Although, I’d seen the evidence of his circulatory system first hand, so really, it shouldn’t have been that much of a surprise.”Fuck,” I finally panted, staring up at him.

He gave me a knowing smile and finally eased out, pulling me into his arms as he rolled onto his side. “You’re quite profane for someone so sheltered.””You sound like my tutors,” I shot back.

He stroked a strand of damp hair behind my ear, studying me as thoughtfully as he had before. The desire hadn’t gone anywhere, even though he looked deceptively human once more, his eyes back to their dark shade of red. “I suppose you could consider me that. How would you rate this evening’s lesson?”

My face flamed hot again, and I gave him a playful shove before propping myself up on one elbow. “There is something I need to know, considering there wasn’t a whole lot of planning that went into this…””Oh?” he asked patiently.”I’m…not on birth control.”

It wasn’t really a question, but he pieced it together easily enough and chuckled. “There’s no need to worry about that. Shifters and vampires don’t mix.” He paused. “Well, not genetically. And we can’t transmit human diseases, either.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. “I figured you were like shifters in that regard, but the pregnancy thing…yeah, that’s a relief.””A vampire-werewolf hybrid would be quite a creature to behold, though,” he mused. “One I imagine would draw a good deal of attention, positive and otherwise.””Hybrids can’t be that rare if I exist,” I said with a sigh.”I don’t know about that,” Alexander said, looking at me with a curious gleam in his eyes. “I’ve never met anyone quite like you, and that’s saying something.””Should I be offended?” I half-teased.

Alexander smiled and pulled me back into his arms, rolling so I was beneath him. “I thought that was obvious enough. But if you’d like me to make it clearer…”

I pretended to pause to think about it. “I’m pretty sure I’m out of heat, but I guess it couldn’t hurt to make sure.””It would be the responsible thing to do,” he agreed in the deadpan humor I was getting used to.

I laughed as he nuzzled my neck again, the scruff of his five o’clock shadow tickling my bare skin. “And if the other nobles learn you’ve so generously lent your services to a common shifter?””The other nobles can mind their own damn business,” he said, kissing the spot his fangs had just pierced. The wound had healed already, which had to be a vampire thing. Convenient. “And there’s nothing common about you, pet.”

The affectionate name made my heart all fluttery again. My head was already chastising her, but after all the shit I’d been through, I decided I deserved to enjoy this one moment.

Alexander grew serious as he looked back at me. “You know, this doesn’t have to be a one-time thing. My earlier offer still stands. You can come back here each full moon until we figure this out. I can keep compelling the sickness away, and if all else fails, I can keep you entertained.”

After everything we’d done, I still blushed at that. “I’m sure you could. I’ll…think about it.”

He frowned slightly, looking at me like I’d just spoken in Greek.

Actually, he was probably far more fluent in Greek than he was with the word no.”You’re not used to hearing maybes, are you?” I asked dryly.”Not at all,” he said without a hint of shame. A look of mischief that was far too appealing crossed his face, and he brushed his fingers across the curve of my jaw as if he’d gotten a doctorate in making me melt inside. “But the full moon isn’t over yet, and I’m willing to bet I can turn that maybe into a yes.”

I laughed until he silenced me with a kiss, and I was pulled back beneath the current of lust that threatened to sweep me away altogether. I had to admit, he was probably right about that.

Being at home felt good, but in some ways, I found myself missing the castle. Or maybe it was just Alexander. The one thought was more concerning than the other, even if they were equally irrational.

I didn’t even know the guy. The night we had shared didn’t change that.

The bar was even busier than usual that night, and Sam was off dealing with something she wouldn’t go into detail about. I knew better than to press her. Cole was actually around somewhere, but I hadn’t actually seen him so much as his flashy yellow sports car that was parked out back. Not that he would’ve done anything to help even if he was sitting right at the bar.

So far, I had a handle on things. It helped that the regulars were patient, and I had memorized their orders. Eventually, I got into the swing of it, and I was just about to let myself take a breather once the crowd had slowed when the last person in the world I wanted to see walked through those doors.

Time seemed to stand still as a man who belonged to another reality stood before me. Liam looked dapper as ever in a dark blazer with his red hair pulled back at the nape of his neck. I wasn’t the only one who noticed the moment he entered. The other shifters glanced his way, and I could feel the energy in the room change.
