Because in the strangest way, it reminded me of how Sapphire. looked at me that day.

In her creepy bedroom prison.

My hand went to my chest, fingers grazing the faint warmth that still lived there. That glow she’d left when she touched me hadn’t faded. Not completely. Some nights, I swore it pulsed under my skin. Like she was still out there somewhere, thinking of me.

But she hadn’t come back.

No notes anymore. No enchantments.

Not a word. Not even a whisper.

–

And that unsettled me more than all of this.

“Warner?” Blake said.

I blinked, snapping back to now.

“I meant what I said,” Blake repeated. “And I’ll keep my distance. From everyone. Just point me at the enemy, and let me earn my way out.”

I didn’t answer.

He finally dared to look at Aaron again. “What I did was to have my mate close. It was wrong, but it stemmed from the fear of losing her. Not to pain or death, but to a life with someone else. I think, you might understand, if even in the slightest. I only wish to repent.”

Sheila sighed.

“You’ve got a lot to make up for, Blake,” she said, voice like ice. “Start with sticking to your promises in this war. Then we’ll see.”

Blake bowed his head slightly.

And walked away.

I stood there for a while, eyes fixed on the door he left through.

I didn’t forgive him.

But something told me this fight wasn’t just going to be about blades and bullets.

Some fights were quieter.

Harder,

More strategic.

They were about choosing not to kill someone you still wanted to. About control. Holding back.

And maybe a little bit of mercy.

I didn’t do too well with that.

A warrior was supposed to be ruthless.

But I’d try anyway, hoping the girl didn’t cross my path.

If she hurt someone, though, anyone from the pack I was obligated to protect, I would rip her throat out without blinking.

-CAITLYN’S POV-

The training compound smelled like metal and smoke.

Every time I exhaled, the cold stung my lungs like punishment. My palms were scratched from blade drills, my back drenched in sweat, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t.

“Again,” I hissed through my teeth, swinging the silver short sword up into a block, then twisting to slam it down on the training dummy’s shoulder.

The instructor raised an eyebrow. “You’ve done that combo twenty times.”

“Then twenty-one won’t kill me,” I muttered, spinning and slicing through the next move before he could respond.

He didn’t argue. None of them did after I snapped at the Commander that day for accusing me of disloyalty.

I was going to kill Lia Snow.

They whispered she was prophecy-born. Chosen. Some vessel of moon magic. No one had seen her powers in action. But fear didn’t need proof. Only silence.

And Blake…

I swallowed the name like poison.

Blake Walker.

He had occupied my thoughts more than I would ever admit.

I was supposed to hate him. Despise him. me

His existence was making question everything. Including my sanity.

But that was still fine.

The Commander doubting my loyalty wasn’t.

Killing Lia Snow would prove my honesty.

And if he stood in the way, I’d kill him too.

My thoughts were scattered. Maybe even my feelings.

But my purpose was clear.

I would show them all that none of them hated werewolves more than I did.

None of them had lost more than I did.

And no number of Blake Walkers could change my mind. No amount of tingles or desire could move me.

I wasn’t meant to be mated to them.

Only to kill them.

But where was he?

He’d been seen near Zane’s territory. Near her. Crawling back to her like she still had a hold on him.

He’d told me their bond was broken.

Maybe he lied to mess with my head.

To fool me into thinking that there was something between us. That those sparks weren’t some trick, but a supernatural pull drawing us together.

It wouldn’t matter though.

When I saw him again, I’d drive a silver blade through his ribs and twist until he’d bleed out.

“Focus,” the instructor snapped.

I hadn’t realized I had stopped.

“Sorry,” I muttered and reset my stance.

The Order’s labs were running without pause. Weapons were coming in faster than briefings. Silver bombs. Wolfsbane dispersal units. Mist grenades. Coated blades.

One drop of this gas and every wolf within thirty feet would choke. Burn. Collapse.

Then there was the serum.

Still experimental. Still lethal.

It was designed to bend. Suppress instinct. Disrupt hierarchy. Take a wolf’s will and repurpose it.

I’d seen one of the early trials. A captured rogue, barely older than me. One injection. He collapsed. Seized. Then stood and obeyed. Not out of fear. But because the serum rewrote the command centre in his head.

Now they were packing it into darts and threading it into throwing knives.

They weren’t just preparing for Lia.

They were preparing to erase her. Erase them all.
