“Lily, I know you resent me, that you can’t forgive me easily. But even if you despise me, even if you hate me, I won’t let go. We had twelve years together… We’ll have many more twelve years in the future. Things will get better and better between us…”

He held her so tightly that Lily, frantic and furious, raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face.

“Mergan, I’m not a masochist who develops feelings for her captor. James will find me! And when he does, he will never let you get away with this!”

“Lily, James won’t be looking for you anymore.”

A shadow flickered in Mergan’s eyes. He held her even tighter, his grip paranoid and frenzied, as if trying to merge her into his very being.

“He found half a female corpse in the deep sea, devoured by sharks. The body was bloated beyond recognition. Everyone believes it’s your body. James saw it with his own eyes. He’s convinced you were eaten by sharks. Why would he keep looking for you? Lily, you are mine. You can only be mine!”

Lily’s face went deathly pale.

She couldn’t bear to imagine such a coincidence-that James would see such a thing while searching for her.

He cares for her so much. If he’s convinced she was devoured by sharks, how will he be able to go on living?

She was terrified he might do something drastic.

She wished she could sprout wings and fly to him.

But she was trapped by this paranoid fanatic. She couldn’t even leave the house she was imprisoned in, much less get to him.

“Lily, stop thinking about James.”

Mergan’s voice was laced with a dark insecurity. “I’ve loved you for so, so long. Don’t leave me. Never leave me…”

He had wanted her for so, so long.

Now, she was in his arms, her alluring red lips right before him. He simply couldn’t restrain the near-maniacal desire he felt for her.

His breathing quickened. He suddenly lowered his face, intending to ravage those bewitching lips.

“Don’t touch me!”

Lily definitely did not want him to kiss her. She mustered all her strength and slapped him hard again.

“Mergan, I’ll say it again: you disgust me. I hate you, and I could never, ever like you!”

“Lily, you’re not behaving…”

Mergan’s gloomy face was filled with a frightening chill.

He stared at Lily coldly. He slowly raised his hand to touch the side of his face she had struck, his aura as dangerous as a viper eying its prey.

Suddenly, he used his strength, fiercely shoving Lily down onto the nearby bed.

Lily’s heart pounded with terror. She wanted to kill him, even if it meant dying herself.

Spotting the glass on the bedside table, she was about to grab it and smash it over his head when his phone rang sharply.

Hearing the ringtone, a flash of impatience crossed his dark expression.

However, upon seeing the caller ID, he released her and quickly answered.

Lily still wanted to brain him.

But he was now at a distance, and he kept his eyes on her while he talked. His reflexes were too good. If she attacked while he was on guard, she wouldn’t stand a chance. She forced herself to suppress the urge to fight him to the death.

If she were alone, she wouldn’t care if she lived or died.

But she was carrying their babies.

James was waiting for her. She had to protect herself. She couldn’t bear to leave James alone.

“Fine, I’m heading over now.”

Lily had no idea what the person on the other end had said.

After Mergan hung up, he grabbed his jacket and strode out.

As he passed her, he paused briefly. “Lily, be good. I’ll be back soon.”

Lily wished he would drop dead outside and never return.

But, reasoning that his absence was her chance to escape this godforsaken place, she didn’t argue.

Hearing the heavy thud of the door closing, Lily leaped from the bed.

Waiting a moment until he was likely at the main gate, she quickly opened the door, ready to flee.

The moment the door opened, several bodyguards instantly blocked her path. “Miss, Mr. Mergan instructed you to stay in your room.”

“I’m leaving!” ter 632

Lily shoved at the bodyguard blocking her. “He has no right to lock me up! By stopping me, you’re aiding his crimes! It’s illegal! Let me go!”

“Our apologies, Miss. We cannot disobey Mr. Mergan’s orders.”

Their attitude was strictly professional. They showed no sign of letting her pass.

Lily was trembling with fury.

She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down, and tried to turn them.

“How much does Mergan pay you?”

Lily paused. “You must know the Luke family is far wealthier than the Ginger family. My personal assets alone are worth a hundred times more than Mergan’s. Let me leave today, and I’ll give each of you ten million!”

“Miss, please return to your room.”

The bodyguards were like unthinking machines. No matter how Lily threatened or bribed them, they refused to let her go.

Lily decided to make a break for it.

Two female bodyguards stepped forward, grabbed her, and forcibly carried her back into the room. They were completely impassive.

The door was slammed shut once more.

Lily knew that even if she rushed out again to negotiate, they would never side with her.

She stopped wasting time and energy and decided to try the window.

She ran to it, only to realize she was on the fourth floor.

And the ground below the window was covered in sharp, broken glass.

Even if she tied bedsheets together and managed to get down, the slightest slip would mean being impaled on the field of glass below.

Mergan had done this deliberately.

That madman had locked her on the fourth floor and covered the ground in glass specifically to eliminate any chance of a window escape.
