Her roommates’ playful teasing brought a flush of warmth to Docie’s cheeks. Grabbing the dress box, she stood abruptly. “I’m done talking to you two! Go clean up and get to bed already!”
Once in her room, Docie shut the door firmly, cutting off the sound of her roommates’ laughter and banter. At last, a wave of calm washed over her.
Docie’s gaze drifted to the full-length mirror beside her wardrobe.
The reflection staring back at her was slender and lively, her high ponytail adding to the aura of youthful energy she exuded. Even in her modest professional attire, she carried an undeniable charm.
Docie was well aware of her own attractiveness and capabilities, and she also understood that she had a stroke of fortune that many in her position lacked.
Though she had her fair share of admirers, she’d never ventured into a relationship—she just hadn’t met anyone who truly piqued her interest.
The flush on Docie’s cheeks slowly faded as she pressed her lips together and stepped closer to the mirror, staring intently at the girl reflected in it.
“I have so much to offer. All I ask for is someone with a strong family background, good looks, a kind heart, and steadfast loyalty in love. Why does that feel like asking for the impossible?”
Her long eyelashes fluttered as her gaze swept over her features. She truly was beautiful. A fresh surge of optimism flowed through Docie. She was young, remarkable, and entirely certain that, someday, she’d cross paths with that special someone meant for her.
With deliberate care, Docie tucked the dress away, took a shower, and sank onto her bed, letting sleep quietly overtake her.
The following morning, after her alarm blared relentlessly for the umpteenth time, Docie groggily pushed herself up in bed.
When she opened her bedroom door, she found that her roommates had already left for work but had thoughtfully set out breakfast for her. Once she finished her meal, Docie quickly grabbed her things and rushed off to the office. She caught the elevator just in the nick of time, hurrying to the bus stop outside her apartment complex. Fortunately, the bus arrived within a minute, and after an uneventful ride, she made it to the office just in time to clock in.
Her colleagues had all arrived, greeting Docie with warm smiles before diving right back into their animated chatter.
Docie couldn’t help but notice the unusually upbeat vibe in the department that morning. What was everyone so cheerful about?
Curious, she turned to the colleague seated across from her, who was grinning ear to ear. “Kori, what’s going on today? Why is everyone buzzing with excitement?”
Kori Marquez chuckled at Docie’s puzzled look, clearly relishing the opportunity to spill the tea.
“You came late, so you missed all the fun. When Miss Riggs came this morning, her fianc? was with her! They’re absolutely adorable together! And let me tell you—her fianc? is ridiculously handsome…”
As Kori explained, it finally clicked for Docie why everyone was so hyped up. Office gossip about the boss was always a juicy topic. Still, Docie couldn’t help but feel surprised that Susan’s fianc? had made an appearance at the company.
Since Susan had taken her on as a student, Docie had never once heard her mention her fianc?. All Docie knew was that he, too, was the CEO of a major corporation.
Docie had always assumed Susan avoided mentioning him because their relationship was more of a business arrangement than a loving partnership. But now, it appeared that her assumptions might have been wrong.
Docie couldn’t tell if Kori had exaggerated, but her curiosity was undeniably sparked. If she sought out Susan now, she might catch a glimpse of Susan’s fianc?.
Docie remained at her desk, her focus slipping as thoughts swirled in her mind. Just then, the department manager entered, ready to distribute tasks. Aware that he routinely reported their daily schedule to Susan, Docie spoke up.
“Sir, may I take today’s schedule to Miss Riggs? I need to discuss something with her.”
Although Susan’s choice to mentor Docie hadn’t been officially announced, the news had already circulated throughout the company.
The department manager, not thinking much of it, handed her the schedule.
“Alright, Docie, thank you.”
“Not a problem.”
Schedule in hand, Docie made her way to the Riggs Group’s top floor. Inside Susan’s office, Dane sat, holding her hand with evident nervousness.
“Susan, if you feel unwell at all, you have to tell me, alright?”
Seated on the sofa, Susan felt a touch of embarrassment as she recalled what had happened before entering the office.
That morning, Dane had driven her to the Riggs Group building. As she stepped out of the car, a sudden flutter in her stomach caught her off guard. It was the first time she’d felt the baby kick since her pregnancy began, and the sensation startled her enough to elicit a small scream.
Panicked, Dane leapt out of the car, ready to rush her to the hospital. At that very moment, other employees were arriving for work, many of whom saw Dane lifting her at the building’s entrance.
Susan calmly explained to Dane that it was only the baby moving. Yet, his concern for her well-being lingered.
Though reluctant, he agreed not to take her to the hospital but insisted on accompanying her to the office. Susan had little choice but to allow him to accompany her.
Together, they entered the exclusive elevator, with Dane carrying her in his arms while employees watched curiously.
Susan was known for her professional demeanor, a stark contrast to her personal life. Yet, after this morning’s event, she couldn’t help but feel that her image had shifted in the eyes of those who had witnessed it.
Gently shaking her head, Susan placed Dane’s hand on her belly. “See? Everything’s fine—it’s just the baby moving. Didn’t we learn about this in our prenatal classes?”
Dane recognized he might have overreacted, but the theoretical knowledge they’d gained from the doctor felt entirely different when faced with the real experience.
The furrow in Dane’s brow showed that, despite Susan’s reassurances, his worry hadn’t fully subsided. After a moment’s thought, he looked into Susan’s eyes and proposed, “Susan, you’ve been through so much these past few months. With our wedding just two weeks away, why not work from home for now? Having a medical team on standby would give me so much peace of mind.”
While Dane radiated calm and composure in the business world, his profound care for his family, especially Susan, was clear. He wasn’t trying to hinder her career but rather saw working from home as a beneficial option for her.
Looking into Dane’s worried eyes, Susan hesitated, then nodded in agreement. It wouldn’t hinder any essential tasks, and it might allow Dane to concentrate on his work without constant concern for her well-being.
“Alright, let’s do it your way,” Susan said with a soft smile.
Dane felt an immense weight lift from his heart at Susan’s agreement, relief flooding through him.
“I’ve already arranged for the medical team. Just let me know if you need anything at home. I’ll handle any work-related issues to make sure you’re as comfortable and stress-free as possible…”
“Okay, I got it,” Susan interjected, cutting him off. “Everything you’ve done for me has always been perfect.”
Dane’s sharp features softened as his gaze filled with love for Susan.
Taking her hand, he pressed a gentle kiss to it.
“Anyway, it’s been hard on you, darling. Are there any documents you need to take home? I’ll help you pack.”
Susan listed a few items, and Dane listened attentively before standing, his tall frame moving gracefully toward the desk.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
A knock at the office door drew both Susan’s and Dane’s attention, and Docie stepped in, schedule in hand.
“Miss Riggs, I’ve brought today’s schedule.”
Docie handed the schedule to Susan, her head tilting slightly as she sneaked a glance at Dane, who stood nearby, observing.
Dane wore a perfectly tailored black suit, a color that might seem dull on others but, with his commanding height and distinguished features, looked exceptionally striking. He stood there with a folder in his long, well-defined fingers.
The light pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows highlighted his unmatched handsomeness, casting a soft, radiant glow around him.
Docie had heard Kori describe Susan’s fianc? as incredibly handsome. At the time, she’d nodded, curious but skeptical, questioning if he could surpass a star’s looks. When Docie finally met him, she realized Kori hadn’t exaggerated one bit. Susan’s fianc? had striking looks, an impeccable physique, and a magnetic charisma that could easily rival a star’s.
“Docie?”
Dane’s gentle voice carried through the office as he paused what he was doing.
Towering over Docie, Dane glanced down, his long eyelashes catching her attention.
“I’ve heard a lot about you from Susan. I’m her fianc?.”
Dane usually maintained an indifference toward those outside his family, but since Docie was Susan’s student, he made a rare exception to converse with her.
As Dane spoke, Docie couldn’t help but notice how exceptionally pleasant his voice was. His unhurried tone added an intriguing layer of mystery to his presence.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Patton.”
Docie’s heart skipped a beat as she quickly looked away, suddenly feeling shy about meeting Dane’s gaze. She noticed the subtle shift in his tone, moving from detached to gentle as he finished speaking.
“Miss Riggs, if the schedule is in order, I’ll take my leave.”
