Christy nodded in understanding. “You should still keep your distance from him.”

“I will. He’s not here anyway.”

“He probably just needed a day off, it’s not like he isn’t coming back,” Zane said.

Christy frowned. “Hm. I don’t know. He showed up that day with wounds. Why wouldn’t he come today?”

She was right. I blinked, lowering my gaze.

Was something wrong?

“I’ll check in with the patrol,” Ajax said, already pulling out his phone.

“Do you have to?” I asked. “I mean, you really think something’s wrong?”

Ajax shrugged. “Wouldn’t hurt to be sure. He’s connected to you, after all. Right, Alpha?”

Zane nodded. “Talk to them. Just confirm if he’s home.”

I glanced at Zane. He met my gaze and gave me a reassuring smile. “Relax. It’s just protocol. I’m sure he’s at home daydreaming about winning you over with his books.”

“Yeah,” I said softly. “Yeah, he’s probably just trying for attention now.”

“Yep.”

The conversation changed after Ajax instructed Zane’s wolves to check out Blake’s house.

But for some reason, I kept waiting for them to call back.

My chest felt tight, like something was wrong, even though I didn’t know what.

-BLAKE’S POV-

I thought she was going to torture me, but all she did with the bolt cutters was snap the chains that bound me to the wall. I fell forward, groaning, stretching my arms and legs. The poisoned silver cuffs were still around my wrists and ankles, but at least they were no longer yanking me towards the wall.

I glared up at the girl.

“Come on, Blake,” she said, nudging me with her foot. “There’s some people who would like to meet you.”

“Who?” I asked. “Your superiors?”

She smiled. “There is no superior or inferior in The Order. Just angry and angrier.”

My brows twitched closer to each other. “Angry? With who?”

She gave me a distasteful look. “Your kind.”

I scoffed. “Humans and their entitled tantrums.”

She rolled her eyes. “Are you coming or do I have to drag you out?”

I slowly stood up, my head spinning at the movement. I took a staggering step forward, the cuffs digging harder into my skin, making me hiss. “At least take these off,” I said. “I can barely walk with them on.”

“Barely works, wolf. I’ve already done the least by unchaining you. Come on now, start walking.” She gestured towards the door.

“You go first, I’m following slowly.”

Without warning, she whipped the bolt cutter across my face, making me fall to my knees. Blood trickled down the side of my cheek, and a low growl erupted from my throat. She crouched down and grabbed my hair, pulling my head back to meet her gaze. But the moment our eyes met, she gasped, taking a startled step back.

“What the hell?” she whispered, her heart starting to pound.

A wave of energy swept through me, and I stood up, my jaw clenched.

She trembled now, backing away from me, her eyes rounded.

“Wh-why are your eyes red? That doesn’t happen. What are you?” she cried.

I felt the urge to rip her head off. Baring my teeth, I stepped towards her, but the door shot open, slamming against the wall.

“Stand down!” the man who entered yelled, pointing a gun al me. My kidnapper immediately hid behind him, breathing hard. “This is loaded with bullets that might not kill you, but will cause permanent damage. Recall your previous injuries and sit back down.”

My chest heaved up and down as I stared at him, and the barrel in my face. Did I want to risk it? It would be quite satisfactory even if I managed to kill one of them.

“We can give you what you want,” the girl said quickly, her voice shaking. It was nice to see genuine fear on her face this time.

“What is it you think I want?” I asked, my voice an unfamiliar growl.

“Lia Snow,” the man said, making me freeze. “We can give you Lia Snow if you cooperate with us. She can be yours, instead of Zane Adams’s.”

My ears perked up. I stared at them, considering.

Then my desire for my mate got the best of me.

“Speak.”

-LIA’S POV-

I squinted at the words on the page, trying to register what I was reading.

It wasn’t rocket science. Just simple laws of physics. But ordinary, natural things had stopped feeling important ever since I got involved with special, supernatural men.

I groaned, resting my face on the open book, putting my head down.

I used to be the school nerd. Being smart was my whole identity.

And now I barely recognised myself.

After all, it wasn’t just my life that had changed.

The effects of Zane Adams were evident even on my body-my fixed vision, the disappearance of ancient acne marks, and the healing of old scars on my knees. I liked blaming him for all of it, even though I knew the truth. I had always been something else. Something inhumane.

“There you are,” Zane’s voice came from a distance, and then footsteps approached me. The chair beside me scraped, and he sat down.

I didn’t lift my head. Didn’t acknowledge his presence.

“Lia?” he said, lightly ruffling my hair.

I groaned again, this time in response to him.

“What’s wrong?” He scooted closer to me, putting an arm around me. “Look at me.”

I shook my head against the book.

“Come on, love. Show me that pretty face.”

I made the most hideous face I could think of and glanced at him, making him burst out laughing.

“Goddess, Lia. You’re ridiculous.” The sound of his delighted laughter spread warmth inside me.

I cracked a small smile. “I’m failing. Everything.”

“Relax, darling. Everything will fall into place. Don’t worry,” he said in a soothing tone.

“That’s the problem.”

“What is?”

“You’re saying not to worry, but that’s the exact issue. I’m not worried. That’s what I’m worried about. Why don’t I care?”

Zane chuckled, gently pinching my check. “My love, don’t you have enough problems and concerns on your plate? Why do you want more?”

-LIA’S POV-

“I don’t want problems,” I muttered. “I want a bit of school stress.”

“Why on earth would you want that?”

‘Because… it feels normal.”

Zane took my chin, and leaned in, pressing his lips against mine. I closed my eyes and kissed him back, melting on the inside, my heart turning into mush.

He pulled away to stare at me. “What about this? How does this feel?”

I smiled. “Abnormal.”

Zane chuckled. “You remember how shitty normal was?”
