“I understand you’re also a member of the Qiviut Organization. That’s great! May I seek your help if I have any questions in the future?” Jada looked at him sincerely.

The Qiviut Organization members were elite and generally supportive of each other.

“If you have time, you might want to focus on preparing for the evaluation,” Jared said with a hint of mockery. To him, Jada was just a nuisance. She was far from deserving a conversation about such matters.

Every year, the Qiviut Organization had many interns, but fewer than three would be promoted to full members. Jada’s face paled slightly as she realized that Jared looked down on her. It was clear he was merely toying with her feelings. “I will pass the evaluation and look forward to working with you.”

Jada chose to say no more and left, aware that continuing would only irritate Jared further.

As she exited the company, her phone rang. “Damari’s condition has worsened? Alright, I’m on my way!” In the lab, while Isabella was deep in research, she learned of Damari’s relapse. Leaving her work behind, she hurried to the hospital.

Upon arrival, she found that Damari had just been stabilized. The doctor was speaking with Andrew. “Your grandfather’s condition is critical. We’ve done all we can, and staying in the hospital might worsen his condition. It’s better for him to return home and spend his remaining time there.”

As the doctor spoke, he barely dared to breathe. The air around the man across from him was so heavy and ominous that it felt like a single misstep would leave him mangled on the spot.

Isabella waited for Andrew at the office door. When he stepped out, his face was clouded with dread, and a heavy weight of despair seemed to hang over him. “I believe Damari will be fine,” Isabella whispered, pulling him into a comforting embrace. He pulled her close, holding her tightly.

The dark aura surrounding him weighed heavily on Isabella, making her heart ache in a way she couldn’t shake. For Andrew, Damari was his last remaining family. If he lost him, the pain would be unbearable. “I’ll be with you,” Isabella whispered softly.

After what felt like an eternity of silence, Andrew finally gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.

“He woke up!” The assistant hurried over to deliver the news.

They quickly made their way to the ward. When they arrived, they found Jada already there. With red-rimmed eyes and a concerned expression, Jada chatted with Damari.

Noticing that Isabella and Andrew had returned, Damari said, “Everyone else, please step outside. Isabella, I’d like to have a word with you.”

Though Isabella felt a twinge of apprehension, she nodded in agreement.

Jada pressed her lips together and then stepped out obediently, joining Andrew by the door. She gently patted his back and murmured, “Andrew, try not to be too disheartened. I know of a research institute that’s on the verge of developing a groundbreaking new drug. If Damari receives this treatment, it should make all the difference.”

Andrew remained silent, his gaze fixed intently on the door. Jada’s eyes also stayed on the door, her fists clenched tightly. She couldn’t fathom why Damari would want to speak privately with Isabella. Every time his condition worsened, she was always the first to rush to his side. Yet, in her heart, it seemed she could not quite measure up to Isabella. Her kindness seemed to be in vain! Jada felt a twinge of unhappiness.

In the ward, Damari said, “I can sense the end is near. When I’m gone, please look after Andrew for me. He won’t listen to anyone else but you. You must take good care of him. I’ll be forever grateful.” He grasped Isabella’s hand.

Isabella’s voice trembled as she fought back tears. “Damari, don’t talk like that. You’re going to pull through.”

“Everyone tries to reassure me, but I know my own body. I don’t have much time left. What worries me most is Andrew. Promise me—no matter how hard it gets, don’t abandon him, please,” Damari said sincerely.

Isabella felt a deep sadness settle within her. Why did families who shared such profound love, like Andrew and Damari, have to face such heart-wrenching separation?

“Damari, I promise,” Isabella said firmly. “But you must do everything you can to fight for life.”

“Okay.” Damari managed a weary smile, closing his eyes as he accepted the harsh truth—he had less than a week left to live.

At the sight of Damari in such a state, Isabella’s heart ached with deep sadness. As she stepped out of the ward, Jada immediately approached her, asking, “What did Damari say to you?”

Without sparing a glance at Jada, Isabella said to Andrew, “Take care of Damari; I have something I need to do.”

She turned on her heel and headed swiftly toward the exit.

Jada frowned and questioned, “Is there anything more important than Damari right now?”

Without responding to her, Andrew walked back into the ward.

Jada felt slighted by their disregard, and her dissatisfaction boiled over. She stamped her feet and followed Andrew into the ward.

Over the next two days, a steady stream of visitors came to see Damari. Everyone was aware that his time was running short and he wouldn’t live long. Glenn and Elaine visited nearly every day, and Andrew remained by Damari’s side, never straying far from the bedside.

Even Jada visited every day. The only one who remained conspicuously absent was Isabella. No one knew what she was up to.

Some of the Klein family’s relatives, who were acquainted with Jada, expressed their sympathy for her when they learned that Andrew had gotten together with Isabella. Now, they finally had their chance to badmouth Isabella.

“Uncle Damari, with you in this state, why hasn’t Isabella come to you? What could possibly be more important than you right now?” a distant nephew of Damari remarked.

“I’m fine now. Isabella has something important to handle. If you have other matters to attend to, you can go ahead and take care of them, too,” Damari said casually.

“Oh, uncle, Jada’s running her own company and must have pressing matters to handle. Yet she’s been here with you every day. Her dedication shows just how much she cares for you.” The nephew praised Jada.

Hearing this, Jada interjected, “My company is still in its early stages, so I don’t have much on my plate. Perhaps Isabella has something more pressing to attend to.”

“Is it really more important than Uncle Damari’s well-being? If Isabella truly cared, she would have been here, looking after him herself.” The nephew’s face was flushed with righteous indignation.

Damari said, his voice indifferent, “What’s the fuss? Am I dying?”

“Of course not. It’s just that you’re not in the best of health right now, and we all care about you. After all, she’s your future granddaughter-in-law, but it seems she doesn’t show much concern. Uncle Damari, I fear she might treat Andrew the same way in the future,” his nephew said earnestly.

“I know her well enough. If you don’t, then maybe it’s best to keep your opinions to yourself,” Damari said coldly.

Damari’s distant nephew quickly discerned his uncle’s dissatisfaction and, sensing the tense atmosphere, chose not to proceed further. Annoyed, Damari waved his hand dismissively, signaling for everyone to leave. The chatter and false concern had become a cacophony too grating to bear. Did they truly think he was oblivious to their thinly veiled motives?

As the room emptied, Damari lay back on his bed, yearning for a moment of peace. However, peace was elusive; the group merely congregated at the door, whispering among themselves. At such a critical juncture, their minds buzzed with thoughts of what might happen should Damari die. Their presence, under the guise of loyalty, was nothing more than a ruse to secure a larger share of his estate. After all, the sprawling branches of the Klein family tree depended heavily on Damari and Andrew.

“Thank you, everyone. I truly hope Damari can recover soon,” Jada said, her eyes red and weary as if she were truly suffering.

“Jada, you’re so considerate. You’re just a friend of Andrew, yet you’re so kind to Damari. But as his future granddaughter-in-law, Isabella never comes to visit him!” someone commented, stirring dissatisfaction among the crowd.

“Don’t say that. I think there must be something important keeping Isabella away.”

“Well, no matter how important the matter is, can it really be more important than Damari? I think she just doesn’t care about him!” Damari’s distant nephew sneered.

Jada, on the other hand, shook her head in resignation. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed reporters snapping photos from a distance. Quickly adapting to the unwanted attention, Jada feigned deeper sorrow and sobbed dramatically. The scene, perfectly captured, was soon splashed across the internet.

In the afternoon, the doctor arrived to check on Damari, with Jada following closely behind. After the doctor left, Jada looked at Damari with concern and asked, “Damari, how are you feeling?”

“I’m fine,” Damari replied, though his pale face belied his words.

Jada’s heart went out to him. “Damari, if you feel uncomfortable, just tell me. Do you want anything to eat? I’ll cook for you.”

“Damari!” Just then, a voice rang out from the doorway. Damari’s eyes widened as Susan entered the room, laden with various tonics. She set them on the table and explained, “Isabella has something to deal with, so she asked me to come to see you.”

“Really? What’s wrong?” Damari asked, his concern evident.

“She didn’t tell me either. It must be something very important,” Susan replied. Sitting beside him, Susan inquired gently, “Damari, how do you feel?”

“Well, I don’t know how many days I still have.” Damari sighed, a note of resignation in his voice.

Jada, hearing this exchange, felt a pang of annoyance. Damari was always polite to her, but with Susan, he seemed to reveal his true feelings. The irony did not escape her; she had been the one by his side these past days.

After some time, Susan turned to Jada and cautioned, “Jada, you’d better stop spreading any rumors about Isabella.”

Damari’s gaze shifted sharply to Jada.

Taken aback, Jada responded, “Susan, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Are you still pretending?” Susan sneered. “Jada, do you think I don’t know that you wrote all the articles criticizing Isabella online? Did you want to use this as an opportunity to undermine her? To rally everyone to your side so you can marry Andrew without any obstacles?”

Damari’s expression darkened significantly. He motioned for the butler to bring him his phone. Though he was elderly and not particularly inclined to surf the internet, he knew how to read the news. When he accessed Twitter, a few trending topics caught his eye: “Ungrateful Isabella,” “Jada taking good care of Damari,” and “Who is more suitable to be Mrs. Klein?”

The news of his illness had spread far and wide. Being the patriarch of the Klein family in Ansport meant that many eyes were constantly watching them. Now, the discussion over who might occupy the position of Mrs. Klein was rampant among the citizens.

Previously, only a select few were aware of the relationship between Isabella and Andrew, but now it seemed the entire community was privy to it. Damari’s illness had drawn Isabella’s absence into sharp relief, leading many to view her unfavorably.

“It’s true that real feelings are revealed in times of trouble. Now that Damari is sick, Isabella has hidden herself away. Is she a monster?”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to let Isabella marry Andrew! Jada is the best choice; she truly cares about Damari. She hasn’t left his side these past few days.”
