“I promise I won’t,” Zane said instantly. “I don’t take risks with Lia.”

A smile stretched over my lips, and I could swear I saw a ghost of one on Dad’s face too. He gave a nod and returned his eyes to the television.

“Stay safe, darling,” Mom said.

“Bye,” I said, taking Zane’s hand and leading him outside.

“You really brought me flowers,” I muttered again, glancing at them.

“Yeah. You’re my girlfriend. It’s allowed.”

I snorted. “Fair enough.”

We reached his car and like a perfect gentleman, he opened the door for me. I thanked him and sat inside, watching him as he moved around the car to get in himself.

I couldn’t describe how happy I felt to see him like this. Back on his feet. Out and about. Perfectly healthy and healed.

He raised a brow at me as he started the engine. “What?”

I looked away, shaking my head. “Just thinking about how much I love you.”

“Well, multiply that with ten, and you end up with my love for you.”

The moment we walked into school, about ten heads turned. Not subtle glances, either. People were actually staring. Like they’d seen a ghost.

Someone whispered, “Zane Adams is back? Thank God.”

Another muttered, “I thought he moved away…”

Okay, wow.

Popular boys were clearly missed a lot. He barely even talked to anyone except the Hounds, and yet, everyone still seemed so concerned about him.

We made it halfway through the hallway when Rhonda and Bethany suddenly popped up. We shared a lot of classes with them, and I didn’t particularly like them.

“Zane!” Rhonda said, smiling like her face might break. “Oh my God, you’re alive!”

“Literally,” Bethany added, giggling.

He blinked. “I’m fine.”

Rhonda stepped a little closer. “Where were you? You just vanished. We thought something terrible happened.”

“She almost cried,” Bethany chuckled. “She kept stalking your socials. Why have you guys stopped posting, by the way? Is Lia Snow rubbing off on you?”

My jaw clenched.

I was rubbing on him, but not in the way they suggested.

In the other, much more literal way.

Zane didn’t offer them a response, just turned to his locker like they didn’t even exist.

But the girls didn’t want to give up.

“You look amazing, by the way,” Rhonda said, stepping even closer to him. “This new hair cut really suits you.” She reached up and ran a hand through his hair, making Zane catch her wrist.

That was it.

Something hot and unfamiliar rushed through me.

-LIA’S POV-

My hands clenched, and I turned around before I’d say or do something I’d regret.

Behind me, Zane snapped, “Keep your hands off of me if you wanna keep them, you understand? Leave us alone.”

I glanced back.

Their faces were red with embarrassment.

Zane let her hand go with a jerk, and they quickly scurried away, whispering to each other.

Zane reached for my hand. “Hey. You okay?”

I nodded, trying to focus on my breathing. “Yeah,” I muttered. “I don’t like how she touched you.”

“I stopped her,” Zane said, pulling me closer.

“I know. It’s the bond, I think,” I said quietly. “It’s getting stronger and I think it’s changing me. Making me more… possessive or something.”

Zane smiled like that was the best thing he’d ever heard. “You know that’s kind of hot, right?”

I shoved him lightly, rolling my eyes. “You’re impossible.”

“Still hot, though.”

Before I could reply, the Hounds approached us.

“Alright, lovebirds,” Ajax groaned. “Save it for after school.”

“Or the janitor’s closet,” Aaron added.

Sheila laughed. “Let them be. They’re adorable.”

Zane grinned and threw an arm around my shoulder. “Yeah, we are. Ajax is just jealous.”

I was about to say something when I caught Warner staring at me. Not at both of us. Just me.

He looked… off.

Not suspicious. But like he was studying me or something.

I frowned a little but didn’t say anything.

“Can we get to class now?” Ajax asked. “This is a place of learning. Not romance.”

“Sure,” I said. “Let’s go. Exams are coming up anyway, and we are so behind everything.”

I didn’t really care, but I was trying to.

First period was English, which was usually chill, except for the fact that our teacher looked like she’d been waiting to retire for a decade.

Zane and I walked in, and she handed him a pink slip.

“Principal wants to see you, Mr. Adams,” she said.

Zane gave me a look. I gave him a nod. “Go. I’ll hold your seat hostage.”

He leaned down and kissed my temple, then left.

I dropped into the middle seat between Christy and Nathan.

Christy sighed. “If I have to hear about Romeo and Juliet’s ‘tragic love’ one more time, I’m going to commit a tragic crime.”

Nathan chuckled. “Didn’t you cry the first time you read it?”

“That was before I realized Juliet was dumb.”

I smiled, then looked up just as Rhonda walked into the class.

She headed straight down our row, paused at our desk, and gave us a slow once-over.

“Didn’t know all the cool boys were adopting losers now,” she said, loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. Her eyes flicked to Christy. “Or dating them. Cute.”

Christy’s jaw tightened.

And so did mine.

This girl was pressing buttons I didn’t know I had.

But the second that familiar heat surged up inside me, the door opened again.

Zane walked back in.

The tension in my chest evaporated like it was never there.
