“I’m not scared of her hurting me,” Zane said, walking in and standing in front of us like he was reporting for duty. “I’m scared of losing her. Of her getting hurt. She brought me back to life, Aaron. She’s stronger than all of us combined. She’s not just my Luna. She’s the love of my life. I owe her every breath I take.”
His voice didn’t waver. Not once.
“I can’t afford to mess this up. Not with her.”
Sheila frowned. “But what about us? How can you keep us in the dark about things?”
“Because I know how you guys feel. And her moving in wasn’t up for debate. I didn’t want anyone treating her like a threat. Or like she was broken. I’ve noticed the way you all look at her now. She’s still Lia, guys. Just stronger. Sharper. And I had to move her to the pack house because she went into heat. I couldn’t risk leaving her alone with her parents.”
Oh.
That much made sense.
“How is she doing?” Sheila asked, her voice gentle now.
“She’s okay,” Zane gave a nod. “She managed to turn too.”
“That’s great,” Aaron said. “Congratulations.”
Zane smiled. “Thanks.”
“Have you completed the bond?” Sheila asked.
“No,” he replied. “Not yet. But I will, soon.”
I forced a smile.
Ajax crossed his arms. “That’s great and all. But we’re just supposed to act like nothing’s changed? You blindsided us.”.
Zane sighed. “I’m sorry. I know I disappointed you guys. But I have been distracted, nothing else. Just… trust me. I’ve got everything under control. You’re still my right hands. Nothing about that has changed. And Lia hasn’t changed either. She’s just learning who she is now.”
I didn’t say anything. But part of me wondered if maybe she had changed. Maybe not in a bad way, but enough to make Zane second-guess everything. Enough to make me notice how quick he was to follow her lead. She could control him if she wanted. She had the power to.
It made my stomach twist.
But I didn’t say it out loud.
“Okay,” Aaron said finally. “We trust you, Zane. Always have. You are our Alpha. Just keep us in the loop next time.”
“I will,” Zane promised. “I’m sorry again.
“It’s okay,” Sheila said.
Ajax glanced at me. I looked away.
That night, I found myself knocking on a wooden door, half wondering if I was making a mistake.
Sapphire opened it with a sly smile, her hair tied up and a robe hanging loosely from her shoulders. “Well, well. Look who it is. Destiny’s come knocking on my door tonight.”
I shoved my hands in my pockets. “You gonna let me in?”
She stepped aside. “Come in, Warner. To what do I owe the honour? Or should I say, how did I get so lucky?”
I followed her in, glancing at the herbs drying by the window and the faint scent of jasmine lingering in the air. “I need your help.”
She raised a brow. “That serious?”
“Zane might be in trouble. And the rest of us, too. I don’t know for sure yet, but Lia’s not… normal. I need your opinion on what to do.”
Sapphire didn’t laugh like I thought she would. Instead, she nodded slowly. “What’s up?”
“Zane,” I sighed. “He moved her into the pack house without telling us. Announced her as his Luna. And sometimes, he does as she says without blinking. I’m afraid she might be controlling him. Maybe she doesn’t realise it either.”
Sapphire stared at me, her eyes narrowing a little. “Are you afraid?”
I clenched my jaw. “No. I’m not afraid. I’m just… concerned.”
The corner of her mouth curled up like she didn’t believe me. But she let it go. “Okay. If she ever gets out of control, bring her here. I’ll get into her head. See what she wants. Maybe convince her to change her mind.”
Relief flooded through me. “You’d do that?”
“Not for free, wolf-boy.”
I gave her a look. “Alright. What do you want?”
She turned to face me fully, voice quieter now. “I want you to stop believing that I’m tricking you. About being your mate. About everything you feel for me. I want you to admit it.”
My chest tightened.
That was the first time she’d ever said it out loud.
I stared at her.
“Sapphire…”
She didn’t blink. “I feel the tingles too, Warner. It’s not just you. And you gotta accept it. You want my help? Then do that.”
-LIA’S POV-
I woke up to the softest kiss on my cheek.
Zane’s breath was warm against my skin, his fingers stroking the side of my face, like I was something fragile. He smiled when I opened my eyes, brushing my hair back and whispering, “Good morning, love.”
I didn’t reply. Just pulled him down for a kiss, pressing my lips against his. He hummed against my mouth, leaning into me like he didn’t want to let go.
His arms snaked around me, tightening for a second before he pulled away with a grin.
“Come on,” he said. “You’re officially pack royalty now. Time to face the people.”
I groaned. “I thought that means I can do whatever I want. Like stay in bed with you all day.”
Zane chuckled, kissing my forehead, then my nose, then my lips again. “You can. Just not today.”
I groaned again.
He laughed, climbing off of me and taking my hand. “Come on, my love. Time to go.”
“Fine,” I whined, sitting up. “Let me get dressed.”
“But we don’t know what exactly these powers are. Until you’ve tested them a thousand times over, we can’t be sure they won’t fail you at all. So I just want you to be safe either way.”
His voice was so calm, so annoyingly reasonable, that I felt the edge of my anger melt. I hated that he was right.
“Okay,” I mumbled. “Fine. You’re right. Sorry for snapping.”
Zane smiled and kissed the back of my hand. “Don’t apologise. I’d be scared too if someone suggested I might lose a part of myself.”
“I’m not scared,” I muttered, lying through my teeth.
“I know,” he replied, giving me a half smile like he could see right through me. “You’re the bravest girl I know.”
By afternoon, the sun was high, and Zane and I were on the training field behind the pack house.
Zane tossed me a padded stick. “We’ll start easy. Just block me.”
I narrowed my eyes. “You’re not going to go soft on me, are you?”
He grinned. “Never.”
We circled each other for a bit, trading light hits and blocks. Zane showed me a move that involved pivoting and striking low, and when I tried it he caught my wrist and spun me into him?,:10
-LIA’S POV-
We lay in bed, tangled up under the covers, the glass ceiling above us giving a perfect view of the stars. I could see the moon too, bright yet gentle, casting a soft glow over Zane’s face.
He had one arm slung over his stomach, the other brushing against mine as we both stared up silently.
“I really died that night, you know,” he said softly, like he wasn’t sure if he should be saying it at all.
I turned to look at him.
“On the Blood Moon. I was gone, Lia. If you hadn’t screamed for me, begged me to wake up…” His voice cracked. “I wouldn’t have come back. I would have been stuck there for eternity. In that darkness, in that… void. We always believed that the Moon Goddess would come to guide us when we die. That she would bring her light, and lead us to paradise. But it didn’t happen. It was all a lie.”
I sat up instantly and pulled his head into my lap, threading my fingers through his hair as gently as I could.
“Don’t say that,” I whispered. My other hand rested against his cheek, stroking softly. “Don’t even think it, Zane. You’re here. You’re alive. Nothing happened.”
