Before Ajax could pick up Zane’s phone, I reached for it.

“Wait,” I said, cancelling the call. “Can I call Blake instead? Let’s just speak to him directly.”

Zane nodded, unbothered. “Sure. If that will bring you peace.”

“Thank you.”

My fingers were shaky as I dialed Blake’s number, my heart in my mouth. It began to ring, and I held my breath, praying he’d pick up.

The phone rang a total of four times, my stomach knotting tighter and tighter with every ring.

But then the phone clicked.

A groggy, familiar voice answered. “Hello? Zane?”

I released a breath, glancing at Zane. He shrugged, mouthing ‘I told you’.

Blake sounded half-asleep, like he’d just woken up from a long nap.

“Blake?” I said softly.

“Lia?” His voice perked up. “Is everything okay? Is Zane alright?”

“Yes, yes,” I said quickly. “Everything is fine. Uh… are you okay? You weren’t at school, so… Christy got worried.”

There was a short silence on the other end.

“I’m fine, Lia. I just needed a day off. Just resting. Don’t worry.”

“Okay,” I replied.

“Anything else? You called in the middle of the night because I wasn’t at school?”

I scrunched up my nose. “Actually, I had a bad dream. So Zane thought to check on you.”

Zane rolled his eyes, making me suppress a laugh.

Blake was silent again for a moment. “That’s really nice of him, tell him I said thanks. And I’m fine. Nothing to worry about. No more nightmares, alright?”

I exhaled, the tightness in my chest loosening.

“Okay,” I said. “Take care, Blake.”

“You too, Lia. Good night. Say thanks to Zane.”

“I will. Good night.”

I smiled against the phone screen and then hung up.

I turned back to Zane, curling into him, burying my face in his chest. “I’m sorry. I freaked out for no reason.”

He wrapped his arms tighter around me and kissed my forehead. “It’s okay. It’s natural for you to worry.”

“I hope you didn’t feel bad.” I looked up at him.

“I’ll live,” he said with a nod, making me smile.

I leaned up and pressed my lips to his. When I pulled away, he smirked. “I’ll live longer now.”

I chuckled, wrapping my arms around him and closing my eyes.

Everything was fine. I was just being paranoid.

-LIA’S POV-

I held Zane’s hand as we walked toward the lockers, passing by hoards of chattering students and excited girls talking about dresses and dates. Someone cheered loudly, turning all heads towards them. A group of boys was doing a fully choreographed dance for a girl, who was staring at the one in the middle, smiling:

I laughed, amused.

“What?” Zane frowned, stepping in front of me to block my view of them. “Why are you so happy?”

“Hey,” I clicked my tongue, trying to move around him to watch.

Zane moved with me, scowling. “I already asked you for prom, love, and you said yes. No need to watch others anymore.”

I laughed incredulously. “What? So?”

“So… people are being extra for no reason,” he muttered. “What’s the point? Where is the heart-felt confessions? All this is just for show.”

“And I would like to enjoy it,” I said, pushing him aside, but linking our arms.

“You don’t think I did too little, right?”

“Of course not!” I replied, shooting him a look. “I love you. You could’ve asked me with a paper ring and I would still say yes and think of it as the most romantic thing.”

Zane smiled now, deflating. “Okay then. You can enjoy this.”

“Idiot.”

We stood watching the dance, commenting about how it was longer than we expected. The Hounds and Chris joined us a moment later, the two girls whispering and giggling about prom dresses and hairdos. Their excitement shone in their eyes, and Chris quickly approached me, yanking my arm free from Zane’s. He scowled, but didn’t say anything.

“I can’t believe Sheila’s wearing that black velvet dress,” Christy squealed, eyes wide. “It’s so sleek and perfect for her. She’s going to knock everyone out.”

Sheila laughed, nudging Christy lightly. “Stop, you’re making me want to dump Aaron and go with you instead.”

“In her dreams,” Aaron announced, wrapping a protective arm around his mate.

“My dreams about her are much wilder than prom, honey,” Christy said, winking. Before Aaron could retort, she continued, “Have the boys bought their tuxes yet? What about you, Lia?

Did you decide on a dress?”

“I did,” I grinned. “I’m sticking with the red one.”

Zane smiled. “Perfect. I’ll wear a matching tic.”

“Aw,” Christy cooed, “werewolves are excited for prom.”

“Definitely,” Sheila chuckled, gazing up at Aaron. “It’s the most romantic night of junior year. And I think we both need a break from all the wolf stuff.”

I nodded. “Yeah, all that can wait for one night.” I glanced at Christy then. “What about you? Did he ask you yet?”

Christy’s eyes widened, and she shot me a look that said ‘shut up’.

“Ooh,” Ajax hooted, smirking. “Who’s this ‘he’?”

“No one,” Chris said, scowling at me. “No one yet.”

“A secret crush,” Warner said in a bored tone, with a straight face.

“Shut up.” Christy smacked his arm, making him frown.

“We’re not this chill with each other yet,” he muttered, moving away from her.

Zane, Aaron and Ajax burst out laughing.

“What about you two brothers?” I asked, glancing from Ajax to Warner.

“We have each other,” Ajax shrugged.

“And no males yet,” Warner added.

“That’s so sweet. You refuse to look in any other girl’s direction, don’t you?”

“Yes.” They said in unison. crowd around us shifted as

We reached the lockers, and the crowd around us shifted as people opened doors and grabbed books. Zane turned to me, eyes steady and calm.

“Ready for tonight?” he asked.

I nodded. “More than ready. I’m looking forward to it.”

“Good,” he said, pressing me against the locker. “Because I’m not letting anything ruin our night.”

I smiled, raising an eyebrow. “Mhm? You have anything special planned?”

He leaned in to my car, so his breath would fan against the skin of my neck, making me shiver. “Just don’t forget to carry lipstick and concealer. You might need to redo your makeup by the end.”
