Sarai paused for effect, her expression sorrowful. “But now, Andrew is denying that Courtney’s child was his. It’s heartbreaking. Courtney has always been a pure, obedient girl. I’ve raised her to be careful, to wait until marriage for such things. She has never had a…”
Through Sarai’s carefully spun tale, she painted Courtney as an innocent, naive girl who had loved Andrew faithfully, only to be discarded after they had been intimate.
Sarai’s statement swiftly evoked sympathy from everyone in the hospital room. A few hours later, the reporters wrapped up their coverage and exited the hospital, leaving Courtney and Sarai alone.
Once Sarai shut the door behind them, Courtney let out a sigh of relief. “Mom, could you get me some water? My throat is dry from all that crying.” Sarai handed Courtney a glass of water, which she drank in one gulp. Eagerly, she checked her phone to follow the unfolding situation online. As she scrolled through the posts, a smile spread across her face. “Mom, Dora’s plan is harsh, but it is incredibly effective. I’ve never seen one issue capture the public’s attention like this before.”
“Dora certainly lives up to the Klein family’s reputation,” Sarai agreed, though she looked at Courtney with a hint of concern. “It’s unfortunate that this has affected your health. But once you marry Andrew, you must take extra care of yourself to recover.”
“Don’t worry about it, Mom. If I get to Andrew, it’ll all be worth it,” Courtney replied casually. She had become obsessed with joining the Klein family and was prepared to do whatever it took. After her father was imprisoned, she realized that making her own way up the social ladder was her only option.
Just then, Dora’s call came through. “You did a great job. The Klein Group is facing serious trouble now. Damari has already been inundated with calls,” Dora said approvingly. “Damari has asked Andrew to come home tomorrow, and you should join him.”
“Got it,” Sarai responded. However, she remained uneasy. “Do you really think Damari will agree to the marriage?”
Dora pondered the question. “Based on what I know about Damari, it’s possible. Even if the marriage doesn’t happen, the Klein family will owe you a favor. Damari will ensure you’re compensated.”
“I’ll try to convince him to agree to the marriage tomorrow,” Sarai said with determination.
Courtney’s eyes gleamed as she looked at her mother. “Mom, you have to make this work! I’ve sacrificed so much—I need to make it count!”
“Of course, dear,” Sarai agreed, affectionately stroking Courtney’s hair, though a sharp, calculating glint flashed in her eyes.
It continued to drizzle through the night, and the next day broke with a gray, somber sky. Isabella woke early and accompanied Andrew to the Klein Manor.
During the drive, Elaine called to check on Isabella. She reassured her that she was fine and there was nothing to worry about.
Elaine couldn’t shake her anxiety. “Courtney is incredibly manipulative—she sacrificed her own baby just to set you both up! Unbelievable!”
“Mom, don’t stress. In the end, their schemes will only come back to haunt them.”
“But with the baby gone, we can’t do a paternity test. How are we supposed to prove that the baby wasn’t Andrew’s?” Elaine was still worried.
Isabella looked at Andrew and remarked, “He must have been ready for this.”
Andrew replied calmly, “Tell your mother that we’ll sort everything out today.”
Andrew had initially intended to postpone matters, but with Isabella now facing criticism, he felt he could no longer remain passive. He resolved to put an end to it all today.
Isabella passed on Andrew’s message to Elaine, who sighed in response. “Okay, let’s hope things turn out well.”
At the Klein Manor, Isabella trailed closely behind Andrew as they entered the living room. Just as they stepped through the door, something shattered at their feet.
“You bastard!” Damari roared from the sofa, his anger palpable.
Courtney was nearby, dabbing at her face and looking completely distraught, while Dora stood quietly to one side.
Isabella’s heart raced. She hadn’t expected Damari’s anger to be so intense. It was evident that Courtney’s scheme had hit a nerve, tapping into Damari’s deep sense of justice.
Damari’s rage subsided slightly when he saw Isabella. His previously fierce expression softened as he said, “Isabella, come here and sit.”
Isabella and Andrew took their seats, and Damari looked at Isabella with a look of regret. “Isabella, I’m deeply sorry. I must not have raised Andrew properly; otherwise, we wouldn’t be dealing with this now.”
“Mr. Klein, please don’t say that,” Isabella responded soothingly. “I believe Andrew would never do anything so dishonorable.”
Her composed manner gained her some favor in Damari’s eyes. He then turned to Andrew and asked, “Andrew, did you cause the miscarriage?”
“I had nothing to do with it,” Andrew replied coolly.
Hearing that, Sarai began to weep, even dropping to her knees in front of Damari. “Mr. Klein, I had no option but to come to you. Courtney was just making her way down the stairs when someone pushed her. By the time I reached her, she was lying in a pool of blood.”
Sarai’s display of despair was so convincing that anyone who heard her might feel a pang of sympathy. Isabella interjected, “You mentioned Courtney was going down the stairs—where exactly did this happen?”
Sarai sobbed as she said, “We were at a restaurant.”
Isabella scoffed. “There are so many restaurants in town. It’s quite a coincidence you chose one with stairs.” The sarcasm in Isabella’s voice made Sarai sob even more.
“We just wanted to have a simple meal. If I had known this would happen, I would have avoided the place. Isabella, how can you still mock us now? Courtney is your cousin!”
Or were you also behind this because you didn’t want Andrew to marry Courtney?”
Sarai aimed to ruin Isabella’s reputation with just a few well-chosen words. But Isabella wasn’t one to back down easily. She sneered, her voice cutting through the tension, “Sarai, who are you trying to disgust now? If your cousin seduced your boyfriend and ended up pregnant, would you want them to be together?”
Sarai’s eyes were filled with fake tears as she responded, “But they already had a child! You should have just let them be together! Mr. Klein, please, show us a way forward.” As she spoke, Sarai dramatically dropped to her knees, kowtowing in a display of exaggerated despair.
Damari, visibly uncomfortable, quickly signaled for someone to help her up. “Sarai, calm down. If the child really was Andrew’s and he had a hand in its loss, I’ll make sure he receives justice.”
“Thank you, Mr. Klein,” Sarai sniffled, her tone dripping with false gratitude. “Without your support, I wouldn’t know what to do. Courtney is devastated, and she’s been suicidal. I’ve even thought about ending it all.” Behind those tears was a veiled threat. The message was clear: if the Klein family didn’t provide a satisfactory resolution, Sarai was prepared to take drastic measures.
Isabella watched with growing disgust, recognizing the malicious intent behind every word and action.
Dora, who had been observing silently, sighed and then spoke up, turning to Damari. “Damari, I believe Courtney truly loves Andrew. Perhaps the best way to make amends is to arrange their marriage as compensation. After all, they can always have another child once they’re married, right? What do you think?”
Sarai’s eyes brightened at the suggestion, her earlier despair quickly replaced with eager anticipation. Damari pondered for a moment, then turned his gaze to Andrew. “What’s your take on this?”
Andrew’s response was unwavering. “Out of the question! The mistress of the Klein family cannot be someone so malicious!”
Sarai immediately burst into dramatic tears. “Courtney has been wronged, and it’s all for nothing! Courtney’s father is in jail, and now no one respects us. What’s the point of living anymore?”
“Sarai, please calm down,” Dora interjected, wrapping a comforting arm around her. “Damari is a fair man. He’ll make sure Courtney gets the justice she deserves.”
Damari slammed his hand down on the table, his voice sharp. “Andrew, you’ve been foolish and irresponsible. I didn’t raise you to be like this. If you can’t offer a reasonable explanation, you might as well step down as CEO.”
The room fell silent, the weight of Damari’s words sinking in. He was actually considering stripping Andrew of his CEO position?
The mere suggestion caused Dora’s heart to leap with joy. If Andrew fell from grace, it would be her family’s opportunity to seize power. After all, Damari was still the chairman, and as long as he held that title, the CEO could be replaced at any time.
Andrew looked from Damari to Sarai, his eyes narrowing. “You claim I’m responsible for Courtney’s miscarriage. How can you be so sure?”
Sarai clutched her chest, tears streaming down her face. “The person who pushed Courtney disappeared! After that, we couldn’t find him. If anyone had a motive to want that child gone, it would be you, Andrew. There’s no other explanation!”
“But I didn’t need to do that,” Andrew said, his voice as cold as ice. “Because the child wasn’t mine, and I never laid a hand on Courtney.”
A stunned silence gripped the room as Andrew continued, his tone unwavering. “Courtney had delusions. And I have the surveillance footage from that night to prove it.” Without missing a beat, Andrew retrieved his iPad and played the video.
The screen displayed Courtney leading a heavily intoxicated Andrew into a hotel room. Moments later, the footage showed Andrew leaving the room, still stumbling but clearly alone. The camera then captured another inebriated man entering the room where Courtney remained. Sarai’s complexion turned ashen, her eyes wide with panic.
“This can’t be real! The video must be fake!”
Andrew remained composed, barely glancing at Sarai. Instead, he turned the iPad toward Dora, his gaze penetrating. “Dora, what do you think? Does this footage look fake to you?”
Dora’s sharp gaze locked onto the screen. There were no signs of editing, no evidence of manipulation. She inwardly cursed Sarai for her recklessness.
Sarai and Courtney had made claims, yet they didn’t even know for sure if Andrew was the one who slept with Courtney. There was no doubt that Andrew had only been in the room for a minute. To suggest that he could have impregnated Courtney in such a short time was simply absurd!
Andrew’s gaze was piercing as he explained, “At that time, I believed Isabella was dead. The pain was unbearable, and I drank far more than I should have. When Courtney led me away, I was too out of it to realize what was happening. I mistook her for Isabella. But the moment I lay down, I knew something was wrong. I got up and left immediately. As for what happened after I left, I had no idea.”
Damari watched the surveillance footage with a calm, almost knowing expression. In fact, he was well aware of Andrew’s character and had been playing along with Andrew’s plan in the past few days.
Andrew turned his gaze on Sarai, his eyes cold and cutting, like the blade of a knife. “Sarai, your scheme ends here. It was your daughter who approached me and led me into that room. Yet, you claim that I made the first move? It’s laughable. With Isabella in my life, do you really think I’d be interested in your daughter?”
Sarai’s face went pale, the color draining from her lips as the weight of Andrew’s words hit her.
Dora spoke up again. “Andrew, Courtney is a decent girl. If she didn’t refuse that man, it’s possible she mistook him for you.”
Andrew’s expression hardened, his voice laced with cold mockery. “So, she schemed to sleep with me by taking advantage of my drunken state, and now it’s somehow my fault?”
Dora couldn’t find anything to say. Inside, she was fuming at Sarai and Courtney, cursing them over and over. She’d never met such clueless people as Courtney, who couldn’t even identify the man she’d slept with.
