“What about Blake?” Mom asked.
The question I’d been dreading.
“He is a nice boy, Lia. Why not him? I thought you were dating him.”
“We went out twice, Mom. The second time, things went really wrong. I will explain everything to you guys if you just calm down and give me a chance.”
Mom huffed. “Okay. Let’s go downstairs. But you, how did you get in her bedroom?” She glared at Zane.
Zane pursed his lips, then gestured towards the window.
“Delinquent,” Mom said, scowling.
“Sorry,” Zane muttered. “It won’t happen again.”
Hah. Liar.
“It better not,” Dad said.
“Come on. Downstairs,” Mom said ushering us out of my bedroom.
We made our way to the lounge and all sat down. Zane sat with my dad opposite to me and Mom.
We exchanged a glance, and I could tell he was still hung up on my very public confession.
“Start explaining,” Mom said.
I took a deep breath.
Here goes nothing.
-LIA’S POV-
I explained the situation to Mom and Dad as best as I could, leaving out all the supernatural bits, as well as the part where I almost died. Of course, Zane’s feelings and his sudden interest in me didn’t make much sense to them, but if I told them about the mate bond, the entire story would sound bullshit.
I wanted to tell them everything. I could even prove it all to them immediately.
But I didn’t know if they’d be able to digest so much new information in such a short span of time.
“Then today, I met Blake at school. He first apologised for running away that day. And then he tried to assault me.”
“What?” Mom said.
“What did he do?” Dad asked, his expression twisting into one of rage.
“He tried to… kiss my neck,” I said, glancing at Zane.
He blinked at me in reassurance.
“Ew,” Mom said. “What did you do?”
“I tried to scream, but he-uh-covered my mouth.”
“I am so sorry,” Mom whispered, taking my hands in hers.
Dad approached as well, kneeling on the ground in front of me.
“I’m fine,” I said. “Nothing happened. Zane and his friends hang out where we were, so they happened to find us. He saved me.” I glanced at Zane, smiling.
“Did you?” Mom looked at him.
“Of course,” Zane replied. “I will never let anyone harm her ever again.”
“Thank you,” Mom said, standing up and walking up to him. He quickly stood up as well. Mom took his hand. “Thank you for saving my daughter’s life. I thought you were a complete brat, but you’re actually a good guy.”
Zane grinned at her. “Both can be true, ma’am.”
Mom smiled. “I can see why Lia enjoys your company. You’re very self aware.”
Dad approached Zane too. “Thanks, son. I owe you one.”
“No, you don’t,” Zane frowned. “Please. Don’t say stuff like that. I only did what anyone should have, let alone someone who loves her.”
My cheeks tinged red as Mom turned to glance at me. I lowered my gaze. She seemed happy at my reaction.
“Join us for dinner tomorrow, Zane,” she said. “As a thank you.”
Zane clicked his tongue. “That is not necessary at all, ma’am. But I will not deny food.”
Mom laughed. “Good.”
“I should take my leave now,” he said. “I think you all need at moment of privacy, and I have somewhere to be.”
I stood up as well now, staring at him.
I was certain that ‘somewhere’ was my bedroom again.
“See you all tomorrow. Bye, Lia.”
“Bye,” I said, barely able to hold back my smile.
“You can walk him to his car,” Mom said.
I grinned. “Okay.”
Zane and I stepped out of the house together, and as soon we were a safe distance away, we stopped and faced each other.
“Are you going where I think you’re going?” I asked.
Zane leaned in, until our faces were only inches apart. “After that confession you made, do you think I have anywhere else to be?”
My cheeks heated up, and my heart started to pound. “I-I’m not gonna say it again.”
“Oh we’ll see,” he whispered. “Challenge accepted.”
“It’s not-” I laughed. “It’s not a challenge.”
Zane pressed a kiss to my cheek, sending shivers through my body. “See you upstairs.” He walked around to the side of the house, making sure my parents weren’t looking.
I hurried back inside.
“Look at the blush on her face,” Mom exclaimed, grinning.
“Mom, stop.” I laughed.
Dad walked up to me, and pulled me into a huge hug. He kissed. my head. “I am sorry for what happened today, sweetheart. I will kill him if he shows up here again.”
“He won’t,” I reassured. “Zane told him the same thing and he ran for his life.”
Dad gave me a tight lipped smile. “That’s good. But Lia, be careful. I wouldn’t place all my trust in Zane yel.”
I took Dad’s hands. “Don’t worry. I am careful, Dad. I won’t let anyone hurt me, I promise.”
Dad nodded, ruffling my hair. “I can’t believe you’re growing up so fast.”
I smiled. “I’m still a kid.”
“You are,” he nodded, “don’t let him your bedroom again.”
I laughed, lowering my gaze.
“Quit bullying my daughter,” Mom said, approaching us and pulling me to herself. “She’s sixteen. It is her age to have adventures.”
“Letting boys into her bedroom isn’t an adventure.”
“You spent the night in mine every other day, Dave.”
Dad scowled. “That was different.”
“Was it?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.
Dad sighed. “Don’t blame me if I show up with my hunting gun this time.”
“Alright, Dad. Relax. He won’t be in my bedroom,” I said.
Zane pinned me against the door as soon as I entered the room. He locked it, not breaking eye contact for a single second.
