Finally.
I turned fully onto my side, head propped on my arm, and stared at him. At the blue of his eyes, softer than any sky I’d ever seen. His lashes were thick and shadowed his cheeks, and his perfectly clear skin, like he was made of marble. His hair had grown back, longer now, almost brushing his ears again.
I reached out and pushed a strand off his forehead.
He looked perfect. Whole.
And alive.
But my breath caught. That image flashed-him lying lifeless in my arms, blood soaking his shirt. That hollow sound in my head when I’d screamed his name. My chest tightened like I couldn’t breathe.
I shut my eyes, trying to push it away, but his fingers touched my cheek and I felt him shift closer.
“Lia,” he whispered.
I opened my eyes. His face was inches from mine. His thumb brushed my jaw before he leaned in and kissed me. Soft and warm and steady. Like home.
Like everything was right again.
When he pulled back, I smiled, breathless. “This bond… it’s incredible, Zane. I feel like… I don’t know. Like I’ve been given something too good. Too special. I don’t know how I deserved something so special. How I deserved you.”
He stared at me, his eyes unreadable for a second. Then he smiled. “I used to dream of this. Ever since I realised you were my mate. I would think about lying beside you like this, knowing you were mine. Knowing you chose me.”
My heart fluttered gently.
“You have no idea how perfect this is to me,” he said, voice rough. “You say you’re the lucky one, but Lia… it’s me. It’s always been me.”
I tried to speak but the words wouldn’t come.
He pulled our joined hands to his chest. “You saved me more times than you know. When I lost people. When I thought I didn’t matter anymore. Even when I was Alpha, it didn’t mean anything. Not without you. You gave me something real. You gave me a reason to breathe and be alive.”
“Zane…”
He leaned in again, forehead pressing against mine. “You’re everything I’ve ever needed.”
And I wanted to tell him that he was too, that I couldn’t even imagine breathing if he wasn’t around, but my phone started buzzing from across the floor.
We both froze.
“Who’s calling you this late?” he asked, reaching to pass it to me.
I frowned at the screen. “It’s Mom,” I said quietly.
“Which one?” He snorted.
I shot him a look. “My Mom,” I repeated.
He chuckled, sitting up a little. “Weird time for a chat. Tell her I said hi.”
I nodded and swiped to answer. “Mom? Is everything okay?”
Joy
There was a pause. Then came her voice, soft and hushed. “Lia.
“
Sweetheart. Everything’s fine, but… a woman came to the house. She’s saying… she’s saying she’s your birth mother.”
My blood ran cold.
“She told us not to tell you,” Mom whispered. “But I had to. I can’t let you miss the one chance you have at meeting her. If you can, come quick.”
I sat up, heart pounding in my chest.
“Mom, listen-“
The line went quiet.
-LIA’S POV-
“Mom?” I asked, my heart raging in my chest. “Hello? Mom!”
“Lia, let’s go,” Zane said, standing up and taking my hand to pull me to my feet.
“My house,” I said.
Zane nodded. “I know. I heard. Don’t worry, everything will be fine.”
We dressed and rushed out of the school, my legs trembling as we hurried to his car.
Zane sped all the way to my place, running traffic lights and swerving around cars.
I kept staring at my phone, watching the time, calculating how long it was taking me to get there. To protect my parents from the one who gave birth to me.
Zane had barely even parked the car outside my house when I climbed out, running to the door. I rang the bell four times in a row, taking deep breaths to stay calm. My eyes heated up and cooled repeatedly, and I squeezed them shut so they wouldn’t start glowing in Mom or Dad’s face.

Zane was beside me immediately, his hand resting on the small of my back, sending a wave of calmness through me.
The door opened a moment later, and I heaved a sigh of relief when Mom stepped forward, unhurt and absolutely fine.
“Mom,” I breathed, throwing my arms around her and pulling her into a hug.
She hugged me back, tapping my back, confused.
“Honey?” Dad asked as he came to the door. “What are you doing here so late at night?”
I pulled away from Mom and entered the house, followed by Zane. “Where is she?” I asked, looking around.
Dad frowned. “Who?”
“Dad, my mother. My birth mother.”
Dad clicked his tongue and glanced at Mom, who lowered her gaze.
“You told her?”
“Of course I did,” Mom muttered. “It is her right to get to know her mother.”
“You’re my mother,” I said, taking her hands in mine. “Okay,
Mom? It’s you. You’re my mother. No one else. Whoever that woman is, she gave me away. You’re the one who raised me.”
Mom blinked at me, her shoulders slumping a little. “I know, but maybe she didn’t have another choice. You can’t hate her just because she gave you away. After all, she gave you to me. To a woman who would love and care for you.”
“There is never a reason to give up your baby and then never even visit them for seventeen years,” I replied. “Next time, if she comes by, do not let her in.”
Mom frowned. “Why?”
“Because I’m telling you not to,” I stated. “I met her, Mom. And she’s nothing like I imagined.”
“When did she even leave?” Dad asked. “She was here ten minutes ago. I left to the go to the bathroom and I come back and she’s gone.”
“I told you,” Mom replied, turning to him. “She found out I told Lia so she left.”
“Did she say why she didn’t want you telling Lia?” Zane asked.
Mom stared at him for a moment, then shook her head. “She didn’t say anything. Maybe she didn’t want Lia to get mad. She did come here really late at night.” She looked at me again, her gaze lowering to my clothes. “What are you wearing?”
“Zane’s clothes,” I muttered, my cheeks heating up.
An amused smile stretched across her lips.
Dad’s face fell though. “Why?” he asked, stepping closer to me. “Do you not have your own?”
I laughed, shaking my head. “Relax, Dad. It’s not what you think.”
It was.
It was exactly what he thought.
But I couldn’t tell him that if I didn’t want him attacking Zane.
Dad narrowed his eyes, glancing at him.
