I gulped.
“Not her Mom, Christy. I mean, her birth mother.”
Christy stared at him, then scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Nice try, Zane.” She rolled her eyes.
“It’s true,” I whispered. “At least that’s what the woman outside is saying.”
Now they all froze, eyes so wide I was afraid they’d fall off their faces.
“Yeah,” I muttered. “Same.”
“The Moon Goddess, is here, under our roof right now?” Aaron said incredulously. “The moon is literally shining in the sky right now. How is this possible?”
“I asked the same thing,” I muttered.
“Where’s Warner?” Ajax asked. “Is he with her?”
Zane nodded.
Ajax left to go find him at once.
“What… what are you gonna do?” Aaron asked, watching me. “Do you even want to see her?”
I nodded. “I do. She gave birth to me.”
“But she left you,” Sheila whispered. “You’re not mad? Humans take that very personally I’ve noticed.”
“She didn’t have a choice,” I said quietly. “She did what was best for me. For my safety and my future. So I could have a normal childhood.”
“Well then,” Sheila smiled, gently taking my arm and giving it a squeeze, “if you’re at peace with it, then go meet her. You wouldn’t want to keep the Moon Goddess waiting, would you?”
A small smile crawled onto my lips too, and I glanced at Zane. “Will you go with me?”
Zane took a deep breath, then nodded. “Of course. Whatever you need, my love.”
“It’s okay if you don’t want to,” I said quickly. “I know it might feel weird for you guys.”
“It’s fine,” he replied. “Warner met her already. And your other mom really likes me, so let’s hope this one will too. After all, she made me just for you.”
I bit my lip, unsure if I should smile at that.
Zane chuckled at my reaction, taking my hand and lacing our fingers. “Let’s go, Lia. I’m ready to meet her. Come on.”
I took a deep breath, and then we walked out of the main hall, where the party was.
Pale
My hold on Zane’s hand tightened as he led me to the lounge, probably where they seated their special guests.
With every step we took towards the door, my heart beat quicker, the world around me starting to feel too small.
We stopped right outside the door, and Zane waited for me to catch my breath, before pushing it open.
With trembling feet, I stepped inside, my gaze immediately meeting hers as she turned towards me.
She… was nothing like I imagined.
No glowing hair. No purple blazing eyes. No light radiating from her skin.
She looked normal.
Human.
Like everyone else.
Like me.
She smiled at me, her gaze softening.
“Lia,” she whispered, taking a single step closer.
I blinked, licking my lips. “Selene?” I said softly.
She chuckled, the sound so velvety, I could listen to it forever.
“Actually, I go by Sarah now.”
-LIA’S POV-
“Sarah?” I said softly. “Why?”
She shrugged, like she was just another woman. A human woman. “I liked the sound of it. And some people would figure out who I am because of my name. So I decided to make it easier for myself to hide..
Something about what she said didn’t sit entirely well with me.
What did she mean by she changed her name? That people recognised her? That she needed to hide?
It was almost as if she spent a lot of time on Earth, not just short, occasional visits.
“What is it, baby?” she asked, walking up to me.
I took a sudden step back, completely out of instinct.
She paused, a frown taking over her gentle features.
“Sorry,” I muttered. “It’s just… this is a little scary for me.”
She blinked twice, then smiled at me. “I can understand. I am but a stranger to you, isn’t it?”
I nodded, swallowing.
“Would you like me to take your mom’s form? Would that help you feel more comfortable with me?”
“God, no,” I said instantly, frowning. “Please don’t do that.”
“Okay,” she smiled, “I won’t.”
I turned to glance at Zane, who still stood at the door, staring at her in disbelief. He looked too stunned to speak.
“Why don’t you sit down?” I asked, gesturing towards the sofa. “We should sit and talk, Sel-Sarah.”
“Whatever you want, Lia.” She immediately took a seat, and tapped the spot beside her, watching me expectantly.
I hesitated, but then made my way over to her, sitting beside her.
She turned to me fully, staring at me with admiration in her eyes. “You’re beautiful, Lia. Much more beautiful than I expected.”
I smiled. “Thank you.”
“I am so glad to see you here, adjusting so readily with everyone. How did human life treat you, Lia? Were your parents good to you?”
“They are the best,” I replied. “They love me more than even you could.”
Her smile widened, and she took my hands in hers. Her touch was warm. I’d expected something cool.
“I am so happy to hear that. Every waking moment since I left you at their doorstep, I was afraid if I had done the right thing. If they were treating you with love and kindness or not. If they’d allow you to become what you were supposed to. Whether or not living under their wing, you’d ever be able to flourish the way you should. But I am so glad to hear they are good to you.”
I blinked a couple of times, trying to register her words.
“You were the most beautiful thing I ever created, Lia.” She cupped my cheek. “I made you with my own light. Blessed you with the compassion of humans, and the strength of werewolves. And of course, bits of my own power too. I wanted to see how this would turn out. If I could create a new species, something better than humans and werewolves both. But then after leaving you, the worry I constantly felt made me give up on my dream. I was always afraid for your life and safety. I kept wondering if you’re still alive, or if someone found you and discovered what you were. Thank goodness I heard you last night. I realised that you were ready to meet me, now that you knew what you are. You commanded the entire town. What exactly happened that you had to do that?”
A dull ache broke out in my chest.
What… was she saying?
A new species?
Like I was an experiment?
Did she not give birth to me?
And what did she mean when she said she didn’t know if I was alive or not? me
Why was she asking questions? Wasn’t she the one with all the answers?
“What… do you mean, Sarah?” I asked, trying to choose my words carefully. “Do you noting that has been going on with me? Haven’t you been watching?”
