James frowned.

What nonsense was Ashton babbling now? When had he ever lied to Lily?

At most, he lied in bed.

When she begged him to stop kissing her, he had soothed her, said, “just a little longer”-but of course, he never stopped.

But Ashton couldn’t possibly know about that.

Seeing his boss’s silence, Ashton thought he was dodging the truth. Afraid James was still secretly tangled up with that fop, Ashton pressed on.

“Boss, in the car just now, you told Ms. Ginger you’d never kissed anyone else.”

“But… but I saw it myself. You kissed someone before-a man.”

“Boss, you’ve really cut ties with him, right? He won’t come making trouble? Ms. Ginger-“

James finally understood.

His handsome face went so dark it seemed ready to drip ink.

Kissed a man? Him?

The only person he had kissed was his soft, sweet Lily!

He hated explaining himself, but the thought of Ashton spouting nonsense in front of Lily, making her doubt him-it left him no choice.

“I don’t like men,” he said flatly.

“I’ve never kissed a man. I never will.”

Ashton didn’t dare argue, but his eyes still held disbelief.

If his boss didn’t like men, why had he spent half a day in a tent with that fop?

James’s jaw clenched tighter. His voice dropped even lower. “Lily and I were once online friends, drawn together by our shared views. But she thought I despised her.”

“When we agreed to meet, she disguised herself as a man to cut ties completely.”

“Leilan-that ‘fop’-was Lily.”

“And don’t you dare breathe a word of this outside. Especially not to her.”

The fop… was Ms. Ginger?

Ashton nearly yelped.

God! He’d even insulted that disguise in front of her before…

…

Hopefully she was magnanimous enough not to hold it against him.

Thinking back to all the times he had mocked that “fop” around her, guilt made him shrink into his collar.

But knowing now that his boss had always loved Ms. Ginger-and only her-filled him with relief.

At least his boss hadn’t deceived her. At least there was no chance she’d run away with the baby, leaving him lonely again.

Upstairs, Lily had locked herself in the bathroom like she was warding off a wolf. James could only shower in a guest room.

When he came back, she was just stepping out of the bathroom.

The sight of her hit him like a thunderclap. His breath caught, heat surging through his veins until his body felt like it might explode.

She wore a wine-red silk camisole nightdress.

The cut was daring, the neckline low.

From his angle, every curve was laid bare, impossible to ignore.

Her pale, delicate skin, her graceful figure-draped in that sultry slip, she radiated a dangerous allure. Like a temptress newly stepped into the mortal world, ready to strip his soul away.

His gaze burned, seared, devoured.

Lily had only chosen the dress at random from the wardrobe before her bath.

But standing before the mirror, she had realized it revealed too much-especially her chest, more prominent than before. The effect was almost indecent.

But when Lily met James’s dark, smoldering gaze, she couldn’t help thinking his reaction was a little over the top.

Her face burned under the weight of his stare. Flustered, she tried to divert his attention.

“James, how did you manage to find Winston and Jennie so quickly, and convince them to testify against Elsa?”

“I had people keeping tabs on Elsa,” he answered curtly. “As for Winston and Jennie-everyone has weaknesses. You just need to know where to press.”

Lily nodded knowingly, then pressed on, still trying to keep him from staring holes through her. “So Marilyn really was involved in this? She and Elsa…”

But James had already used every ounce of self-control just to answer her first question.

Now, with desire surging and reason collapsing, he couldn’t even hear her words anymore.

All he could see was her-every line of her body luring him closer, pulling him under.

“James? Why are you looking at me like that? Do I have something on me? You-mmph-“

Before she could finish, he had swept her into his arms, one hand clamped around her slender waist, the other sliding across her back, melting her resistance until she was soft as water.

She had wanted to ask more questions, to get him to be serious.

But the moment she opened her lips, his mouth was already on hers, burning her like fire.

“Lily, we agreed in the car. That kiss didn’t count. You owe me another when we got back.”

His kisses rained down, fierce and unrelenting.

It was like drowning in a vast ocean, her lungs filling with heat, his hoarse, desire-laden voice the only thing that reached her ears.

She wanted to cry.

When had she ever agreed to that? She was exhausted, all she wanted was sleep.

But she knew him-if she didn’t kiss him, he wouldn’t let her rest.

And truthfully… she did like his kisses, liked the way he tangled her up in him. So she yielded, kissing him back.

She thought her response would satisfy him, calm him, let them sleep.

But the moment she kissed back, he only deepened it, his hand supporting her waist, worshiping every inch of her, as if he meant to consume her whole.

James always woke early.

At first light, his eyes opened-and he realized something soft was draped across him.

He looked down and saw Lily, curled against him like a kitten. She held him tightly, face nestled into his chest, one leg hooked loosely around his waist.

Her nightdress had ridden up in her restless sleep, baring smooth, pale legs pressed close against him.

The contrast of deep wine-red silk and luminous white skin made his breath quicken, his body strain with heat.

Panic flickered through him. He turned his face sharply aside, refusing to look.

He was going to be a father soon-twins, no less. His heart thrilled at the thought.

But her pregnancy was also a torment. He could look, he could kiss, he could taste-but he couldn’t go further.
