“You’re not my Alpha,” I pointed out.

“I will be, when I mark you.”

“Mark me?”

“The thing you wanted me to do and I didn’t.”

I touched my neck. “That?”

“Yeah.”

“What was that?” I asked. “Why did I… why did I want you to bite me?”

“Our closeness, our kiss stirred some emotions inside you.”

“No, it wasn’t just emotions. My neck was literally pulsing here.” I touched the exact spot on my neck to show him.

“I know, I could see. Just the effects of the bond, love. Don’t worry about it.’

“What would happen if you bit me? Would I turn into a werewolf?”

Zane laughed. “No, it’s a little more complicated than that.”

“What is?”

“Turning someone into a werewolf.”

“How do you do it?”

“I’ll tell you some other time.”

“Then tell me what would happen if you marked me.”

“So you’re supposed to bite the human you want to turn and then kill them. If they wake up, they’re a werewolf.”

My eyes widened. “And if they don’t?”

“Then they’re… dead.”

“Who would take that risk?”

“People who are dying.”

My shoulders dropped. “Yeah. Makes sense.”

Zane nodded, pursing his lips.

“But that’s not what I asked you.”

Zane stood up now. “Some other time, Lia. You need to rest now.” He turned to leave the room, but I quickly caught his hand.

“No, I can’t stay.”

“Lia, I thought this discussion was over.”

“It is. I am going home.”

Zane huffed, clearly getting worked up now. “Love, you’re really testing my patience right now. We need to keep you under observation to make sure everything is fine inside your body, and we have to ensure your safety. What is so hard to understand about that?”

I opened my mouth to argue, but Zane swiftly approached me, grabbing me by the back of my neck. “You try to argue and I will kiss you.”

I sucked in a breath, staring at him dumbfounded.

He smirked. “Good girl.”

I placed my hand over lips. “You can come with me,” I said.

“You think I cannot remove your hand, love?”

“I said you can come with me.”

“Come where?”

“Home,” I replied.

“Like your parents will let me in,” he said, letting go of me. “In fact, your mom will be certain I’m the one who hurt you.”

“They won’t. But that has never stopped you before, has it?”

Now Zane seemed to be getting convinced. “What are you getting at?”

“You take me home, I go inside acting completely normal. Tell them I had a wonderful night with Blake, but that I’m very tired and go straight to bed. You’re already waiting there for me. And… you stay the night to make sure I’m safe and breathing.”

Zane’s lips slowly curled into a smile. “If you wanted to spend the night with me, my Little Lia, all you had to do was ask.”

I rolled my eyes.

“You didn’t need to create a whole fuss about it,” he chuckled, teasing.

“Ha-ha Zane, so funny. Lia is dying to sleep with you.”

He only smiled wider like an idiot. “Are you? That can be arranged.”

I shot him a look.

“Alright.” He said with annoyance. “You’re no fun.”

“Take me home now,” I demanded.

“Fine. Let’s go.”

-LIA’S POV-

Zane took my hand and helped me get to my feet.

“Can you walk?” he asked. “Want me to carry you?”

“No, no. I’m fine,” I assured him.

“Okay. Careful.”

He led me outside the room, placing his free hand on my waist. I found myself gazing at him, observing the look of concern on his face as he watched my steps, making sure I wouldn’t trip over something, making sure I was walking steadily. We walked through the corridor towards the staircase, when a gorgeous young woman was ascending it.

“Luna,” she whispered when she saw me, and immediately sank to her knees.

I froze.

“Emerald, please stand,” Zane said.

She obliged, beaming at me.

“Lia, this is Emerald, the girl who saved your life. She is our pack’s doctor.”

I smiled back at her. “Thank you, Emerald.”

“You don’t need to thank me, Luna. What I did was my duty.”

I didn’t know what to say.

“Alpha,” she said, “forgive me, but she should be resting.”

Zane smiled sarcastically. “I’m aware, Emerald. Explain that to her.”

She frowned at me.

“I need to go home,” I said.

“Home?” Emerald frowned. “Is that safe?”

“Yes, I’m going with her.”

“Oh,” she relaxed, “then there’s nothing to worry about. Alpha will not let any harm come to you.”

Warmth spread in my chest.

“Let’s go, now,” Zane said. “Come here.”
