“How’d you know that idiot?” Tyson teases, glancing over at Knox. I can’t help but smirk. I like this guy. I approve, Sam. I approve.

“Well, he’s best friends with my younger brother-“

“Wait, you’re from New York?” Tyson interrupts, his eyes widening. Sam nods shyly, meeting his gaze once more.

“Dude, aren’t you dating someone?” one of the other players chimes in, earning a glare from Tyson.

“No, I ended that. It was nothing serious.”

“Alright, alright, boys! Less flirting, more running. Come on, back to work! Sorry, ladies, we’re on a tight schedule,” the coach interrupts, blowing his whistle. The players scramble to retrieve their helmets.

“Are you single?” The same player who questioned Tyson earlier now turns his attention to me, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Jason, drills… Now!” Knox roars at him, shooting me a glare. I return it with equal intensity.

“Asshole,” I mutter under my breath.

“Geez, I think someone’s on her period,” he retorts, referring to Knox, who is now storming over to him.

“Shit! Gotta go, ladies, bye!” Jason picks up speed, sprinting back to the center of the field. We can’t help but laugh at his antics.

“So… um… do you have a… boyfriend?” Tyson stutters, turning his attention back to my sister. We all watch with amusement as she shakes her head no.

Seeing his face light up with a smile, he continues, “Would you… um-“

“Miller! Get your ass running! Now!” The coach interrupts him. Tyson’s head snaps in his direction, spotting the man with a cap on his head waving him over to the rest of the guys.

“Be right there, coach! Give me a sec??@

“Miller! Fucking run or I’ll make you!”

“Coach, I’m pouring my heart out here! Jesus!”

“Fucking spill it, Miller! I don’t have all day.”

“Alright, alright! Would you like-” Tyson turns back to face my sister, who is clearly amused by all of this.

“Faster, Miller! My wife is making lasagna tonight and you know how much I like my lasagna and how angry Jen gets when I’m not home at seven sharp!”

“Ugh! I’m sorry about him-“

“You will be running thirty more suicides by yourself if you’re not over here in the next thirty seconds, Miller!” The coach continues, making us laugh at the sitcom unfolding across the field.

“I’ll take it! Just give me a minute-” Tyson bellows back at his coach. He turns back to Sam once more. I feel bad for him; the coach isn’t cutting him any slack. But he’s momentarily distracted by another player, giving Tyson a brief reprieve.

“Okay, before I physically get dragged away from you. Can I take you out sometime? If that’s cool with you?” Sam’s eyes widen, and she looks at me, her mouth opening and closing rapidly like a goldfish.

“Me? L-Like a d-date? Really?” She points to herself, making Tyson laugh.

“Yeah, like a date. Would you want to-

“Yes! I mean, sure. That sounds cool!” Her tone is more relaxed now, trying to mask her excitement.

That’s how they met. When Tyson first came to pick her up from our house, he was greeted with five hard stares from my brothers and Knox’s older ones.

Knox knew Tyson was a good guy, and he knew he would treat Sam well. Since then, they’ve been together. It hasn’t been smooth sailing, but they’re stronger than ever now.

“I’ve got you, babe. Maybe we should lie down upstairs for a while. You barely got any sleep last night.” Tyson suggests, cradling Sam in his arms. She nods weakly into his neck.

“Join the club,” I mumble, watching Tyson’s back as he carries Sam away. He smiles over at my mom before disappearing out the door.

“Miranda, there’s a spare room upstairs if you want to rest until she wakes back up. It’s the very last door on the left,” my mom offers.

Miranda tidies up the papers spread out around the table and places them back into her folder neatly. She takes my mom’s offer and makes her way upstairs, leaving my mom and me alone in the kitchen.

My mom sits at the table opposite me, sliding an omelet and a mug of coffee across to me. I need the caffeine, even though I’m not a huge fan of the taste. It keeps me awake.

As I eat my omelet, I realize I don’t eat as much anymore. I fill up faster than usual. So, effectively, I’ve lost weight. I’m not complaining, but it hasn’t been over a long period of time.

I look like a mess.

“What happened?” My mom’s fingers toyed with the handle of her mug as she fixed her gaze on me. Despite getting some rest, she looked worn out today.

She’d been helping Sam a lot more than me lately, and Sam was being incredibly understanding about it all.

I continued to slice my omelet, forking it into my mouth and swallowing hard.

“You saw it. Everyone did-“

“Not that, Alex. What happened with you and Knox?”

“Nothing,” I grumbled, repeating my motions. I took a sip of my coffee, wincing at the strength of it.

Just what I needed.

“Alex, you can talk to me. I’m your mom, I’ll always support you.”

“Mom, seriously, it’s nothing. I found out he didn’t like me.”

“What do you mean you found out he didn’t like you? Of course, he likes you, baby!” She whispered across the table, pushing the newspaper out of her way as if it was an obstacle.

“He doesn’t, Mom. He didn’t. Let’s drop it. I don’t want to-“
