“But it would have, if it weren’t for you.” He closed his eyes, leaning into my touch like it grounded him. “I owe you my life.”

I smiled, brushing a thumb over his brow. “No, you don’t. I owe you mine. You’ve saved me so many times I’ve lost count. If I never met you… if you weren’t my mate…” I released a shaking breath. “I’d still be that lonely nerd hiding in the shadows, convinced no one would ever choose me. You gave me purpose. You gave me love. It’s only because of you that I even found out who I really am. What I really am.”

He opened his eyes and looked up at me, but I didn’t let him say anything. I leaned down and kissed his forehead. Then his cheek. Then his nose. Then the corner of his mouth. His laughter rumbled through me like the gentlest thunder.

“You’re everything, Zane Adams,” I murmured. “You’ve always been everything.”

Then I placed a final kiss on his lips, closing my eyes and relishing in the taste of it.

Class was loud. Mostly because none of us were actually paying attention.

Christy was doodling in her notebook. Aaron was twirling a pen like it was a dagger. Ajax was playing with his lighter. And Zane was doing that thing where he leaned back in his chair like he was at a caf? and not in school.

Then Mr. Baker walked in with a stack of papers and the room groaned in unison.

“Pop quiz!” he said, far too cheerfully.

Groans turned into audible complaints.

“Mr. Baker, come on!” Ajax said dramatically. “Pop quizzes are unconstitutional.”

Zane put on his signature charming smile. “You wouldn’t want to ruin the mood, sir.”

Mr. Baker didn’t even flinch. “Your mood isn’t part of the syllabus, Zane. We don’t care about anything but the syllabus.”

I scowled. I cared about Zane’s mood. More than anything else.

Papers were handed out, and my stomach sank. I glanced down at the questions and felt the blood drain from my face. What even was this? Had we ever been taught this? Was I even in the right class?

I looked around. Christy was frowning at her paper like it had offended her. Warner had just flipped his over and pushed it away. Zane was already trying to copy Ajax, who was clearly guessing every answer. Aaron and Sheila were staring at each other with amused smiles.

“This is ridiculous,” I muttered under my breath, standing up. “Mr. Baker, we’re not ready for this. No one knows anything. Please, you have to cancel this quiz. It’ll ruin everyone’s grades.”

Mr. Baker paused and looked up at me. He blinked once, then sighed. “Alright. Pack it up.”

The room stilled.

I frowned. “What?”

He walked to the front and started collecting the papers again. “I said, pack it up. No quiz.”

The silence that followed was deafening. Then it slowly turned into whispers. Disbelief. Confusion. Even suspicion.

“He’s never done that before,” someone muttered behind me.

“He’s the only teacher who’s never played favourites,” another added.

I sat back down slowly, heart pounding in my chest.

“At least it’s cancelled,” someone else heaved a sigh of relief.

Yes, good, focus on the good part, I thought to myself.

But when I looked around, all the Hounds were staring at me. Zane too. Christy had paused mid-doodle and was just blinking at me. I raised my hands with a shrug.

“Don’t look at me like that,” I whispered. “I didn’t command him or anything, I swear.”

Their expressions didn’t change.

“Guys,” I laughed nervously. “Seriously. Chill.”

Zane gave a nod, then a gentle smile.

But it didn’t reach his eyes.

And I could feel the doubt rolling off of him.

The rest of the Hounds too.

They returned to whatever they were doing, but I could sense the awkwardness, the silent objections and protests.

I hadn’t used my power deliberately. I wasn’t even sure if that’s what happened.

But there was no way to prove it.

-WARNER’S POV-

I sat with my feet dipped in the lake, shoes tossed behind me on the grass. The water was cold, but it helped clear my head.

Sapphire sat down beside me a second later. She didn’t say anything at first, just nudged me with her shoulder.

“What’s up?”

“We had a quiz at school today,” I began at once, secretly desperate to hear her opinion. “Everyone begged the instructor to cancel it. He refused. Lia asked him once, and it was done.”

Sapphire smiled. “Isn’t that good?”

I turned to her. “She compelled him, Sapphire.”

“You cannot know that for sure.”

“I can,” I argued. “It was clear.”

“You’re overthinking it.”

I shook my head. “I know what I saw. Mr. Baker is not the type to back down because someone asked nicely. Something changed.”

She picked up a pebble and tossed it into the water. “Alright, okay. Even if you’re right, what do you want me to do?”

“Keep an eye on her,” I said. “Suggest something, I don’t know.” I ran a hand through my hair.

“Only if she becomes a danger, Warner. And there was my other condition.”

My heartbeat picked up.

“I know,” I replied, staring down at my reflection in the water. “I remember.”

“And?” she asked, her tone expectant.

I took a deep breath. “I accept.”

She froze.

Silence fell. Then soft golden light started flickering around us.

Fireflies.

She’d called them for sure.

Sapphire looked at me, eyes narrowing. “You’re serious?”

I turned to face her fully. “I am. I was afraid to let you in before. I thought if I did, I’d lose control of everything else. I had never met a witch before, and I didn’t know how you guys worked. So everything I felt for you, I dismissed, telling myself it was nothing but a trick.”

Her brows furrowed.

“But in spite of everything, you’ve always been there. You saved been the my life. Even when I was an ass. Even when I constantly ignored you for years.” ?

Her gaze softened as she stared at me, and I heard her heart start to race. “You were never just an ass, Warner,” she said quietly. “You were a scared one.”

I smiled faintly. “Yeah. And you still stayed.”

Her eyes shimmered like the lake surface. “I guess I did.”

“I like you, Sapphire,” I said plainly. “More than I’ve liked anyone in a long time. You make me better. Or at least you make me want to be. And honestly… with you, I feel everything I’m supposed to feel with my destined mate. So even though you’re a witch, I guess you were right. You are my mate, Sapphire. The one destined for me. Created for me. The one who balances me.”

She blinked, and tears glistened in her eyes. One slid down her cheek, and I gently brushed it away with my thumb.

My hand lingered on her cheek. Her skin was smooth. Almost like silk.

She leaned into my hand, and then very slowly, like she was almost afraid, she smiled.

I found myself leaning in, gaze settling on her inviting lips.

Her hand slid carefully onto my chest.

Our lips were barely a breath apart, but a scream tore through the night.
