“Moreover, it’s possible someone from outside did this. If Chapman Group had been determined enough to steal our files, they might have hired someone to break in, maybe even through an office window.”
The investigation proved to be incredibly challenging. “We must start the investigation immediately!” Glenn declared, slamming his hand on the table.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
After the meeting, Glenn dialed Jeffry.
Speaking calmly yet with a forceful undertone, he said, “I didn’t expect you to be this capable.”
Jeffry felt an inexplicable chill—Glenn’s commanding presence had intimidated many over the years.
Reminding himself that they were not the disadvantaged party, Jeffry retorted, “Mr. Patton, we are the victims here. You stole our blueprints. It’s outrageous! You owe us an explanation.”
“An explanation, is it? Then come to Ansport.” Glenn’s voice was cold and unyielding.
Jeffry’s face contorted with disbelief. “We’re the victims here, and you expect us to travel to Ansport? Shouldn’t you be coming to Gemond to discuss this?”
“You have ten hours to get here, or I won’t hesitate to take this to court,” Glenn declared, then abruptly hung up.
As Jeffry put down the phone, Eliza and Phyllis, who had been waiting nearby, immediately approached him. “What happened?” Eliza asked anxiously.
Jeffry’s face was dark with frustration. “I didn’t expect Glenn to be so confident, even at this stage. He’s demanding we go to Ansport or face legal action!” Eliza’s brow furrowed as she considered the situation.
“Then let’s go. Our goal is to take over Patton Group. If Glenn is willing to hand it over without a fight, we can avoid a lengthy lawsuit.”
Jeffry nodded in agreement. “Alright. We’ll head to Ansport.”
The family quickly set off for Ansport.
In Ansport, the two parties arranged to meet in a private room at a hotel.
Jeffry deliberately adopted a cold and arrogant demeanor, hoping to dominate the negotiations. However, the moment Glenn and Rowan entered the room, the atmosphere shifted palpably.
Glenn’s indifferent gaze swept over the Chapman family, and Jeffry’s shoulders tensed instinctively; Glenn’s aura was formidable, and it was clear that his confidence was unshakable.
This was Rowan’s first encounter with the Chapman family. He wasn’t sure why Glenn had insisted on bringing him along and felt an uneasy knot in his stomach.
Glenn took his seat across from the Chapman family and began sipping his coffee leisurely.
Jeffry waited for Glenn to speak, but the prolonged silence made him increasingly uncomfortable.
“Mr. Patton, what’s the meaning of calling us here and then staying silent?” Jeffry frowned, clearly irritated. “Are you playing games with us?”
“Are we the ones playing games?” Glenn replied calmly. Rowan, observing from the side, noted Glenn’s composed demeanor with surprise. Even under pressure, Glenn remained unfazed, which was impressive and unnerving.
Jeffry’s heart skipped a beat, but he tried to maintain his angry facade. “Glenn, what do you mean? You’ve plagiarized our work, causing us significant losses, and now our project is stalled. And you accuse us of playing games? What’s your plan to resolve this issue?”
“How do you intend to deal with this?” Glenn retorted.
Jeffry had been expecting this exact question. He answered, “If I take you to court, the fines will be so steep that you won’t be able to cover them, and the Patton Group will be forced into bankruptcy. We’ve raised Isabella, and because of that, I’m offering you a way out. Just transfer the Patton Group to me.”
Glenn snorted dismissively.
Jeffry felt insulted. “What’s that supposed to mean? I’m trying to help you here! The Patton Group will survive, and who knows, maybe someday I will return it to you and let you take the reins again!”
He assumed that if he were in Glenn’s shoes, he would definitely accept these terms.
“And what if I refuse?” Glenn inquired.
“If you don’t agree, then we’ll be seeing each other in court!” Jeffry declared with arrogance, convinced Glenn wouldn’t actually choose that path. After all, anyone with half a brain would know what choice to make here.
Glenn, however, stayed cool, casually sipping his coffee, which only made Jeffry feel foolish. The more Jeffry pondered, the more it irritated him. Glenn was still acting all high and mighty, even with everything falling apart.
“Mr. Patton, have you made a decision?” Jeffry pressed, his patience wearing thin.
“I’ll let you know in a day,” Glenn responded.
“Alright,” Jeffry said, finally content with the response. He wasn’t concerned about the delay; he was sure of the outcome. He even managed a smile. “Mr. Patton, order whatever you want. After today, you might not get another meal like this.”
Seeing Jeffry’s smug grin, Glenn replied flatly, “No, thanks. You enjoy the meal.”
With that, he and Rowan got up and left.
On their way to the car, neither of them spoke. Rowan wanted to say something, but caught by the intensity of Glenn’s profile, he couldn’t find the words. Once they were in the car, Glenn broke the silence first. “What do you think our next move should be?”
Rowan wiped the sweat from his brow, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on him. Was it his own guilty conscience making him feel this way? But in the current situation, he couldn’t afford to let guilt get the better of him.
“I think the top priority is to save the Patton Group,” Rowan said, his face showing his distress as he looked at Glenn. “I know it’s tough on you, Glenn, but if the Patton Group goes under, our father will never forgive us. As long as the company is still around, we’ll have a chance to reclaim it eventually.”
“Really? So you think we should just throw in the towel?” Glenn asked calmly, his eyes locked on Rowan.
Despite the lack of visible emotion in Glenn’s eyes, Rowan felt a sudden chill, as if every part of him had been laid bare. He broke out in a cold sweat, overwhelmed by the sensation of being fully exposed. He couldn’t stop berating himself for being so useless. He couldn’t even stand up to Glenn’s stare.
“There’s no alternative at the moment. If there was another option, no one would willingly give up the company. This mess is partly because of you. I understand you’re heartbroken over Isabella’s passing, but now we’re also facing the loss of the company.” Rowan shifted the topic deliberately.
Glenn continued to fix his gaze on him.
Rowan soon bowed his head. “I understand that Isabella was your daughter, and it’s only natural for you to be upset. But our opponents have seized this opportunity to hit us hard. Glenn, we’re in a difficult position with no evidence to back up our defense. As hard as it might be, we need to choose one of the options Jeffry put on the table.”
“Then why don’t you try finding the person who broke into my office?” Glenn’s look was piercing.
Rowan couldn’t hold Glenn’s gaze. “We’ve been looking into this for a long time with no leads.”
“Rowan!” Glenn’s tone turned serious. “Our father always knew you weren’t driven by fame or money, and he was relieved we didn’t become like other rich families where brothers turn against each other.”
“I— I know. Why are you mentioning this now?”
“Because I know the truth, Rowan,” Glenn said firmly. “You might seem indifferent to fame and money, but you have pride, don’t you? That’s why you wanted to be part of the company, to prove your worth.”
Rowan shivered slightly. Each word from Glenn hit him deeply. Glenn, who rarely talked with him, seemed to understand him well.
“What are you getting at?” Rowan’s throat felt parched.
“This is your moment to show what you’re made of,” Glenn said, his gaze steady. “If you manage this well, I’ll restore your dividend. You have one day, Rowan. Think it through.”
Rowan stayed silent, his mind blank.
He barely remembered how he made it home.
“Rowan, Rowan! Darling!” Sarai’s voice cut through his haze. He snapped back to reality, his eyes still clouded with confusion as he finally turned his gaze toward her.
Sarai furrowed her brow as she looked at Rowan. “Darling, what was on your mind? You seemed lost in thought.”
“Oh, nothing. What’s the matter?” Rowan replied.
Sarai scrutinized his pale face with a hint of suspicion. “I just wanted to ask about our deal with the Chapman family. Did Glenn agree to transfer the company?”
“Well, he wants me to deal with this issue,” Rowan said, his face growing even paler. “Do you think Glenn knows it was my doing?”
Sarai’s frustration grew at Rowan’s pathetic state. “You’re really not helping, Rowan. Your brother is testing you. He might be testing everyone, and you’re the most suspicious. It’s no surprise he’s been in business for so long; he’s incredibly clever. You just can’t compete with him.”
Rowan suddenly understood. “So that’s what’s going on.”
“Rowan, you need to stick with our plan,” Sarai said, holding his hand. “Your brother is testing you. You’re innocent. You don’t know anything. It’s all his fault. If he hadn’t been so devastated by Isabella’s death, the documents wouldn’t have been lost.” Sarai’s words worked like a spell on Rowan.
He kept repeating, “It’s Glenn’s fault. It’s Glenn’s fault.” Seeing Rowan’s reaction, Sarai felt a sense of satisfaction. “Yes, it’s definitely your brother’s fault. Rowan, you’re exhausted. You need to get some rest.”
She guided Rowan to the room where he could rest.
