I was dead again.

I searched for the light. For the Moon Goddess to welcome me.

But she didn’t come.

She was supposed to welcome her disciples when we died.

But where was she?

It was too dark. No sign of her. No sign of light.

No sign of life.

Shadows even darker than the void crawled around me.

I opened my mouth to gasp. To draw in a sharp breath.

But there was no air.

Just emptiness.

The shadows laughed at me-chilling, horrible cackles.

Il temibled, but I couldn’t move my feet. I couldn’t’ toovamy auns.

I was trapped.

Painshot through me next.

The same one I died through.

Minibombssexploding under my skin. Shattering my ribss. Bursting my llung.lowing off half my face.

I lost ameye..Illmybrain. My veins and my arteries..

The pain was excruciating.

But there was no death. Moend.

Just torture. Unending. Continuous. Persistent.

It went on for hours. Days. Years.

There was no way to know..

I was exhausted..

I wished for death. Or for life. Foranstthing except this.

The Goddess didn’t come. She didn’t come tto guide me. She didn’t come to hold my hand. To bring melight. To help me fight the lost souls.

I gave up.

Over and over.

But nothing cared. Nothing changed. No one was coming.

And then a voice.

Her.

Lia’s.

Loud and commanding.

“Come back to me, Zane,” she ordered. “Please come back to me.”

She stood at a distance, I could see the outline.

Her eyes gleamed. Violet. Bright. Relieving.

My body answered to her command.

My feet moved, something beat inside my chest, air escaped my mouth.

Suddenly, I felt alive.

I rushed towards her, with no will of my own, no control over my own body, only desperate to fulfil her command.

She was far away, and everything ached.

But I didn’t stop. I didn’t want to. But I couldn’t have, even if I did.

This wasn’t my doing.

It was hers.

I reached her.

And my eyes shot open.

Lia was crying under me, her eyes wide, tears streaking her face.

-LIA’S POV-

Zane met my gaze, his eyes black with desire, but froze as soon as he saw me.

There was a heat in my eyes, so I had an idea that they were glowing.

But Zane’s reaction was odd.

He stilled completely, eyes returning back to blue, like he didn’t like me anymore.

My face fell, eyebrows drawing together.259

My eyes returned to normal.

But he didn’t relax.

“Zane,” I said softly, my insides still warm from his touch.

No answer.

“Zane,” I said again, lightly touching his cheek.

His skin felt cold.

My breath caught..

“Zane, you’re cold,” I said, shaking him slightly.

He didn’t blink. He didn’t respond. Or react.

It was like… he was merely a shell of himself, a body without a soul.

My heart sank into my chest, fear crawling up my throat.

“Zane?” I asked, my voice turning desperate now. “Baby,” I whispered, staring into his eyes.

It felt like he saw right through me. Like I didn’t even exist.

His heart raged, pounding inside his chest, like he was terrified.

Goosebumps covered his skin next, and he started to tremble all over, even as his eyes remained unblinking. They started to twitch, redden, and tear up-but they didn’t shut, like they were being held open by something.

“Zane,” I said louder now, my own heart thundering. “Zane!” My voice broke, hot tears rolling down my cheeks, my lips quivering. “Please come back to me. I-I can’t lose you again. What’s wrong?”

He gasped, a wave of energy travelling through his body, as if regaining his soul.

He blinked now, staring at me like he was surprised to see me there. Like he was confused.

“Lia,” he said softly, examining my face and wiping away my tears. “What… what happened?”

A sob left my lips, and I stared up at him, gliding my fingers over his cheeks. “You’re here,” I said. “You’re right here.”

He blinked a few more times, then nodded. “Yes. Yes, I’m right here. I’m okay. It’s okay.”
