Sensing her hesitation, the family quickly retreated. “If you’re not comfortable with it, we can drop the idea.” Isabella sighed in relief, feeling the tension ease from her shoulders.
Glenn gave her a reassuring smile. “I doubt Eliza will cause any more trouble, and I’m confident no one will dare to harm you now.”
Isabella nodded, a soft smile playing on her lips.
As they continued their dinner, Elaine arrived home. She had taken a private plane the moment she learned Isabella was safe and back at home. The Patton family had their own private airport, but they rarely used it to keep a low profile.
As Elaine stepped out of the car, she unexpectedly found herself face-to-face with a visitor—Sarai, who had come to see Glenn.
Sarai glared at Elaine with fiery hatred, her eyes sharp and cold. Elaine, normally gentle but now stirred by anger, replied with a biting smile, “How do you even have time to be here? Shouldn’t you be at the police station checking on Rowan?”
Sarai’s face darkened instantly. She felt an urge to lunge at Elaine and slap her, but she held back and instead walked inside the villa.
Elaine frowned. Sarai had the nerve to show up here to see Glenn after everything that had happened?
“Stop right there!” Elaine’s voice cut through the air with irritation. “How do you still have the nerve to show up at my home now? You’re not welcome!”
“Do you think you are in charge of the family?” Sarai sneered, continuing inside.
Elaine’s anger flared. She followed Sarai, grabbed her arm, and shoved her forcefully. “Get out! With all the disgraceful things your family has done, you still have the audacity to show up here? Leave!”
“You’re the one who should leave! If it hadn’t been for your family, we wouldn’t have ended up in this situation!” Sarai shot back, her own rage evident as she grabbed Elaine’s hair, and they began to fight.
The commotion drew attention, and Glenn rushed out, immediately pushing Sarai away and shielding Elaine in his arms.
Sarai nearly toppled over, her disheveled hair falling across her face and making her look utterly pitiful. She glanced at Elaine, who was being protected by Glenn, and suddenly burst into laughter. “Elaine, feeling pretty smug, aren’t you? You never cared about studying and only played around when you were a child, yet you ended up with the most outstanding man in Gemond! What does that make me, despite all my efforts?”
Elaine scowled at Sarai. “What are you trying to say?”
Glenn’s voice was icy. “My wife is the most exceptional person in the world, Sarai. Since you’re here, we might as well settle the score.”
From the doorway, Isabella stepped forward, looking down at Sarai. “Courtney and Eliza plotted against me together, but I haven’t even told the police about Courtney’s involvement yet. Imagine what would happen to her if I did.”
Sarai’s face drained of color. “You’re talking nonsense. Courtney didn’t conspire with Eliza!”
“Oh, really?” Isabella’s sneer was sharp. “Fortunately, I have evidence.”
Sarai’s face turned ashen as she faced the family. “You’ve driven us to this point. Are you satisfied now? Is it only when we’re completely destroyed that you’ll be happy?” she yelled, tears streaming down her face as she turned to Glenn. “Glenn, if your father knew how you’ve treated your brother, he wouldn’t stand for it!”
“If my father knew, he would deal with him severely,” Glenn replied, his tone cold and unfeeling.
Sarai’s anger and defiance flared. “If you hadn’t cut off our dividend, Rowan wouldn’t have done those things. He’s your only brother. Why don’t you care about him?”
Isabella replied, “You think others should just put up with him when he’s in the wrong? Let me ask you—does your entire family think you should be spoiled?”
Sarai glared at Isabella, still unwilling to acknowledge her fault. “We had already given up the Patton Group. What more did you want?”
“Rowan could have tried to take over the Patton Group if he were capable,” Isabella said.
Sarai’s fury intensified. She felt like she could explode at any moment.
Glenn said icily, “Sarai, stop this madness. If you have time to argue, you should be reflecting on your actions!”
“Glenn, are you really going to abandon Rowan?” Sarai asked.
“The law will take care of it,” Glenn replied coldly.
Sarai felt a wave of dizziness, her frustration nearly overwhelming her. Not only had they failed to seize the Patton Group, but now they were mired in even deeper trouble. How was that fair?
Sarai’s voice dripped with bitterness. “If you don’t help him, I’ll find someone to remarry me! You’ll be the one responsible for driving your brother to his doom!”
Was Sarai really threatening them now?
“Really?” Isabella asked. “You might want to reconsider. Courtney will have a criminal record. Who would want to have a stepdaughter like that?”
“How dare you!” Sarai’s face flushed with rage. Confronted with this family, she was at a loss for words for a moment. Her hatred boiled over. “Glenn, you’ll regret this!” she spat before storming off.
“She’s completely lost it!” Dane muttered.
Glenn checked to make sure Elaine was okay, but Elaine quickly moved to hug Isabella. “My dear, are you alright?”
“I’m fine, Mom,” Isabella said, her previously sharp demeanor softening as she looked down with obedience.
“Sweetheart.” Elaine couldn’t contain her tears any longer, overcome with the joy of reuniting with her daughter. The news of Isabella’s passing had left her feeling so devastated that she had contemplated ending her own life.
“We are having dinner. Mom, have you had dinner yet?” Isabella asked gently.
“Not yet.”
“Then let’s have dinner together,” Isabella said, guiding Elaine into the house.
The family was reunited once more.
Meanwhile, Waylon, who was abroad, learned that Isabella was safe and urgently called Dane. Dane answered with irritation, “We’re having dinner. Please don’t disturb us.”
“Put me on speaker!” Waylon insisted eagerly. “I want to join you all for dinner!”
Dane imagined the scene and found it rather absurd. He ended the call with a sigh. Following the hearty meal, Isabella and Andrew stayed at the villa, relaxing until bedtime. As they were about to leave, Isabella noticed the sadness in Glenn’s eyes, as if something was troubling him. She approached him and whispered, “Dad, maybe you should have a word with Uncle.”
Glenn had the same thought but hesitated, fearing Rowan’s pleading might lead him to let go of Courtney. Isabella looked at Glenn and said, “Courtney acted this way because Rowan didn’t raise her properly. Eliza, the main culprit in this issue, has been punished. Courtney hasn’t faced punishment yet, but with her father in prison, she will definitely be scorned. Isn’t that a form of punishment for her? If she acts out again, I’ll report to the police that she conspired with Eliza. I’m confident that this will make Courtney think twice before causing any more trouble, bringing us some peace. If we go straight to the police, Sarai will be on our doorstep daily, and Rowan might come to resent us. It’s better to let them stew in their own mess.”
Glenn was taken aback by how thorough Isabella’s analysis was. Her insight was far beyond her peers, showing a depth of wisdom that was more typical of someone much older. Glenn felt a surge of pride for his daughter. “Isabella, you’re truly exceptional. You’re going to achieve great things in the future.”
Smiling, Isabella replied, “Of course, I won’t turn out badly with parents like you and Mom.”
Glenn smiled and gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. His anxiety eased instantly.
“If you decide to go to the police station, I’ll come with you,” Isabella said.
“Alright,” Glenn nodded.
The following day, after the morning rain, the sky cleared, and the fresh air made everyone who breathed it feel refreshed. Isabella and Glenn headed to the police station together. After they completed their statements with the police, Glenn went to meet Rowan.
When they met, Glenn noticed that Rowan looked worn out, but he remained calm. Rowan gave a bitter smile. “Glenn, I’ve brought this on myself. I should have realized that the password being the anniversary of Father’s death was a red flag, but I ignored it. I wanted my family to have a good life too badly. But it’s clear I’m not as capable as you. I finally understood why Father left the company to you.”
Glenn replied coolly, “At least you confessed at the last moment, which shows you’re not completely foolish. Father entrusted the company to me because I’d been studying business from a young age. He offered you money because he knew you were better suited for the art world. He was so perceptive; he understood us well. His plans were meant to benefit us. We managed well for years, but things started to unravel once we reconnected.”
Rowan seemed lost in thought. “Yes, that’s what Father intended…” Tears welled up at the corners of his eyes. “I always felt like Father favored you. But he was actually kind to both of us.”
“Even if you don’t hold shares in the company, I’ve made sure you get an annual dividend. This was also part of Father’s wish before he passed away.”
Rowan’s distress deepened when he heard this. He struck himself on the head and lamented, “I’m so foolish! Glenn, I’ve been truly wrong!” His life had been a living torment lately. It wasn’t just the physical torment; the mental pressure was just as relentless and crushing. He couldn’t understand how he could do those things.
Glenn observed Rowan and sighed. He reflected on his own shortcomings as a big brother; perhaps if he had guided Rowan better, things might have turned out differently. “Do you know who was behind Isabella’s ‘death?'” Glenn asked.
“Isn’t it Eliza from the Chapman family?” Rowan questioned, puzzled by Glenn’s inquiry.
“Yes,” Glenn confirmed. “But she hadn’t been in touch with Isabella for a long time, and she didn’t know where Isabella lived. Why would she suddenly track her down and try to kill her?”
Rowan’s heart sank as he suddenly pieced something together from his brother’s words. “No, that can’t be,” Rowan said, his face turning pale as he shook his head. “It’s impossible!”
“You’ve figured it out, haven’t you? It’s Courtney,” Glenn said with a cold edge to his voice.
The thought of Courtney and Eliza plotting to murder Isabella was too much to bear for Rowan. He felt as if he might lose consciousness. He knew Courtney was jealous of Isabella, but he never imagined she’d resort to murder. Yet Courtney had increasingly seemed like a stranger to him.
Rowan sank to his knees before Glenn, tears streaming as he sobbed. “Glenn, I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault. I failed to raise my daughter properly. Courtney has been exceptionally gifted since childhood, which gave her a sense of superiority and made her believe she was the best. She never realized there are always others who excel more until she met Isabella. Her jealousy drove her to go too far with Isabella!”
“Yes, Courtney has gone too far,” Glenn said.
