Nancy, fond of her, would always buy two of everything-every outfit she purchased, she gave one to Susan.

Susan had no other clothes, so she was forced to wear what Nancy gave her.

But one day she overheard others whispering that she deliberately flattered Nancy just to benefit from her generosity. They laughed at her poverty.

From that moment on, Susan hated Nancy bitterly.

As they grew older, Nancy would occasionally give her jewelry, luxury bags, and other fine things.

Susan needed them, so she accepted.

But every time Nancy offered her something, it felt like condescension, a humiliating act of charity.

Now, with Nancy close to death, Susan relished the thought that she would never be overshadowed again.

Once she married Blanc and bore him a son, she would become the enviable mistress of the Luke family. Her former classmates would grovel before her, flatter her, and never again dare to say she was beneath Nancy.

Susan gripped Renee’s hand tightly, her voice filled with near-maniacal conviction. “Renee, our good days are ahead of us. You and I-we will not lose!”

With that, she quickly pulled out her phone and dialed James.

James had been eager to return home and hadn’t lingered long at the club.

Jetson, who hadn’t brought his own car, insisted on hitching a ride with him.

Just as they reached the parking lot, James’s phone lit up with Susan’s call.

A flicker of coldness passed through his eyes when he saw her name. But he still answered.

“Madam Susan, what do you want?”

“James, I’ve been feeling awful lately. Tonight I even came down with a fever.”

Susan sighed heavily, layering her tone with helplessness. “This body of mine is useless. I don’t know how much longer I can last. Feverish and muddled, I kept recalling those three years I cared for you. James, could you come and keep me company? Just talk with me a while?”

At the mention of those so-called three years of care, James’s eyes grew even colder.

Still, he wanted to confirm something. His voice was flat. “Fine. I’ll come over now.”

“James, how exactly did Renee harm Lily? Can’t you two reconcile?” Jetson asked cautiously.

James didn’t answer. He only said, in that same icy tone, “You can ride with me. But first, we’re stopping at Susan’s.”

Jetson immediately understood-Susan, Renee’s mother.

He had thought James and Renee were finished, but now James was going to see Susan? Maybe there was hope for reconciliation after all.

As an old friend, Jetson wished James wouldn’t break things so harshly. But if he did forgive Renee, Jetson also felt it was unfair to Lily. He was torn.

Running his hand through his short hair in frustration, he decided to wait and see how things unfolded.

Before long, James’s car pulled into Susan’s villa.

Jetson, thinking it impolite to arrive empty-handed, had bought some supplements on the way.

James retrieved them from the trunk and shoved them all into Jetson’s arms. “I need the bathroom. You go upstairs first.”

“Madam Susan’s room is the first one on the east side.”

“Oh.”

Jetson had wanted to go up with him. He hadn’t seen Susan in years and didn’t know what to say. But when James shot him that frigid look, he forgot he could have waited in the living room. Like a fool, he trudged upstairs alone.

James, of course, had no intention of using the bathroom.

He bore grudges.

Jetson had foolishly dragged Renee to the club that night to irritate him-so now James would return the favor.

He was sure Susan hadn’t called him out of affection. This was about helping Renee scheme against him.

And if he was right, the one waiting in Susan’s room wasn’t Susan at all-it was Renee.

Jetson was so eager to defend her, to persuade him to drop the charges? Then James would let him see for himself just how shameless Renee was.

People don’t understand pain until the knife cuts into their own flesh. Only when Jetson experienced it firsthand would he stop meddling.

Of course, once this was confirmed, Susan would lose the last shred of respect he had for her.

“Madam Susan…”

Jetson soon reached Susan’s room.

The door was ajar.

He knocked politely before pushing it open.

Inside, there was no Susan-only Renee, draped in a nearly transparent white veil.

The next second, drenched in cloying perfume, Renee hurled herself into his arms.

“James, I missed you so much. Please don’t be angry with me anymore, alright? I really like you. more than anyone. I’m willing to give you everything I have. Take me, won’t you?”

“Ahhh!”

Jetson let out a blood-curdling scream. Startled by the nearly naked Renee clinging to him, he dropped the gift boxes he’d been holding, smashing them onto both their feet.

Heaven and earth-why punish a pure, innocent bachelor like him with such a searing sight?

A naked woman had just thrown herself at him.

He wasn’t clean anymore!

Because James had promised over the phone that he would come, Renee hadn’t considered the possibility of anyone else walking through the door. At the knock, she hadn’t bothered to look -she’d simply struck her most seductive pose and leapt into his arms.

Only when she heard Jetson’s scream did she realize she had embraced the wrong man.

“Help!”

Jetson felt as if worms had crawled all over him. He flung Renee away violently and slapped at his body like he could scrub her touch off.

He bolted for the stairs, shrieking, “James, save me! Renee tried to molest me-she threw herself at me! I’ve been sullied! I’m calling the police! Help!”

Hearing him, Renee’s face turned dark with fury.

She wanted James, not Jetson. She had no desire to take advantage of him. If anyone should be screaming, it was her-for being seen like this.

She cursed Jetson bitterly. If he hadn’t barged in self-righteously, she’d already have James beneath her spell.

Still, she quickly pulled out her phone and posted a “friends-only” update visible only to Lily.

She included two pictures.

One showed James’s car pulling into her villa. The other showed herself in gauzy white, sprawled across the bed in a sultry pose.

The caption read: “He still came.”

Pregnant women were the easiest to unsettle.

Renee knew Lily trusted James-at least a little. But after she herself had tried to drug Lily, and James still came driving to her villa…

Lily would surely wonder: if James felt nothing for Rence, why would he show up at all?

If Lily fought with him over it, worked herself into a frenzy, maybe even miscarried-well, that would serve her right.

And if she didn’t miscarry, constant fighting would still sour James, make him feel unlucky and resentful.

Then Renee could swoop in like the gentle flower, soothe him, console him. She refused to believe a man of steel couldn’t be bent into soft wire in her hands.

“James, save me! I’m really not clean anymore!”

Jetson tore into the living room, still screaming. The shock of Renee’s sudden embrace had branded a scar on his psyche.
