Why did he have to be so damn sweet? I already felt inadequate enough to be their mate with all this. Now I couldn’t even shift?

The goddess might have chosen the three of them for some greater purpose, but I was pretty sure she’d made a mistake where I was concerned.

* * *

As the morning light streamed in through my windows, I rolled over and pulled the blankets over my head, refusing to meet the day just yet. Last night had been bad enough.

Once I’d gotten back to my room, I had made a few hours’ worth of ill-fated attempts to shift, thinking maybe it was the pressure after all.

Did my wolf have performance anxiety? Seemed about right. So much for thinking I might be able to let go a little at least in that form. The others seemed to find a shift freeing, even when they didn’t fully remember what happened. My wolf hadn’t even made her appearance yet and she was already causing all kinds of trouble.

There was a loud knock at the door a few minutes after I woke up, but I felt silly for even thinking I would have the chance to sleep in. Not that it really mattered. I had to face things eventually, and procrastinating was only going to make it worse.

At least I had another month to figure all this out. Unfortunately, that meant another month with the strange ache in my chest whenever I was separated from the guys. It was like being out of range of Wi-Fi, and everything inside me just kind of slowed to a crawl.”Coming,” I mumbled as the pounding continued.

When I opened the door and found my older cousin on the other side, smirking down at me, I knew it was just going to be that kind of day.”What do you want, Tyler?” I asked, yawning as I pulled my night robe closer around me.”Your dad wants you at the clinic in ten minutes. I’m supposed to make sure you get there.”

I frowned. I really didn’t like Tyler’s new interest in the affairs of the pack. He’d been sucking up to Dad big time, like he thought currying favor with his uncle would land him a better position in the pack. I had unfortunate news for him, because if Dad didn’t treat his own daughter any different-if anything, I got the harsher end of the stick than my packmates-he certainly wasn’t going to give his nephew any preferential treatment.”The clinic?” I asked, pinching the bridge of my nose. I really needed some coffee, but there wasn’t going to be time for that. “Why?””So they can study you and find out why you’re such a dysfunctional freak,” he answered.

I frowned. “Better watch or I’ll have my mates put you on latrine duty for the next decade.”

He scoffed. “Yeah, right. Bet your mates would rather fuck each other than a stuck-up bitch like you.””Out,” I said, pointing down the hall. “Now.””Nine minutes!” he called in a singsong that scraped my brain like nails on a chalkboard. I shut my door and went over to my closet to get dressed, deciding to pull on a pair of nicer jeans and a conservative white top since Dad was already annoyed enough.

What the hell did they want with me at the clinic? I wasn’t some lab rat. Shifting was more of an art than a science, as far as I understood, so I didn’t know what having me poked and prodded was supposed to accomplish, aside from punishing me–which, come to think of it, was probably the point.

Tyler was waiting for me by the time I made it downstairs, leaning on the pillar leading into the hallway and staring down on his phone. Probably sending his unimpressive dick picks to random girls.

He walked to the door and held it open, gesturing gallantly to the Mercedes waiting at the curb. “Your chariot awaits, Princess.””Oh, fuck off,” I muttered, purposely shoving past him on my way out the door. I really wasn’t in the mood for his usual asshole antics.

No matter how stressed I was by the whole arranged mating thing, it could be worse. I could’ve ended up with a complete douchebag like him. I pitied whatever she-wolf actually fell for his bullshit.

He made a few more attempts to get under my skin on the drive, but I ignored him and he eventually gave up. The clinic wasn’t far from the residential district of the pack. We were sheltered and protected, while our sentinels prowled the woods on the further boundaries of the territory, keeping a vigilant watch for any of the rogue wolves or nearby packs who might cause trouble.

I hadn’t been to the clinic since my last annual checkup, since I was more or less the picture of health, but I hoped the tech who had been there last time wasn’t still around, because he gave me the creeps. It wasn’t the kind of thing it would do any good to bring up to Dad, though. As far as he was concerned, as long as a male didn’t try to force a bond or something, he wasn’t doing anything wrong.

It looked like there wasn’t anyone else at the clinic, since the only cars I recognized were Dad’s and the doctor’s. I walked inside as Tyler followed along, far more interested in his phone than anything in the outside world, which suited me fine.

I recognized the girl behind the desk as Lisa, one of the few girls I had been on relatively friendly terms with in junior high, but we had lost touch as soon as I left. I didn’t blame her. There weren’t any perks to befriending the alpha’s daughter like there were in some packs, but it did put a spotlight on you that most weren’t willing to deal with.”Hi,” I said, bracing myself for an awkward reunion. The central pack was essentially a small town, and yet I hadn’t seen her in more than passing at all, really.”Hey,” she said in a slightly tense tone that made it clear my fears were not unfounded. “It’s been a long time.””Yeah, it has,” I said, clearing my throat. “I think I’m supposed to see the doctor, or…?””Yeah, they’re waiting for you,” she said, nodding toward the other hallway. “Good luck.”

It seemed like a strange thing to say, and I could tell from her slight grimace after she said it that she felt the same way, but I thanked her and decided to just hope I wouldn’t need that luck at all.
