We ended up sitting in the living room, just breathing for a bit. The last few months had been… a lot. Attacks, lies, secrets, people dying, me becoming a full-blown Luna with magic and authority-learning my new powers, and then understanding how dangerous they can be.
Ajax leaned back with a groan, tossing a cushion in the air and catching it.
“I swear, we need a break before something explodes,” he muttered.
Aaron chuckled. “The end of the school year is around the corner. Why don’t we actually celebrate something for once?”
Zane looked at me, then back at the others. “Lia’s been officially announced as our Luna now. That deserves a party.”
I blinked. “Wait-no. That’s not necessary.”
“Shut up,” Sheila said immediately, throwing the cushion at me.
“You’re not skipping out on your first pack party.”
“Yeah,” Warner grinned. “You saved all our asses. Let us throw you something. Please?”
I sighed, trying not to smile as everyone started chiming in with ideas and arguing over decorations.
“Fine,” I said. “But nothing dramatic.”
They all ignored that part.
The party started right after sundown.
I stood in front of the mirror in our room, fixing the last bit of my eyeliner. My hair was pulled back just enough to show my mark, and the purple and silver dress shimmered softly under the golden lights of our bedroom. It felt strange to wear something that made such a loud statement. But maybe it was time to stop hiding. Especially after the entire town had heard my voice the previous night-even if they didn’t remember.
Zane stepped behind me, sliding his arms around my waist as he pressed a kiss to my shoulder.
“You look like a queen,” he murmured, eyes meeting mine in the mirror. He was in a tailored silver tux, sharp and stupidly attractive.
“And you,” I turned slightly, poking his chest, “look like someone who knows exactly how good he looks.”
“I do.” He grinned.
I chuckled, leaning up and pressing a kiss to his lips.
Having a boyfriend was cool.
Hand in hand, we made our way down the stairs of the pack house. As soon as the pack saw us, a loud cheer broke out. acro
Everyone was gathered to welcome us. Lights twinkled the wide open space, soft music playing in the background, and the smell of freshly grilled food drifted through the air. But none of that mattered when I saw the way their faces lit up seeing us.
The Hounds hooted the loudest. Ajax even whistled, pretending to faint. Sheila elbowed him.
“She looks gorgeous.”
“Careful guys, don’t tell her that, she’ll start playing goddess again,” Aaron added with a smirk.
“Too soon, Aaron, too soon,” Sheila scolded.
I laughed, my heart full.
It felt good to be able to joke about it. To make light of something I feared I’d have nightmares about.
The party was beautiful.
Music played, people danced, and laughter filled every inch of the pack house. I’d never seen the Hounds this relaxed. Even Christy had shown up, sticking close to Sheila but smiling more than I’d seen in days.
Zane pulled me close after a while, nodding towards the dance floor.
“We never finished our prom dance,” he said softly.
I smiled. “We never even got halfway through it.”
“Let’s fix that.”
He took my hand and led me to the middle. A slow song started, and the rest of the world faded. His hands found my waist, mine rested on his chest. We moved gently, in sync, his forehead brushing against mine.
“Do you have any idea how proud I am of you?” he whispered.
“Do you have any idea how tired I am?” I whispered back.
He laughed. “We’re going to be okay. You know that, right?”
I nodded. “As long as we’re together, yeah.”
Zane dipped his head, kissing me slowly. The pack whooped in the background, but I didn’t care. Everything was perfect. For once, nothing felt like it was falling apart.
He pulled back, eyes darker yet twinkling. “Wanna take this upstairs?”
I blushed, biting my lip. “Yeah… I do.”
He was about to scoop me up into his arms when Warner ran towards us, his face full of alarm.
“Zane! Lia!” he yelled. “There’s someone at the door.”
Zane turned to him, annoyed. “Can it wait?” he almost growled.
“No,” Warner said, eyes wide. “She says she’s Lia’s birth mother.”
-LIA’S POV-
The ground shifted beneath my feet.
I stared at Warner, waiting for him to laugh.
If it were Ajax, he would have by now.
But Warner stared back at me, his gaze concerned.
I released a slow breath, glancing at Zane.
For the first time, he too looked like he had no idea what to do. Like the world had just collapsed around him.
“It’s… it’s not possible,” I said softly. “The moon’s in the sky, Warner. Whoever this is, it’s an imposter.”
“I-I don’t think so, Lia,” he said. “I mean, I reacted the same way. I actually tried to attack her. But I couldn’t.”
“What do you mean you couldn’t?” Zane asked.
“I mean I physically couldn’t. I stepped towards her with a growl, accusing her of lying, and then as soon as I got close enough, all the anger melted away and I felt like I was trying to attack my mom.”
I blinked, my heart thudding in my chest.
How was that possible?
How could it be her?
Zane placed an arm around me, probably sensing the storm of emotions I felt at once.
“You okay?” he whispered, bending a little so he could look me in the eye.
I stared at him dumbfounded.
“Love?” he whispered, his free hand taking my face. “You can refuse to see her. It’s okay.”
“No,” I said at once, my eyebrows drawing together. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. “I can’t refuse. What if she never comes back? What if I never get this chance again?”
“Okay,” Zane nodded, “Warner, go tell her Lia’s coming. She needs a moment to register this.”
For the first time ever, Warner hesitated. “You want me to tell the Moon Goddess to wait?”
“Yes,” Zane stated. “If she wants to meet the daughter she abandoned years ago, she has to wait.”
Warner pursed his lips, then nodded and left.
Christy, Sheila, Aaron and Ajax approached us, frowns on their faces.
“Guys, I’m getting some serious deja vu right now. Why did you stop dancing?” Christy grumbled.
“Is everything okay?” Sheila asked.
Zane glanced at me, and then at them. “Lia’s mom is here.”
“Oh,” Christy’s eyes widened. “Everyone here is totally showing their powers. What now? Do we need to distract her?”
