I smiled, staring at her.

I would make this the most unforgettable night of her life. Even if my mind was now in two different places.

I didn’t know what Blake was up to.

But I’d find out soon enough.

-ZANE’S POV-

The gym didn’t even look like the gym anymore. Strings of lights hung from the ceiling like shooting stars, casting a gentle, golden glow throughout the room. The bleachers were covered with layers of black fabric, giving the space an almost magical feel. At the entrance was an arch decorated in flowers and twinkling lights, looking straight out of a wedding. Slow music played in the background, low and steady, keeping the room mellow despite the chatter.

And there she was: my breathtakingly beautiful mate, Lia.

She stood in the centre, everything else dull in comparison. Wearing a deep, red dress that flaunted her curves, she’d made it impossible to take my eyes off of her. The fabric sparkled when she moved, making her look like the moon’s daughter. Her hair was curled, falling over one shoulder.

When she spotted me across the room, her face lit up, and I swear I forgot how to breathe.

This was why she didn’t let me pick her up for prom. She wanted me to see her under all those lights.

I walked up to her, my steps feeling almost predatory as a million, indecent thoughts crossed my mind at once.

“You look…” I stopped in front of her, letting my eyes drink in her appearance. Her body. Her beautiful face. “Dangerous.”

She frowned, narrowing her eyes slightly. “Dangerous?”

“Yeah. For my heart. And for your own self, love.”

A smile took over her lips, and she rolled her eyes. “Idiot.”

I stared at her, unable to form other coherent thoughts.

“Zane,” she laughed, meeting my gaze. “Stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Stop looking at me like that.” She blushed.

“No.”

“Please?”

“No,” I stated, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her to myself. She gasped, eyes widening. I brought my lips to her ear. “Don’t you dare ask me to stay away tonight. I will touch you as much as I want. Stare at you as much as I want. And kiss you as much as I want. Is that clear?”

She breathed hard, pressing her hands to my chest. “Okay,” she whispered.

“Good girl.”

I leaned away to glance at her again. She lowered her flustered. eyes,

I smiled, taking her chin with my free hand and tilting her face up. “You didn’t tell me how I look.”

She smiled, looking away for a second before whispering, “You clean up pretty well too, Zane.”

“I do, really. I could clean your lipstick right off.”

She laughed, hiding her face in my chest.

I smirked, victorious.

The rest of the group joined us near the punch table. Aaron had his arm wrapped tight around Sheila’s waist. Her black velvet dress caught the light, making a few heads turn as they passed.

“I swear, if one more guy stares at my mate, I’m shifting right here,” Aaron grumbled.

Sheila rolled her eyes, smiling. “Relax, big guy. I only have for you.” eyes

Ajax and Warner stood nearby, both looking half-amused and half-bored.

“God,” Christy said, appearing beside Lia. “You two should just date each other at this point.” She pointed at the brothers.

“Ew,” Ajax muttered. “I have standards.”

Her purple dress glittered under the lights, and she had sparkly clips in her hair. But her smile didn’t reach her eyes.

Lia noticed at once.

“Did Nathan ask you?” she asked gently.

Christy stiffened, her eyes darting away. “Nope. But it’s fine. I didn’t want to come with a date anyway.”

Lia frowned, but Christy was already changing the subject. “So, Lia, are we dancing or what?”

“Only if I get her first,” I said, tugging Lia towards the dance floor before Christy could argue.

The beat slowed, and I pulled her into my arms. She relaxed against me, her head falling onto my shoulder like she belonged there.

Actually, she did.

Maybe, tonight, everything was finally just right.

The prom lights flickered gold across her face as she smiled up at me, red dress flowing like fire around her legs. For a second, everything felt perfect-her hair brushing her bare shoulders, her fingers laced with mine, the music low and sweet in the background. Sheila and Aaron danced nearby, tangled in each other. Christy was talking to Ajax, pretending she wasn’t watching the doors like she hoped someone else would walk through them.

Then my phone buzzed in my pocket.

I ignored it, not willing to look away from my mate for even a second.

But it kept buzzing, over and over, relentlessly.

Sighing, I pulled it out of my pocket, eyebrows furrowing when I saw the name flashing on the screen.

Emerald.

Why was my pack doctor calling me at this time?

“Just a second, love.” I stepped away from Lia, answering the phone and placing it to my ear. “Yeah?”

“Alpha!” Her voice cracked, shaking with fear. “It’s-it’s the Order. They’re inside,” she whispered.

I froze, the world around me stilling.

-ZANE’S POV-

“How many?” I asked.

“I don’t know. A dozen, maybe more. They-they came through the woods-Alpha, you need to get here. Now.”

I ended the call and turned towards Lia. She was already frowning, staring at me.

“What is it?”

“I have to go.”

“Go where?” Her voice cracked slightly. “What’s wrong?”

I cupped her cheeks, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Something’s happening at the pack house, love. I need you to stay here. With Warner and Sheila. They’ll keep you safe.”

Her eyes widened. “Wait. Zane-“

“I’ll be back,” I promised, then kissed her quickly before stepping away. “Don’t leave the school.”

“Hounds!” I said, louder. They circled me in an instant. I glanced at Warner. “Don’t let her out of your sight. Not for second.”

Warner nodded, tense. Sheila moved closer to Lia.

“Ajax, Aaron. Let’s go.”

I didn’t wait for anything else.

We ran outside, hurrying behind the building, yanking off our shirts and ties. Without a word, we shifted, setting out for the pack house. We ran as fast as we could, muscles stretching, paws pounding against the ground. The surroundings whooshed past us, only two words playing in my mind over and over: my pack.

The scent of smoke hit first, sharp and acidic. Then we heard the sounds-screaming, crashing, growls.

We burst through the front doors of the pack house together, warning snarls filling the air.

An Order soldier turned just in time to see Ajax slam into him, snapping his neck. Aaron lunged past me, dragging two down in one leap. I hit the nearest one hard, knocking him into the wall and tearing into his shoulder. Blood sprayed from his wounds, and he cried out.

Something moved on the upper floor, and I moved just in time to dodge a bullet. It lodged itself into one of my wolves, who cried out and fell to the ground. The bullet hissed inside his skin.
