James’s eyes turned cold in an instant.

Lily had told him before that she’d only brushed Simon’s lips by accident. That nonsense about her stealing his first kiss was nothing but his own sick fantasy.

And the claim that she had spied on him in the bathroom? Ridiculous.

He knew Lily had no interest in Simon.

But he also knew, as a man, that Simon had feelings for her.

And when another man set his sights on the woman he loved, the sour sting in his chest was unbearable.

His voice came out hard and cold. “Lily’s my girlfriend. Once she agrees, I’ll marry her again. From now on, stay away from her. She’ll never go on a blind date with you again.”

“James!”

Hearing that, Simon’s heart twisted.

He gripped the car window with white knuckles, refusing to let James drive off. “You’re the one who pushed me to meet Lily in the first place. You-“

“I regret it.”

James cut him off flatly. “And because of that, I won’t let anything happen that could take her away from me again.”

“Let go!”

Simon had admired his brilliant cousin his entire life. He had always obeyed him.

But right now, he couldn’t release his grip.

It felt as though if he let go, something vital would vanish from his life forever.

He didn’t understand it himself.

By all accounts, he should despise Lily-especially with the way she and Elsa clashed.

Yet even after knowing she was carrying James’s child, he had still agreed to that blind date.

“James, you were the one who wanted to divorce her, you-

“Simon, your head really is full of mush!”

Lily was exhausted. All she wanted was a bath and her bed. Instead, Simon blocked her path. No way was she going to treat him nicely.

She thought he had completely lost it.

He yelled at her, he’d even once had his hands around her throat, swearing he hated her enough to tear her apart. And now he wanted to date her?

It was insane.

The more she thought about it, the more disgusted she became. Not even for Mary’s sake was she willing to show him respect. “Since I’m going to be your future cousin-in-law, let me give you some advice-go get your head checked! I already have the man I love. Why would I go on a blind date with you? I don’t go for blind fools or brainless idiots. You, Elsa, and John are a perfect match. The three of you should live your own lives and stop making everyone else miserable. Honestly, seeing you is nothing but bad luck.”

Simon froze again.

She called him insane, brainless, and told him to go live with John and Elsa.

Every word was like a slap.

And yet, staring at her bold, fiery expression, he didn’t feel angry.

Instead, his gaze fell on her lips, and he couldn’t help but remember that sudden collision, the kiss that had haunted him ever since.

“Lunatic!”

Lily glared at him with pure disgust.

James had still been brooding, but the moment he heard her call him her beloved boyfriend, every trace of jealousy in his chest melted into sweetness.

He had to hold back the smile tugging at his lips.

Seeing Simon standing there like a lost soul, James forcefully pried his hand off the window, slammed down the gas, and sped away in a cloud of dust.

“James…”

Dust-stung Simon’s face, jolting him back to himself.

Lily’s red lips were gone from sight.

But they were etched deep into his mind.

It was pathetic, laughable-the lips of the woman he hated most had become his obsession.

He staggered forward a few steps, reaching into empty air as though trying to grab hold of something.

But his palm closed on nothing. Under the streetlight, only dust floated in the air.

“James, everyone else is normal, but Simon’s brain really is like it got smashed in a doorway.”

Lily was fuming, venting to James without holding back.

“He and I are like fire and water. Meeting without tearing each other apart is already a restraint. With a relationship like that, how could we possibly go on a date? He’s out of his mind!”

James wasn’t talkative, and he preferred peace.

But ever since he had Lily, he loved listening to her voice.

Even when she was cursing someone, the sound was sweet to his ears.

Warmth filled his eyes, and his voice softened with tenderness. “Yeah, maybe Simon really did get his head smashed when he was little. I must have been crazy too, letting you two meet. Lily, I won’t ever make that mistake again. From now on, we’ll always be together.”

Lily couldn’t help thinking back on all the misunderstandings she and James had once shared.

He thought she had feelings for someone else. She thought he couldn’t accept women at all.

Tiptoeing around cach other, second-guessing every word-both of them had been so ridiculously cautious.

Looking back on those foolish days, she laughed softly. “We really were stupid before. Luckily, we didn’t miss our chance with each other.”

“James, our family will always be together.”

“Yeah.”

His gaze followed her hand as it gently caressed her stomach, tenderness in his eyes so deep it was almost drowning.

More than anything, he wanted to kiss her.

But Ashton had already gone home, leaving him to drive. Kissing her behind the wheel would be reckless, and he forced himself to wait. The moment they were back in their own little home, he planned to make up for it-twice over.

“Lily!”

As his car turned onto the street where his villa was, John suddenly rushed out of nowhere and blocked the road.

The warmth drained from James’s eyes, replaced with a stormy darkness.

He couldn’t run him over, though he would’ve liked to. Scowling, he slammed the brakes.

Lily jolted in her seat. Having someone appear out of nowhere in front of the car was terrifying.

When she saw it was John, her fear twisted instantly into fury.

If she’d had anything in her hands-like a bucket of slop-she would have gladly thrown it straight into his face,

“Get lost!”

Patting her chest to steady her breath, she snapped, “John, I told you-I don’t ever want to deal with you again. So do us all a favor and disappear!”

“Lily…”
