Nancy would have taken nearly two weeks of supplements before her organs gave out and she died in agony. Susan couldn’t wait that long, so she instructed Soren to make sure Nancy took the stronger poison as well.

“Nancy, Lily, those two bitches, and that old hag, they’ve all-“

Before Susan could finish, Soren gently cut her off. “Everything is exactly as you wished.”

“What about Blanc?”

Pausing briefly, Susan pressed further. “And James… how are the two of them?”

“They…”

Soren’s voice turned mocking, laced with glee. “They’re both in terrible shape emotionally. They’ve locked themselves in their rooms and won’t answer anyone. But the cellar is missing several crates of wine.”

Susan nearly burst out laughing in delight.

Clearly, after Nancy and Lily’s supposed deaths, the two men couldn’t handle the reality and had turned to alcohol to numb themselves.

This was their weakest, most vulnerable moment. The perfect time for her and her daughter to swoop in.

Several crates of wine gone…

They must have been drinking heavily, so much they no longer knew night from day.

Even if she and Renee couldn’t actually sleep with them tonight, she could still make them believe it had happened.

Without Nancy and Lily to stir things up, the men would no longer reject her and Renee.

All they’d need to do was offer soft words of comfort, and the two of them would surely become devoted.

A 83

“Soren, I took care of James for three years. I’m really worried about him. Renee is worried too. Can we go see him?”

“Of course.”

Soren’s voice carried a trace of reverence and admiration. “I’m at the Luke family estate, waiting to welcome you.”

“Renee, hurry and change. We’re going to the Luke estate!”

After hanging up, Susan rushed to Renee’s room.

Hearing this, Renee’s heart leapt with joy. “Mom, did Mr. Soren succeed? Did those bitches really die?”

“Yes.”

For her sake, Soren hadn’t hesitated to stain his hands with blood. It filled Susan with confidence and pride.

She lifted her chin high, her voice dripping with arrogance. “Soren said Blanc and James are drowning themselves in drink. If we go now, something is bound to happen with them.”

“Renee, tonight you’re wearing the red dress.”

Renee’s fair skin looked especially radiant in bright red, dazzling and alluring.

And red meant celebration.

Tonight was their night of triumph. They had to look the part.

Renee went to the dressing room to change, while Susan hurried back to her own room to put on a deep wine-colored couture gown.

The dress was ingeniously cut-an open back at the waist, seductive and sexy. With her own charms added in, she was certain Blanc would fall to his knees before her pomegranate skirt, lose his mind for her, and bow his head in devotion.

I’ll make him crave more; I want him to die for me.

With Soren opening the gate, Susan and Renee slipped easily into the main hall of the Luke family estate.

Seeing Soren, they hurried forward, pressing him with eager questions. “Soren, is Blanc in his room?”

“Mr. Soren, what about James?”

Soren’s eyes flickered with a trace of disgust at their impatient faces. He rapidly lowered his gaze, hiding everything, and said with feigned respect, “They’re both still in their rooms.”

Almost at once, footsteps sounded from the corridor. Susan turned instinctively toward the sound.

When she saw Blanc, her eyes brimmed with moist joy. “Blanc, drinking will hurt you. Please don’t keep drinking.”

“I know losing Nancy was a huge blow-you can’t accept it yet.”

“But you’re not alone. I’ll always be here for you.”

She looked at him coquettishly, then threw herself at him, all shyness and flirtation.

Soren already had a wife and child, yet he would risk everything for her. She felt supremely confident in her allure.

She was certain Blanc would succumb to her gentle seduction and be unable to pull away.

“Susan, are you sick?” Blanc snapped.

Susan had expected that her flirtatious collapse into his arms would make him hold her tight and seek comfort in her. She hadn’t imagined he would dodge her, leaving her grasping at thin air.

Caught off balance, she stumbled against a nearby chair and fell to the floor in humiliation.

Blanc’s voice remained cold and disdainful. “I was never alone to begin with.”

“I have parents, a wife, and children. How could I be alone?”

“If you dare curse Nancy again, I’ll see you dead first.”

Susan froze, stunned.

Was he refusing to admit Nancy was gone? The thought that Nancy was dead and he still couldn’t let go filled Susan with fury. How could a corpse-turned to dust-compete with a living beauty like her?

She was sure he would see her worth soon and love her until he ached.

She didn’t get up. Through tears she glared at him. “Blanc, you’re so rude-you hurt me…”

“It hurts… it really hurts…”

Blanc’s eye twitched hard. Hearing Susan’s cloying, affected voice made him feel worse than swallowing a fly. If not for his mother insisting he play along so Susan could be taught the pain of falling from heaven to hell, he would have had Susan thrown into a cesspit long ago.

He thought Susan vicious-every time he saw her she made his skin crawl. He hadn’t even touched her hem, yet she acted as if he’d assaulted her. It was a slander of his innocence.

He kept his face cold and was about to tell her to stop, when Renee spoke, earnest and heartfelt.

“I know you can’t accept godmother’s death all at once, but my mom didn’t mean anything by it. She worries about you-she thinks of you in everything she does. She really cares. Can’t you at least return her kindness?”

“Shut up!”

At the mention of Nancy’s death, Blanc’s expression froze even colder, as if ice had poured over him. “Don’t spew filth here. Nancy will never leave me!”

Renee looked at him with sympathetic understanding. He was still refusing reality.

She moved her lips to try again, but then saw James coming down the stairs.

“James!”

Renee’s joy at seeing him was nearly airborne, but remembering his recent losses, she quickly pressed her lips together, tears brimming as she spoke. “I’ve heard about grandmother and godmother-about what happened. I know you must be hurting, but the dead can’t come back. James, I hope you can move forward-“

“Did you just crawl out of a cesspit? Why does your mouth smell so foul?” James shot her a look of extreme disgust. “Curse my family again and I don’t mind having you thrown into a cesspit!”
