“Okay,” I nodded. “Noted.”
Warner took a fighting stance. “Keep your feet grounded, core tight, fists up.”
I clenched my fists, following his instructions.
We started slow. Warner moved in calculated patterns, jabbing and stepping with precision. I tried to remember what he taught me. But he was fast. Too fast.
He swiped my legs, and I landed with a hard grunt.
“Up,” he barked.
I stood, brushing dirt off my hoodie. My jaw clenched.
We went again. He lunged. I blocked. He twisted, caught my arm, and went to pin me-
But then something inside me snapped.
My fingers curved, and with a shimmer under the moonlight, claws burst out. I shoved him back with surprising force.
I gasped as he stumbled. Not far, but enough.
He stared at me, looking impressed.
I stared at my claws, silver and shiny.
“Zane,” Warner called. “Your turn. She has claws.”
Zane chuckled, pushing off the tree and walking towards me. “You okay?”
“I think so. That was… new.”
“You’re stronger than you think,” he said, leaning in and pressing a kiss to my head. Ajax made loud retching sounds, making me laugh. Zane smiled too. “Let’s test it.”
Zane and I squared off. My chest was already rising and falling fast, adrenaline burning under my skin.
Zane let me come to him. I tried to strike, and he caught my wrists. One swift motion and I was pinned, back to his chest, arms trapped in his grip.
“You need to be unpredictable,” he murmured. “Don’t just act. Think.”
“Okay,” I muttered.
He let go, and we tried again. This time, I tried to use my new claws. I attempted to slash at his chest, but it ended the same way. He caught my wrist easily, trapping me again.
I groaned. “Again,” I said.
We tried a third time.
This time I pushed him back successfully.
But Zane attacked now, taking me by surprise. He shoved me by the waist, catching me just before I’d hit the ground. My jaw clenched in annoyance as he steadied me, turned me around, and trapped me against him once more. My wrists pressed against my chest, and I struggled against his hold.
“Let go,” I snapped.
“Say please,” he teased.
“Zane,” I warned, my voice sharper now.
Nothing.
My heart pounded. Something surged in me-hot and sudden. My vision blurred at the edges, and for a second, I saw a flash of violet light.
“Let go,” I said again, my tone sharp.
Zane’s arms dropped.
Immediately. No hesitation. Like he had no other choice.
I turned to him, and found him frowning.
He blinked at me, seeming confused. He glanced down at his hands.
I didn’t wait.
I lunged.
My shoulder slammed into his chest, knocking him backward. He caught himself, barely, but I was already on him.
I twisted, drove him to the ground, and pinned him down with a clawed hand on his chest. My legs straddled his waist, locking him in place.
He stared up at me, stunned.
I grinned. My chest heaved. I could hear the blood pounding in my ears.
“Did I just win?”
Ajax let out a low whistle. “You didn’t just win. You wrecked. him.”
Warner looked less impressed. His arms were crossed, jaw tight. “That was unexpected.”
Zane didn’t speak at first. He was still staring, like trying to make sense of what just happened.
Then he exhaled slowly, allowing a smile onto his lips. “That was hot. You actually won, fair and square. Like a true Luna. My
Luna.”
I shifted off him, brushing off my sleeves. “Or a goddess,” I said smugly.
Zane sat up, still staring at me, as though trying to figure something out. “Yes. Like a goddess.”
My heart thudded with exhilaration, pride coursing through me.
I offered him a hand, and he took it, standing up.
I grinned up at him.
“Maybe I’m finally becoming what I’m supposed to be,” I said. “That was cool, wasn’t it?”
Before Zane could reply, Ajax did.
“Yeah,” Ajax said, looking impressed. “A badass.”
Zane ruffled my hair, a small smile on his face.
I looked down at my hands again. The claws had retracted. I felt more human, but more dangerous too.
Warner didn’t speak. He just turned and walked off a few steps, staring at the trees.
The night air felt electric.
I looked back at the patch of dirt where I’d pinned Zane down, then up at the moon above.
Whatever was changing in me-I wasn’t running from it anymore.
I was ready to face it head-on. Whether anybody liked it or not.
-ZANE’S POV-
My chest felt tight as we made our way back to the pack house.
There was a silence in the car, none of us speaking.
Ajax was chill, I knew, but Warner’s face was hard. He avoided meeting my gaze, almost like he was afraid I’d read his thoughts if we did.
As if he didn’t want me to know what was on his mind.
I didn’t blame him. I knew why he was behaving this way.
We entered the pack house, and almost immediately, he turned to me. “I’m gonna get to bed. See you guys tomorrow.” He stepped towards the stairs, but I stopped him.
“Wait.”
He froze, his back tensing.
“Get Aaron and Sheila and meet me in the lounge.”
A meeting was necessary. I had to discuss this with the Hounds, tell them exactly what happened in the forest.
