“He is!” she replied.
“Then why is he biting her?” I asked absentmindedly.
The Hounds entered the cafeteria, and immediately, my heart. skipped a beat.
I quickly returned my attention to Blake and Christy, my stomach twisting with a mix of unease and excitement.
“Because werewolves bite,” Christy said.
“Isn’t that a vampire thing?” I asked softly, trying to keep my eyes on her. I could not afford to glance at The Hounds again. I had to avoid eye contact with Zane.
“Vampires do that to drink blood. Werewolves do that to claim their mates.”
“Their sexual partners?”
“Their soulmates.” Christy rolled her eyes.
“Right,” I muttered.
“It sounds romantic, doesn’t it, Lia?” Blake asked, resting his chin on his fist, his elbow on the table.
I met his gaze, and heat crept up my cheeks. “Yeah, I guess?”
“It does?” Christy asked. “You sounded like you hate the idea.”
I shrugged. “It depends, I mean, does it hurt?”
“No,” Blake said at once. “It doesn’t if it’s done properly and with both of them consenting to it.”
Christy and I frowned. “How would you know that?” she asked him. “Have werewolves marked you before?” She laughed.
Blake’s eyes did not move from me for even a second.
“Maybe.” He smirked. “Maybe Lia is one.”
Christy gasped, while my cheeks flamed.
“You bit him?”
“No, I didn’t!”
“Liar! Tell me, Lia. Have you two done the dirty yet?”
“God, no,” I cried, scowling at her, and then at Blake. “Blake!”
He laughed, shaking his head. “I meant that she’s claimed me as hers. She’s marked my soul with her love.”
Christy deflated. “Boring. I thought things were about to get interesting.”
“They are,” a voice declared, making me freeze.
I glanced at Blake, and then at Christy, their expressions filled with disdain.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to look at him.
He was staring down at me already, and he smiled when our eyes locked.
“Zane,” I acknowledged.
“Lia.”
I waited.
“What do you want?” Blake snapped, standing up from his chair.
I pursed my lips, standing up as well. “Wait,” I said, placing my hand on his chest. I glanced at Zane. “What do you want?”
“I thought it was clear last night, love.”
Now heads began to turn to us, the people nearby who could hear what he said starting to whisper.
“Last night?” Blake frowned.
“Yes, last night. Right after you left,” Zane replied.
Gasps erupted around us.
My eyes widened. Why would he say that?
“What is he talking about, Lia?” Blake asked, grabbing my arm. His hold was harder than I expected, and I winced.
“Let go of her,” Zane said immediately, stepping closer to us.
“Stay back,” Blake snapped. “This is between the two of us. Lia, what is he talking about?”
-LIA’S POV-
Zane did not budge. He stepped even closer and grabbed Blake’s wrist, forcing his hand off of me. I stepped away from both of them, rubbing my arm. I was certain Blake’s hold had left a mark. My arm was throbbing with pain.
“Why can’t you just stay away from her?” Blake snapped, giving Zane a shove.
I gasped, covering my mouth.
Zane walked up to him again, staring him down. For a split second, I thought I saw his eyes turn black. Maybe the light was odd.
“You stay away from her, Walker. And I swear by the Goddess, if I see you lay a hand on her ever again, I will rip it off.”
A shiver crawled through me.
Suddenly I realised what an idiot I’d been by asking Zane to announce our meetings to the world. I should’ve let them remain a secret. I should’ve known what would happen if Blake found out. And yet, I acted on my stupid feelings.
“You think I’m the one who’s hurting her?” Blake asked. “It’s you. Not me.”
“I would never hurt Lia.”
“What about your little pack? The Hounds as you call them? They’ve hurt her plenty, Zane, while you’ve watched. You think she’s ever gonna be able to forgive you? You think she can ever move past that?”
“She already has,” he replied. “Haven’t you, Lia?” He glanced at me. “Once I promised you that my friends won’t hurt you ever again, once I apologised to you for all the torment they put you through, did you not forgive it?”
I opened my mouth to respond, then closed it.
“You think she’s stupid enough to fall for this trap, Zane?” Blake laughed. “You think she can’t see through your lies and your drama?”
“I think it’s clear who the dramatic one is, Blake. It’s you who throws hands every chance he gets.”
They weren’t even giving me a chance to speak.
“So you expect me to stand by and watch you manipulate her? Not happening, Adams.”
“That’s how stupid you think Lia is? I’m afraid you don’t know who you’re dealing with. Not your fault, obviously. You have known her for a few days, whilst the two of us have grown up

“You think the amount of time you spend with a person matters?” Blake scoffed.
“It absolutely does, for human beings. Not for animals like you. who do not know how delicate a girl is,” Zane retorted..
I resisted the urge to scream.
“You think Lia is delicate?” Blake asked. “Ask your friend who got punched by her.”
