“Once he knows Lily’s married, he’ll finally give up on her. Then once you and John get your marriage certificate, you’ll officially be Mrs. Jones!”
“Mom, don’t!”
Elsa stopped her in a panic.
“I know John. He still has feelings for Lily. If he finds out she’s married, he won’t back off-instead, he’ll do everything he can to take her back. Right now, he still believes Lily could never leave him, so he’s willing to take care of me, be good to me. But if he finds out that I was the reason Lily married someone else, he’ll dump me for sure. We have to keep this a secret… I’ll sleep with him soon, get pregnant. Until then, he can’t know. John is mine. I will not lose him!”
“No, just hiding this won’t be enough. I’m still not at ease-
“
“Mom, as long as Lily’s alive and breathing, she’ll always try to take what’s mine. We can’t wait anymore. Tell Dad-this time, there can’t be any more screw-ups. I want Lily ruined, broken, dead. I want her body filthy and her name stinking so badly she’ll never crawl back up for the rest of her life!”
Wendy thought Elsa’s words made perfect sense and gave up calling John. Instead, she phoned Elsa’s biological father, Jimmy Johnson.
When Jimmy said he’d find a way to send Lily to that place, their faces-twisted with hatred-finally curled into cold smiles.
That evening, Nancy called James to come pick up her and Lily, while John came to fetch Elsa.
By coincidence, John’s car ended up parked right next to James’s.
Just as Elsa and Wendy got in, John was about to drive off-until he caught sight of James’s impossibly regal face.
And then, he saw Lily.
Instantly, blood-red rage filled his eyes.
Why was Lily getting into James’s car?
When had she gotten involved with James?
How dare she hook up with another man behind his back?
How dare she!
In John’s mind, Lily was his.
He couldn’t stand the thought of her with someone else-couldn’t stand her heart belonging to another man, couldn’t stand the idea of someone else touching her.
The thought of James possibly kissing her, caressing her smooth, delicate skin, maybe even doing far more-his mind exploded into a sea of blood-red fury, a vision of hell where corpses littered the earth.
Anyone who stands in my way-dies.
He flung his door open, ready to storm over and rip Lily back into his arms. He’d kiss her hard and brand it into her soul: for this life and every life after, she was his-John’s-woman.
But before he could get out of the car, Elsa, sitting in the passenger seat, suddenly winced in pain and clutched his sleeve.
“John, my stomach… it hurts so much…”
She’d seen Lily too.
Of course she wasn’t going to let John run over and snatch her back.
Chin tilted stubbornly, Elsa’s beautiful face was tinged with pain, her expression heartbreakingly fragile. “It hurts…”
Seeing her looking so pale and weak, John hesitated.
And in that moment, James’s car drove away.
Out of the corner of his eye, John also noticed, Nancy sitting in the backseat with Lily.
That calmed him-just a little.
He’d seen Nancy’s public statement earlier today-every word in it overflowing with fondness for Lily.
Years ago, Simon had once mentioned that before James fell into a coma, he’d been in love with a woman
-so much so he refused to marry anyone else.
The Luke family had strict values. James wasn’t the type to play around while still pining for someone else. If he already had someone he loved, there was no way he’d get involved with Lily.
If Lily was in his car, it was probably just because Nancy liked her and asked James to give her a ride.
Now that he was sure James wasn’t interested in Lily, the fury clouding John’s mind slowly began to fade.
But still… something unsettled him.
He couldn’t quite place it. He didn’t even understand what was bothering him.
“John… I feel so awful… am I dying?”
Elsa’s lips were stained with red, her face contorted in pain. John couldn’t think straight anymore. He quickly pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly, his voice soft and full of concern.
“Elsa, I won’t let anything happen to you. I’ll take you to the hospital right now.”
“It hurts… I’m so cold…”
She clung to him tightly. “John, hold me… I really don’t feel good…”
“I… I’m so tired. My eyes feel so heavy. I just want to sleep for a little while… but I’m scared. What if I close my eyes and never see you again?”
They sat side by side-he in the driver’s seat, she in the passenger seat. The way he held her was awkward.
But blood still clung to the corner of her lips, and the brightness that once defined her features had faded into a sickly pale. She really didn’t look well.
John was afraid something might actually happen to her. He didn’t want any regrets. He tightened his arms around her, holding her even closer.
“John, I love you… so, so much.”
Elsa rested her face against his chest like a fragile Persian cat, soft and clinging.
“Promise me… don’t leave me. Never leave me, okay?”
Never leave her…
John only meant to stay by her side through this last stretch.
But she didn’t have a “forever.” At best, a few months left. He didn’t want to disappoint her. So he said gently,
“I won’t ever leave you.”
Hearing that promise, Elsa’s lips curved slightly-so subtly he couldn’t see it.
He said it.
Forever
She would never let him break that promise. Once she had his baby, the three of them would be together. Forever.
Lily’s attention was focused on Nancy. She hadn’t even noticed John and Elsa not far off.
After dinner, she returned directly to the room she shared with James-unaware that Grace was about to explode with rage.
The servants cleaned James and Lily’s room every day.
That afternoon, one of them reported to Grace: the bed in the study was made up, with folded clothes laid out-James had apparently been sleeping there lately.
Grace genuinely liked Lily.
She knew very well the whole idea of finding a wife for James while he was in a coma was a desperate move. It was absurd from the beginning.
But Lily had agreed to marry into the family anyway, and for that, Grace was truly grateful.
After meeting her, she’d felt Lily’s clear, steady gaze, her thoughtful manners, her calm and considerate nature. Beyond gratitude, she began to truly like the girl.
In her eyes, her cold, aloof grandson was lucky-lucky to marry someone as lovely and sweet as Lily.
And she was sure that someone as kind as Lily would eventually win over James, even if he wasn’t ready right away. Once he calmed down, their relationship would blossom.
Who would’ve thought the boy would pull something like… separate bedrooms!
Separate bedrooms! No talking, no hand-holding, no kissing, no cuddling-how were they supposed to build any connection?
Grace felt like James was trying to piss her off until she dropped dead-so he could burn incense at her grave!
Since waking up, James had been following the nutritionist’s plan. Every night, a servant brought a glass of milk to his room.
