When she arrived at Klein Group, the sight of her took the employees working overtime by surprise.
She greeted them warmly before finding Andrew’s secretary.
The secretary quickly stood and greeted nervously, “Hello, Miss Patton.”
Puzzled by Isabella’s visit, the secretary listened attentively as she inquired, “Is Andrew in his office?”
The secretary nodded quickly. “Yes, he hasn’t left.”
“Great, thank you.”
Carrying the container, Isabella made her way to Andrew’s office and knocked gently on the door.
When no response came, she frowned slightly, her hand hesitating on the knob before she pushed it open just a crack.
Through the narrow gap, she didn’t see Andrew busy in a meeting with headphones on. Instead, she spotted him leaning back in his chair, his elbow propped on the desk as his long fingers rubbed the bridge of his nose. His eyes were shut, his posture signaling exhaustion.
Isabella’s fingers twitched instinctively. After two seconds of silent deliberation, she shut the door again and turned back to the secretary.
Noticing the thermal container in her hands earlier, the secretary had already guessed why she had come. But her return puzzled him. Why hadn’t she delivered the meal? Was Andrew not in the office?
“Miss Patton, do you need something?” the secretary asked, curious.
Isabella nodded, her tone even as she replied, “I want to ask you something.”
The secretary gave a quick nod. “Of course, what is it, Miss Patton?”
Isabella asked, “Has Klein Group been especially busy lately? I’ve noticed everyone seems more swamped than usual. Before, you guys didn’t often have to work weekends.”
The secretary wasn’t surprised by her question.
After all, the recent workload had been intense, and given her relationship with Andrew, it was only natural for her to be concerned.
“It’s all because of Dr. Mia,” the secretary explained, not hesitating for a second.
“Dr. Mia?”
Isabella was stunned, a wave of confusion washing over her. She hadn’t been involved in any collaborations with the Klein Group recently, so she couldn’t fathom why this matter would concern her.
The secretary explained, “Klein Group has been working on a deal with a company from Mafelen, and it’s almost finalized. However, the other party suddenly added a condition. They want Mr. Klein to arrange for them to meet Dr. Mia. Mr. Klein refused but doesn’t intend to shelve the cooperation. So now, we’re shifting our strategy to advance the business plan.”
As he spoke, the secretary shrugged.
“Since it’s a Plan B, it’s definitely not as straightforward as Plan A. Many connections need to be reestablished, and Mr. Klein seems quite anxious. That’s why we’re in such a rush. But once we’re done, the benefits will multiply several times.”
As the secretary finished explaining, his tone carried a sense of optimism and expectancy, as if the prospect of multiplied benefits had already painted a bright future in his mind. Isabella, however, pursed her lips, lost in thought.
Klein Group’s potential partner wanted to meet Dr. Mia, but Andrew had never mentioned it to her.
He even hid from her while he was swamped with work at the company.
Isabella could guess Andrew’s reason for keeping this matter from her. He was worried her identity would be exposed, so he chose the longer, more convoluted route to protect her.
However, Isabella was more than willing to treat anyone if it could ease Andrew’s burden. Besides, her consultation fees were very high, and she had no reason to miss out on earning money.
Seeing Isabella’s reaction, the secretary looked anxious at once, worrying she might overthink.
“Miss Patton, I only wanted to inform you of the situation. I feel that Mr. Klein can reach Dr. Mia, but he must have his reasons for refusing. Mr. Klein always has good reasons for his decisions. So, please don’t worry. He is very capable.”
Isabella nodded. “Okay, I understand.”
At that moment, the secretary’s phone buzzed, interrupting their conversation. He glanced at Isabella hesitantly. Isabella waved him off to let him get back to work. Then, she stood in front of Andrew’s office door again.
This time, she pushed the door open and walked in. Andrew was writing something with his head down.
He felt the door open but didn’t hear a knock. So, he glared at the door with sharp eyes. But when he saw the familiar slender figure, the chill in his eyes dissipated, replaced by warmth and surprise.
“Sweetheart, what brings you here?”
Andrew put down his pen, stood up, and walked toward Isabella.
For now, Isabella decided not to mention the matter concerning Dr. Mia. Instead, she lifted the thermos container and said, “I thought it was almost time to get off work. So, I brought you a surprise. Are you surprised?”
Andrew nodded with a smile. “Of course. Thank you, sweetheart. I love it.”
Earlier in the day, Andrew had been caught up in a lengthy meeting with his partners. The discussion had stretched well beyond the usual time for the company’s lunch break. By the time it was over, it was well into the afternoon. He was too busy to eat out, so he could only have a strong cup of coffee to keep him going.
Now that the meal was in front of him, he realized how hungry he was.
Isabella stepped around the desk, reached out, and took Andrew’s long, slender hand. Without a word, she gently pulled him up from his chair, guiding him toward the sofa.
“Come on. After you eat, I have something to discuss with you.”
When Andrew heard Isabella mention that she had something to discuss, he immediately set aside the weariness and emotions that had been building throughout the day.
He picked up a fork and handed it to Isabella, intending to eat with her.
Isabella shook her head. “I’ve already eaten at home. This is just for you. Go ahead and eat while it’s hot.”
Andrew smiled brightly. “Alright.”
He ate with quiet grace, his demeanor refined. But hunger must have caught up with him. He quickly finished everything, savoring each bite.
“Sweetheart, what do you want to discuss with me?” Andrew asked, tidying up the thermos container. He looked at Isabella solemnly.
Isabella thought for a moment. “You’ve been so busy lately, and I’m a bit worried.”
Andrew already had an idea about what Isabella wanted to say. His throat tightened, as he wanted to brush it off. But before he could say anything, Isabella continued, “Andre, your secretary has already told me that your potential partner from Mafelen wants to meet me. Why didn’t you tell me?”
Andrew’s brows furrowed tightly. He hadn’t expected the secretary to have such a big mouth.
Isabella held his hand and looked into his eyes. Although the signs of fatigue had disappeared, it didn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t tired.
“Don’t take this against your secretary, okay? It was me who asked him.”
For some reason, Andrew felt uneasy while listening to Isabella. Although Isabella didn’t look angry, he felt she was.
Andrew was unsure, so he could only answer honestly, “I can’t use your identity to negotiate deals.”
“Who’s using who? I don’t think of it that way. I want to help you, then you won’t be so exhausted.” As she spoke, Isabella squeezed his palm, trying to persuade him.
“I don’t feel exhausted, and I don’t fear trouble,” Andrew said firmly. “Klein Group was even more challenging when I first took it over. But I got through it, right?”
Isabella looked at him with a frown. “That was different. Back then, you didn’t have me. But now, I’m here. I want to help you. I’m not weak, and I know you won’t put me in danger.”
Andrew’s expression became even more solemn. “But there are times I may overlook something. The chances of danger are slim. But if it happens, it’s beyond what I can bear.”
His words filled Isabella with a warmth that spread through her chest, settling deeply in her heart. But they also solidified her determination to help him solve this problem.
“I want to help you. If you refuse, I’ll consider a different approach. So why don’t you let me help you, and together, we’ll tackle this issue? My identity as Dr. Mia won’t stay hidden forever—I’ve been ready for that day to come for a long time. Andre, please.”
Isabella caught the weight of Andrew’s silence and decided to dial up her charm.
Andrew was strong enough to protect her. But Isabella was strong, too—she’d thrived just fine before he stepped into her life.
Her mind flickered back to a message she had received on the Dark Site. This person from Mafelen… It had to be the same one persistently searching for her on the Dark Site.
Such unwavering determination hinted at desperation. Their condition must be dire.
