person that I am fighting for in this world. At this point, no one else matters to me, and I know for fact that no one else would. I just need to grow stronger for you, and I give you my word that I will protect you from the whole world.”

My voice was above a whisper as I spoke to her, and I couldn’t help but feel my c*hest ache. “I won’t be the weak woman that you don’t want around. I give you my word, princess…”
