“To rip his head off, why else?”
“Dude, no,” he said, standing up. “You’re not gonna kill him.”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“Because Zane hasn’t told you to,” he said like it was obvious.
I gritted my teeth. “It’s only because I failed him.”
“Goddess,” Ajax whispered, shaking his head. “That’s not why, Warner. First off, you do realise Lia is mated to him, right? And she’s not human. Killing Blake would hurt her. How could you even think about that? You think Zane wasn’t capable of doing it himself?”
“I’d leave him alive. Barely.”
“That’s better,” he nodded, frowning at me. “But that too is unnecessary now.”
“He could try kidnapping her again, Ajax. How is dealing with. Blake unnecessary?”
“Because, my brother,” he placed his hands on my shoulders, “Lia isn’t mated to him anymore.”
Now I frowned.
“What?”
“She is the Moon Goddess’s daughter. When Blake forced a mark on her, their bond snapped instead of strengthening. He’s out of our lives for good. Lia said he’s leaving town.”
My shoulders slumped slowly.
“You’re serious?”
“Yes.”
I pushed his hands off me, running a frustrated hand through my hair. A growl left my lips and I punched the wall, forming a crack.
“Okay, not the reaction I expected,” Ajax muttered. “What’s this for?”
“I failed Zane, and I didn’t get a chance to fix it,” I said, my throat tight. “I’m his strongest wolf, Ajax, and I let a loser like Blake get the best of me. Zane will never respect me again.”
“Really?”
I froze at his voice, turning towards the door.
Zane stood there with his arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe.
“Alpha,” I muttered.
“Zane,” he replied, tone filled with annoyance. He walked up to me, eyes narrowed. “You really think I lost respect for you over one little incident, Warner?”
I kept my eyes on the floor.
“I should have protected her.”
“Yeah. So should I have. And Sheila, and Aaron. And Ajax. Even the rest of the pack. But we all failed. So? Do I lose respect for everyone?”
I sighed. “It’s different for me, Zane,” I forced out.
“It is,” he agreed, making me glance at him. “Which is why, I need you to make it up to me.”
“How?” I asked, fists balling at my sides, eyes blackening.
“Easy there, tiger,” Zane smacked my head, making me frown. “I don’t want you to murder anyone or break someone’s legs.”
I blinked. “Then?”
“When the time comes, when she’s ready, I want you to help me train Lia. Because you’re still my best warrior, Warner.”
-SHEILA’S POV-
Aaron’s arm was warm around my waist, his fingers tracing lazy patterns on my stomach. I sighed, eyes fluttering closed, and leaned into him, letting my head rest against his chest. His heartbeat was steady. So steady. Just like him.
“I could stay like this forever,” I said softly.
“Me too,” he whispered, pressing a kiss into my hair. “No patrols. No drama. Just you and me.”
His voice was low and scratchy, the kind of voice he only used when we were alone. I smiled and twisted a little to face him. He looked at me like I was the only thing that mattered.
“I mean it,” he said, brushing his knuckles across my cheek. “I’d throw the whole pack away for this. Including Zane.”
I chuckled. “Shh. Someone could hear you.”
“Let them. Zane would do the same for Lia.”
“You’d be the worst beta if you did that.”
“I don’t care,” he replied, running a hand through my hair. “I’d rather be a good mate than a good beta. You’re the most important thing in this world, Sheila.”
His lips met mine again, slow and familiar, and I felt that same stupid flutter I always did when he kissed me. Like the whole world narrowed to just his mouth and his hands and the way he always made me feel safe.
Knock knock.
Aaron pulled back with an audible groan. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Another knock.
He sat up, running a hand through his hair. I frowned. “You want me to get it?”
“No,” he muttered. “I got it.”
I watched him climb out of bed and pull a hoodie over his head. But something shifted in his expression just before he reached. the door.
“Derek,” he snapped.
I sat up straighter, confused.
“I told you not to bother me tonight.”
“I’m sorry, I was just-” Derek began.
Aaron stepped half out the door like he was ready to fight. I had never seen him like that. Not with Derek. Not with anyone.
“I just came to inform you that Alpha is back. He is with Warner and Ajax.”
“I don’t need to be informed of their whereabouts all the time, alright? Now don’t come back unless it’s something important.”
Within seconds, he returned inside, his eyes black with anger. stared as he turned to the door, muttering something under his breath, before slamming it shut harder than necessary. He stood there for a second, his back facing me, fists clenched at his sides.
“Aaron?” I said quietly.
He didn’t answer.
I slid out of bed, walking over to him. “Hey,” I said softly, reaching for his hand. “What’s going on? That wasn’t like you.”
He finally turned to me, his eyes slowly shifting from black to normal.
“What’s wrong?” I asked again. “Why are you so on edge?”
“What happened with you and Warner,” he said, voice tight, “that was just a glimpse, Sheila.”
“What do you you mean?”
“The Order isn’t just messing around anymore,” he said. “They’re planning something. Something big. And it’s coming soon. We’ve had skirmishes before, but this feels different. They’re smart. Quiet. Organized. And we’re still trying to figure out what they’re after.”
I grabbed his arm, moving closer to him. “Aaron. It’s gonna be fine. Nothing’s gonna happen, alright?”
He stared at me, his gaze intent. “I’m scared, Sheila. I can’t lose you again. Not to them. Not to anything.” and
My heart tightened. I offered him a smile, reaching up brushing my hand against his cheek. “You won’t, baby. Blake just took us by surprise that night. We weren’t expecting it. But now we’re prepared. I’m stronger than you think.”
“I know,” he sighed, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me into a hug. “I know you’re strong. But I’m not.”
I laughed. “Shut up. You’re much stronger.”
“Not when it comes to you. I don’t see sense when you’re in question, Sheila.”
“Because you love me. It’s okay. I’m your mate.”
“I wish I’d taken that bullet that night, and not you.”
