“Lia, what are you getting at?”
I bit my lip. “I don’t know, Zane. But… is it possible to turn someone without their knowledge? Did you… do something to me?”
“No,” he said instantly, “how can you even ask that? I would never do anything like that without your permission, Lia. I almost let you die because I did not want to make that choice for you.”
“Then what is happening to me?” I asked, my voice cracking. “If I’m not turning into a werewolf, why can I see the smallest insects on far away trees? That too, withouy my glasses. Why can I hear everything? How could I smell the stench of blood?”
Now I felt all of their eyes on me. Scrutinising gazes, even doubtful ones.
“Am I turning into something else? Did The Order do something to me? What is wrong with me?”
“Hey, shh,” Zane whispered, cupping my cheeks. “There is nothing wrong with you, alright? Don’t worry about it. I will figure it out.”
“Do you think I’m a werewolf?” I asked again.
“I’m not sure, Lia.”
“What do you mean?” I cried. “How can you not know?”
-LIA’S POV-
“Because,” he sighed, “you don’t smell different. You’re not healing as fast. You still have these scratches you got tonight. These are small cuts, if you were a werewolf, they would’ve healed within seconds. And the second you’d see me, you would be growling out ‘mine’, feeling the full effects of the mate bond. Because of the chance of having a human mate, we spend years training our minds to exercise control and restraint. To not force ourselves onto our mates the second we see them. Humans who turn into werewolves are all over their mates immediately. They often consummate the bond the moment they wake up. I don’t see you doing that.”
I turned my face to the side, closing my eyes.
Then what was going on?
“Listen to me,” Zane took my chin, forcing me to face him. “Whatever it is, we will figure it out, alright? Just don’t be worried. One step at a time.”
“Why is this happening to me?”
“I don’t know. But I’ll find out. And I will make sure that what happened tonight doesn’t happen again.”
“How?” I asked.
Zane pursed his lips. “There is a way, but I’m not sure you’ll agree to it. In fact, I think you’ll take offense.”
I scoffed. “Bring it on.”
“Zane, no,” Sheila muttered, looking at him like he was crazy.
“What else am I supposed to do?” he asked.
“Tell me,” I interrupted. “Let me decide for myself.”
“Okay, but don’t get mad, alright? There is no other way.”
“Go on.”
He released a breath. “I could get a tracker installed into your neck.”
I gaped. “What?”
“Hear me out. I thought of all other ways to track your location if something like this happens again. The people I had posted outside your house said they only saw a white light escape your window. It was gone in seconds. I think… I think that might be you. They saw no one enter your house, and no one leave. And you you said you woke up naked. Your clothes must’ve torn or evaporated. Your pendant is gone.” He touched my neck. “So no gadget or piece of jewellery will help. But if there is a chip inside you, that might actually work.”
“That’s crazy, Zane. She’s not an animal.”
“Except, she could be,” Zane snapped, making me flinch. Zane looked at me apologetically. “I am one too. We all are. We’re part animals, Lia. When wolves go rogue, they become rabid, sometimes we have to install a tracker into their bodies for their safety and for others’. I don’t care what you do to anyone else in this town. If you’re transitioing, somehow, I don’t care if you rip open the necks of every human or animal in your path. But I cannot afford you getting hurt. Like today. If I hadn’t heard you in time, or I’d been a second later, that boar would’ve killed you. I cannot risk that again. Please, Lia. Let me do this.”
I took a deep breath, closing my eyes. “Okay.”
“Okay?” He sounded surprise.
“Yeah. Screw it. I trust you.”
Zane pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Thank you. I promise you, I will not abuse that trust.”
I smiled at him, looking into his eyes. “I know.”
He pushed my hair away and leaned his forehead against mine, closing his eyes. “I am so glad you’re safe,” he whispered.
“It’s all thanks to you. At this point, I’ve lost count of the amount of times you’ve saved my life.”
He smiled. “I love you, Lia Snow.”
“I love you too, Zane.”
We reached home after a while, and Zane sneaked us into my bedroom, directly through the window. He placed me down, and I blinked a couple of times, the room spinning.
“You good?” he whispered, maintaining his arms around my waist.
“Yeah,” I said as I regained my balance and composure. “Thanks.”
“Let’s go clean you up.”
“No,” I said, placing my hand on his chest. “I can clean up. You wait here.”
He smiled. “Missed opportunity.”
I rolled my eyes, grinning.
“If that’s what you want, sure.” He shrugged.
I chuckled, and made my way into the washroom, closing and locking the door behind me, as though that would keep him out.
–
I glanced in the mirror, cringing at my mud-stained face and disheveled hair. How did he still kiss me while I looked like that? That boy must really love me.
Even given the circumstances, I still smiled at the thought.
I’d never thought I’d ever be loved this way.
Whatever was happening to me, everything that was going on, somehow felt worth it at the end of the day.
I was the girl blessed with Zane Adams. If I just made it out of all this alive, I’d be the luckiest girl on the planet.
I stepped under the shower and turned the taps, letting the warm water wash all the dirt away. I proceeded to shampoo my hair, and scrubbed off all the mud from my body. The cuts and scratches stung under the water, but I didn’t care. I couldn’t stay dirty, it was disgusting. And I was exhausted.
Once I was done, I put on my bathrobe, and tied a towel around my hair, before stepping out.
Zane was sprawled on my bed like it belonged to him, and his gaze met mine the second I exited the washroom.
-LIA’S POV-
His eyes went black instantly, and my heart gave a loud thump in my chest.
Zane quickly turned his face away and sat up, apologising.
“It’s not my fault,” he said. “I’m only human.”
“You mean you’re not,” I muttered, laughing nervously.
“Yeah, that. Whatever.”
I took a deep breath as he turned to me again, and slowly but purposefully climbed out of bed. He walked towards me, each step cautious, yet somehow predatory. My heart knocked against my ribs, my body suddenly feeling too exposed in the bathrobe. All he had to do was untie a knot. And everything would be on display before him. I curled my toes to force myself to hold my ground, even though my mind begged me to back away.
I had to stop being afraid. I had to stop being nervous.
I wanted to be confident when he touched me.
But Zane never did.
He stopped at a very short distance away, but where his body wouldn’t touch mine.
His eyes travelled down my body, but did not linger anywhere except my face.
He offered me a soft, genuine smile, instead of a smirk.
And somehow, all that made him much more desirable to me.
He had a beast inside him, begging him to touch me, to take me, to claim my body for himself.
And yet, he still respected me.
“How can you be so effortlessly beautiful?” he asked, staring at me intently. “Can I touch you, Lia?”
