I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him down, crashing my lips against his.

Once again, bliss took over, as if I were kissing him for the first time ever.

Every inch of me filled with warmth and tingles and goosebumps, numbing every thought except him.

It was extraordinary. It was nothing I’d ever felt before. And it was exactly how I felt every time I kissed him ever since the mark.

Neither of us wanted to pull away. Neither of us thought there was anything better to do.

Until my phone rang.

I tried to turn away.

“No,” Zane growled against my lips, claiming them again.

I smiled against his mouth, running my hands through his hair.

But the phone kept ringing, relentless.

“Fine,” he muttered, grabbing it for me. He glanced at the screen and stilled above me, eyes turning black.

I didn’t have to ask him who it was. That much was clear by his reaction.

“Zane,” I said softly. “It’s okay.”

“No,” he snapped, making me flinch. “It’s not okay, Lia. I’m going to kill him when I see him. You know that, right?”

I stared up at him, biting my lip. “Didn’t you say werewolves go mad if their mates die?”

“Did I?”

“I think you did.”

“What’s your point?” He rolled his eyes. “You’re not-” he caught himself. His jaw ticked. “So I just have to tolerate him? Because if he dies, something might happen to you too?”

“I’m not too happy about it either,” I muttered.

The phone rang again, and Zane practically snarled, answering the call.

“What?” he barked out.

“Give her the phone,” Blake said.

I could hear him so clearly, it was as if he was right in front of me, instead of on the phone. My hearing had enhanced a lot.

“She doesn’t wanna talk to you, you piece of shit. You really thought you’d win her over by doing this? By forcing her? It didn’t work the way you hoped, Walker. Her body shut down because of what you did. She almost died in my arms because of what you did!”

“Zane,” I whispered, my eyes wide. His nails had sharpened to points, his eyes were darker than the void, and his ears were starting to darken in colour. I placed my hand against his cheek, making him glance at me.

“Lia,” Blake said over the phone. “I need to see you.”

Zane opened his mouth to respond, but I beat him to it.

“I’m sure you know what I am, Blake, so believe me when I tell you this: if I see you again, I will kill you for what you did to me. Don’t ever show me your face again. I want nothing to do with you.”

I took the phone from Zane’s hand and ended the call.

“As soon as you feel better, Lia, I am going after him.”

“Zane-“

“No,” he pressed his finger to my lips, cutting me off. “No.”

I stared up at him, still trapped underneath his body.

Then I reached up and kissed him, making him immediately melt against me.

“I love you too and this works for most things, but not for this,” he murmured, kissing me harder.

I smiled, closing my eyes and enjoying his touch. I could deal with his murder plans later on.

-CHRISTY’S POV-

The beeping was the first thing I noticed. Soft, steady, annoying. It tugged me awake like someone was tapping on my skull over and over again.

Then the pain followed. A dull, pounding ache at the back of my head that throbbed with every heartbeat. I tried to move and instantly regretted it. My whole body felt like it had been slammed into a wall. Which might have actually happened. Yeah. Pretty much.

I opened my eyes slowly, squinting against the bright lights. above me.

A hospital. I was in a hospital.

Why would they make hospital rooms so damn bright? Weren’t patients supposed to rest?

I looked down at my arms. Tubes. IVs. I looked around. Machines. Monitors. A cup of water with a straw.

What the hell had even happened?

Last thing I remembered, I was at prom. Sad that Nathan never asked me out. And then-

My heart raced.

The girls’ washroom. The sound of a gun outside. Sheila. Warner. And Blake.

He looked like a monster.

I’d hidden behind Lia like a child.

My head had hit something hard. Darkness followed.

I blinked fast, trying to get rid of the sudden rush of nausea that came with it.

Lia.

Where was she? gone

She’d been there. Blake had shoved me out of the way and after her. Taken her. And I’d just passed out like some useless extra in a horror movie.

“Lia,” I whispered, my voice barely a sound. My throat felt like it glass was lodged into it.

I tried to sit up again. Still a bad idea. The room spun and I sank back against the pillow, breathing slow.

That’s when I noticed I wasn’t alone.

There was someone on the sofa in the corner. Curled up in a hoodie, long legs bent awkwardly to fit on the cushions, messy hair covering most of his face.

I stared for a few seconds, totally unsure I was seeing right.

Maybe I’d finally gone mad. Maybe I was hallucinating about the most incredible guy in the world. Maybe my heart simply wished to see him there, so it decided to imagine him.

Nathan?

I stared for a while, waiting for my vision to clear. For his face to change and turn into my brother’s. Maybe even my dad’s. But it didn’t happen.

It was Nathan. Nathan King. Captain of the soccer team. My lab partner for two semesters. My literal crush since ninth grade. The same guy who always treated me like a bro.

And now he was sleeping on a sofa in my hospital room like this was totally normal?

He shifted a little, his hoodie sliding down. Then he stretched and blinked awake, rubbing his face. His eyes met mine and he sal up fast.

“You’re awake,” he said, standing and walking over to my bed. “Oh thank God. Are you okay? Do you know where you are?”

“Hospital,” I croaked. “Why are you here?”

He smiled, a little sheepishly. “Zane brought you to the gym. Said he found you unconscious near the washroom.”

It was inside the washroom, but yeah, minor details.

I blinked. “Prom?”

“Yeah. You were out cold, and he just carried you in like it was nothing. People freaked out. Some girl called an ambulance. Then he… left.”

Of course he did. He had to go after her.

Nathan held out the water for me. I took it and sipped slowly, my hands still shaking. It helped a little, but my throat still felt weird.

“I stayed with you ’til they moved you here,” he said quietly. “Didn’t want you to be alone.”
