I leave the trees, and we proceed to the next group. If their conversations are just as bad as the ones we just heard, they will die as well.
The office building is in the heart of the pack. We need to time our power outage perfectly. I mind-link Tyler to cut the power as we watch the street lights go off. Yes, shifter sight provides night vision, but only to a point. The power outage will be the distraction we need, along with Cyrus.
As soon as the power is out, I mind-link Cyrus to find a place to cause a distraction as Damon and I advance to the back of the building. We could try to do this without distraction, but my instincts suggest that escaping will not be as easy as entering without a diversion.
So I trust the instincts, just as I trust my boys.
Damon and I moved swiftly as we approached the building’s fire escape, blending seamlessly into the night. Damon led with fluid, purposeful movements that showcased his strength and agility due to years of training, enabling him to maneuver easily between the rungs with calculated efficiency in every motion.
As we reached the rooftop, the metal creaked slightly under our weight, but we pressed on, undeterred. With a quick nod exchanged, Damon pushed open the rooftop door, and they slipped into the darkened interior, adrenaline coursing through their veins, ready to execute their mission with precision and stealth.
Apple, Tree
We listen carefully and walk silently down to the third floor via the stairwell. Cyrus mind-links that he strapped C4 to the ‘dick’ of some statue of Sonne somewhere, and I inform him of our current situation and order his return to keep a lookout.
I mind-linked with Tyler to restore the power, hoping it would appear as a natural power grid issue while we stood outside Alpha Sonne’s office. I hear only one heartbeat, and I doubt from the liquor I smell that he is unaware of the threat outside his office door.
“He remains in his chair. About twelve feet from the door. Alone and no weapon within reach.” Tyler mind-links as he cuts the power again. Damon turns the handle gently as we hear Alpha Sonne cursing again.
Once the door is cracked open, we bolt in and fire three tranquilizer darts into Sonne’s chest.
He groans and quickly slumps face-first against his desk. I mind-link Cyrus and Tyler, giving them an update as Damon watches my back.
Tyler turns the power back on as I grab Sonne and throw him over my shoulder. Damon closes and locks the door due to hearing footsteps down the hall.
Sombody knocks on the door as I mentally instruct Cyrus to detonate the statue. The explosion is loud and shakes the building we are in. I can see the flames from across the pack as the shifter behind the door yells and runs away.
The pack is distracted and disoriented. Tyler cuts the power again, this time for hopefully the 30-40 minutes we need to get Sonne out the front door of the office building.
We meet up with Cyrus behind the building, and the three of us take turns carrying Sonne through the forest. The power outage gave us the time we needed, and the border patrol has been pulled into the pack to look for their missing Alpha.
“You’re a pussy. Sonne is only six feet tall, and you are already winded. You’ve missed too many days of training.” Cyrus starts to annoy Damon out of boredom for the walk back to Tyler and the SUV, I presume.
“I have been busy getting to know my mate, and if I remember correctly, your stupid ass had to get suspended for nearly a month to get your mate bond sealed.” Damon retorts, and I sigh loudly.
Here we go.
“That is because my mate is a psychopath with trust issues. Yours seems normal. Just stick a fang in her and then hope she doesn’t care that you have a small dick.” Cyrus smirks in the dark, enjoying himself.
Apple, Tree
“There is nothing small about me.” Damon continues to carry Sonne without any difficulty noted. Missing training has done nothing physically to him, but I am concerned about him emotionally now that he has a mate. He has become quieter. Maybe guarded. I haven’t put my finger on it yet.
“That’s not what I heard.” Cyrus taunts.
“Your sister is angry because I told her she had oversized meat curtains. You cannot believe all that you hear, Cyrus.”
“I told you not to fucking talk about my sister.”
“You don’t have a sister, Cyrus!” I growl as I interlock my fingers and put my hands on top of my head, pushing down in hopes that it will fix the headache that these two are starting.
“We don’t know that Thane. My mom was a slut.”
“Apple, tree,” Damon says as he dumps Sonne on the ground. I fire another dart into him as Tyler starts the SUV.
Raven
“This is the most pathetic shit I have ever seen in my life. How are you going to get the lid off your pickle jar if you’re not strong enough to throw a decent punch? Where are your muscles?” Watching Ayla throw punches against the shifter mannequin would be amusing if she weren’t the Luna. Her title makes her punches frightening because she will always be a target.
“My muscles are driving back here as we speak!” Ayla huffs, shaking her hand out.
“You have to stop trying to tuck your thumb. Throw your weight into your hip and shoulder.
Stagger your legs. You do not want to be unbalanced when you get hit.”
“What about me?” Amani asks.
“You aren’t that bad.” Truthfully, she seems scrappy.
“Thanks, I grew up on the streets and I had…”
“Don’t. If you haven’t shared this with your mate, I don’t want to hear it. Telling your mate your history does something for the fates. Rainbows and unicorns or whatever Cyrus says.” I explain, rolling my eyes at the memories from my ceremony night of how it officially made me turn my heart over to Cyrus.
How sappy.
“Hello, I’m here to report for duty.” A tall, lean shifter approaches.
“Who are you?” I grumble, not wanting to add to the list of marshmallows I am trying to toughen up.
“Cyrus said that I am supposed to let you kick my ass, but I did not realize one of you would be the Luna, and now I am very uncomfortable.” He swallows hard and bows toward Ayla, who still looks uncomfortable by the gesture, as shown by her facial expression.
“Fine. As you can see, your new opponent is quite a bit taller than you, as is much of the world…”
“Hey, that isn’t true.” Ayla interrupts.
“You have to stand on the counter to get into the top cupboards now, hush.” I remind her. “He is quite tall, so the goal for you would be to get enough strength to climb him like a tree or…
Don’t Forget to Cut It Off.
“Thane says I have climbed him before,” Ayla interjects.
“Yes, in lust, crazed horny mode, not survival mode, now listen.”
“I am getting more uncomfortable.” The no-name shifter says, like I care.
“Since you will not be able to climb him, I recommend the eyes, throat, and groin method. 1 point to each body part on the stranger before me.
“Poke him in the eyes, stab him with our fingers in the throat, and kick him in the groin. I’ve used this before.” Amani says, sitting up more with excitement in her voice.
