Vera wept. “I apologize; I had commitments that evening, so I overwatered earlier in the day. I didn’t anticipate it would lead to this.”

“But if you were preoccupied, couldn’t you have sought help from someone else?” Helen struggled to accept this excuse.

The rest of the team felt let down and perplexed by Vera’s error, aware of its potential impact on the project’s success.

“I’m so sorry, everyone. It’s all my fault. I don’t know how I can ever make this up to you! I’ll resign!” Vera continued tearfully.

Helen clenched her teeth, embarrassed and frustrated. She had trusted someone she considered reliable, only to be disappointed. Helen then turned to Isabella, who remained unflustered, and her irritation grew. “Even if Vera did overwater, our herbs shouldn’t be so delicate as to perish entirely. I don’t believe this is solely her fault. Even without the overwatering, the herbs might not have thrived since they’ve always grown weakly.”

Belen aggressively challenged Isabella, harboring deep contempt for her. She believed Isabella was far too self-assured.

But Isabella didn’t argue; instead, she reached into her bag and pulled out a well-sealed box. Opening it released a strong herbal scent that quickly filled the room.

Everyone immediately recognized the herbs, but the ones in Isabella’s box were far more vibrant and robust than theirs.

“Wow, can magnolia flowers really grow this large? I always thought they were supposed to be small.”

“And the snow lotus looks stunning!”

“Did Dr. Mia grow all of these?”

Everyone’s perception of Isabella changed dramatically. They recognized the need for her expertise!

Helen stared at the box of herbs, her cheeks flushing as if they had been slapped. As someone who was the most knowledgeable about herbs in this lab, she knew exactly how impressively these herbs had been cultivated.

“Since you can’t use yours, feel free to use mine for now,” Isabella said calmly.

Andrew immediately replied, “We’ll pay you the going rate for them.”

“There’s no need for that. The project comes first,” Isabella shook her head.

Helen, still feeling somewhat resentful, muttered under her breath, “Since you knew we shouldn’t water them too much, why didn’t you tell us earlier?”

“Aren’t you the expert here? How could you not know such fundamental things?” Andrew scolded her.

His commanding presence was palpable, and Helen’s expression shifted dramatically under the intense pressure.

“Boss, I made a mistake,” Helen said, her complexion ashen.

“And you…” Andrew then turned his attention from Helen to Vera, who was trembling and appeared quite ill.

Isabella sighed and said calmly, “If you’re ill, you should let everyone know. I’m sure Mr. Klein is compassionate enough to allow you some time off for treatment.”

Vera looked up at Isabella, her eyes wide with fear, while the others gazed at her, puzzled. Vera was sick?

Vera’s lips quivered. “How did you know?”

“Your symptoms are quite obvious. You have a rare type of brain cancer characterized by flocculent materials in your brain. Currently, there are only a few studies that sometimes obstruct your nerves, causing short-term memory lapses. Although the early signs are subtle and often dismissed as mere fatigue, it’s actually a very severe condition…”

Vera’s expression paled. She was aware she was ill, but she hadn’t thought it was severe enough to require hospitalization. Her greatest fear was that once she left, she might never return to the lab. With her family relying on her earnings, she had to keep her job.

Suddenly, Vera covered her face and started crying. “I’m so sorry. My selfishness and stupidity caused all of your efforts to go to waste!”

Helen was stunned; she hadn’t expected Vera to be sick. Andrew faced Vera and said decisively, “Don’t come to work anymore.”

Vera had seen this coming. Her eyes grew dull, and she nodded. “I understand. Boss, I am very grateful for the time I had working with everyone…”

“Look after yourself. The lab will take care of your medical costs. When you’ve fully recovered, you’re welcome back,” Andrew continued, his tone stern yet determined.

Vera was astonished, staring at him in disbelief. “Mr. Klein, really? I can come back when I’m better?”

“You’re a top-notch researcher. We need you,” Andrew responded plainly.

“Alright! I’ll do my best to recover quickly!” Vera exclaimed, tears streaming down her cheeks. She had always seen Andrew as intimidating, yet now she recognized a kindness in him. Despite his lofty position, he showed empathy for his team’s hardships. With newfound resolve, she was eager to heal and return to show her gratitude.

Andrew then turned to Helen, his voice commanding as he said, “Apologize to Dr. Mia.”

Helen’s lips tightened, her compliance hesitant. “I’m sorry, Dr. Mia,” she mumbled, her voice lacking sincerity.

Isabella interjected, eager to move past the conflict. “Vera should concentrate on finishing this project. The herbs are ready. The next phase is critical.”

After reviewing their work, Isabella immediately understood why this team hadn’t achieved their goal. It turned out they had fallen short at every step, so she would have to start over from the beginning.

Andrew led Isabella to the extraction area. The room was enormous, and Isabella couldn’t help but wonder how much it had cost to build such an advanced lab.

Isabella oversaw the extraction process. One hour later, as she took off her lab coat, her forehead was covered in sweat. Though brief, the task demanded perfect accuracy, which was tiring.

“Dr. Mia, thank you so much,” Andrew said.

“I’ll ride for you.”

“Okay, but I want to know how much you’ve spent building this,” Isabella said.

“Five billion dollars,” Andrew responded casually.

Isabella was startled. The amount was staggering. It was evident Andrew cared about their health a lot. He was nothing like Corbett, whose only aim was to snatch the CEO position.

“Once the medicine is produced, it can be sold globally. That’s when you’ll start seeing returns,” Isabella said.

“Maybe so, but chasing profits isn’t my goal. If anyone really needs the medicine, we’ll just give it to them,” Andrew replied.

Isabella regarded Andrew, struck by his commanding presence and his kindness.

“I never knew you were such a kind person, Mr. Klein,” she said softly.

“Not everyone can afford the necessary treatments, yet their suffering is the same. Because my grandfather is battling this illness, I want to ensure others with this condition get a chance to recover,” Andrew explained.

His kindness struck a chord. Isabella felt her heart warm at his compassionate words. True worth involved not only riches but also integrity.

“Alright, I’m heading home,” Isabella said.

She was so exhausted that she went directly to bed as soon as she arrived home, not even glancing at her phone.

The following morning, Isabella awoke and noticed a missed call from Andrew.

“Morning! You turned in early last night—what’s going on?” Isabella inquired, her voice heavy with sleep as she yawned.

She had indeed slept well the previous night.

“Nothing pressing; I just missed you,” Andrew said softly.

“Join me for breakfast since you’re up?”

“Okay!”

Isabella ended the call.

She gazed at her phone screen after the call. Last night, Andrew had called at one in the morning, just when she was settling into bed.

It was unusual for Andrew to call so late; he was typically mindful of her need for rest. A troubling thought crossed Isabella’s mind. Could Andrew have suspected something?

She quickly shook off the thought. She had been so cautious; even if she stood directly in front of him, he wouldn’t recognize her.

Telling herself not to overthink things, Isabella proceeded to wash her face and brush her teeth. While preparing, she thought of Josie, who was often troublesome. She decided to reach out to Susan. If Josie was aware of Susan’s connection, she wouldn’t just overlook it.

“Susan, has Josie been troubling you lately?”

“Don’t worry. She probably doesn’t know where I am,” Susan said with a smile.
