Something else.

A voice.

Not mine. Not from any throat. It came from everywhere. The sky. The ground. The trees.

A whisper that turned to thunder.

“Marked by two… bound by one… her choice will decide the fate of all…”

The magic around me froze.

The wolves lifted their heads.

The witches stirred.

Even the flames on the far end of the battlefield bent inward-drawn to the sound, the weight of it. The prophecy.

I had fulfilled it.

We had thought the choice would be between males. Between Blake and Zane.

But it wasn’t.

It had been about ruthlessness, and mercy.

The blood moon had come early.

Zane had died at my feet.

And I had chosen mercy.

I looked around at them all-the wolves, the witches, the bleeding survivors, the broken.

Everyone waited.

But there was no relief in their eyes.

Only fear.

Only awe.

Because I wasn’t just the girl Zane loved anymore.

I was the one the earth had lifted. The one who’d screamed the sky open. The one whose voice made armies crumble.

The ground lowered again, gently, like it was light as a feather.

The Hounds rushed forward, but stopped a safe distance away.

Their heads lowered in sadness, all of them-Aaron, Sheila, Warner, Ajax.

Soft cries escaped them. Broken. Pained.

I looked down at Zane one last time, brushing his hair from his forehead, my heart breaking all over again.

J’I didn’t want this,” I said. “I just wanted you.”

But the prophecy didn’t care.

The power didn’t care.

“Come back to me, Zane,” I begged, voice cracking. “Please come back to me.”

-CAITLYN’S POV-

My head pounded like it had been hit by a brick.

Everything hurt.

My legs, my arms, my abdomen.

But worst of all, my chest.

What had happened to me?

The last thing I remembered… I was fighting a war. For the right thing. For our freedom from monsters.

And the next thing I knew…

Wait, where was I?

I slowly opened my eyes, squinting at the sudden light.

The room was too bright.

And I was on something soft.

Warm.

Like a bed.

No, it was a bod.

I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through me, forcing me back down.

I groaned, gritting my teeth.

What the hell had happened?

It all came back to me like a flood.

My eyes widened, breath catching in my throat.

Blake.

He… he had kidnapped me. We were fighting, he was protecting Lia, and then something pricked my side. I had fainted. And he’d brought me here.

I looked around, forcing myself to stay calm.

At least I wasn’t handcuffed to the bed like he’d done to her.

My hands flew to my neck, fingers scrabbling for dents or punctures.

It was clean. No bite marks.

I released a slow breath, then tried to sit up again, this time succeeding.

I was in a bedroom.

But it wasn’t Blake’s room, the one I remembered from his pack house. It was a different one.

I kicked the blanket off of me and stood up, a wave of nausea and dizziness knocking me down again.

A frustrated cry left my lips, angry tears forming in my eyes.

What had he given me? He’d left me powerless. Vulnerable.

The door clicked, making me freeze.

I stared with wide eyes as he walked in, changed into a casual black t shirt and jeans.

My blood boiled..

Without wasting a second, I shot out of bed again, charging at him.

“Woah,” Blake said, grabbing me effortlessly. He caught hold of my wrists and turned me around, pulling me back against his chest. He pinned my arms against my stomach, immobilizing me.

“Let me go! You piece of shit! You traitor!” I screamed, struggling and fighting with all my might.

It had zero effect on him.

“Calm down,” Blake said, holding me tighter to himself. “Caitlyn, relax.”

“Let go of me!” I yelled at the top of my voice. “I will kill you, Blake Walker, and everyone you’ve ever loved. You will die howling like the animal you are. You will regret the day you met me. I will carve your heart out and feed it to your own pack, you will see.”

There was a moment of silence.
