Andrew’s expression remained calm. “I have some things to take care of here.”
As the two men stood side by side, their commanding presence immediately drew the attention of many women in the room, who whispered in admiration.
“They’re both so handsome! How could anyone choose between Mr. Patton and Mr. Klein?”
“They’re way out of our league, but it’s fun to watch!”
“Isabella seems to have captured both of their attention. She’s so lucky.”
Josie also watched them, her eyes filled with admiration for Dane. But her thoughts quickly returned to Kristine, whose face had gone pale. Kristine used to be the one standing beside the two most admired men in the room, but now… it was Isabella.
How had everything changed so drastically?
Kristine’s grip on her wine glass tightened a visible sign of her mounting irritation. As Josie gazed adoringly at Dane, Kristine’s irritation mounted, but she quickly softened her expression, her eyes calculating. “Josie, it’s been too long since you stayed over at my place. Why don’t you come over tonight?”
Josie’s eyes sparkled with excitement, eager to please. “Absolutely! I’d love to!”
Meanwhile, Dane’s focus shifted to Andrew, his words deliberate and sharp. “You’ve been looking out for Isabella on Waylon’s behalf, right? Well, I’m back now. You can step back; I’ve got it from here.”
Andrew’s gaze briefly hardened before his deep voice cut through the tension. “It’s fine. Waylon’s sister is my sister as well.”
Dane clenched his jaw, silently frustrated. As if she needed another brother—she already had three. Why was Andrew hovering so much?
Isabella sensed the brewing tension between the two men and, feeling slightly uncomfortable, excused herself. She made her way to Susan, seeking the comfort of a friend who wouldn’t complicate things.
Dane, still watching Andrew closely, pressed on. “Just to be clear, the marriage agreement between our families is now void, right? I’ll talk to Kristine about it later.”
Andrew’s gaze didn’t waver. “I’ve always regarded Kristine as a sister. But my family is keen on an alliance with yours. Lately, I’ve grown quite close to Isabella, and I’m willing to wait for her decision.”
Dane’s eyes darkened with anger. This jerk! Making moves on his sister? Not happening.
“Sorry, but Isabella is still young. She isn’t considering anything like that right now, right?” Dane said, turning to get her agreement—only to find she was completely engrossed in conversation with Susan at the buffet.
A mix of exasperation and affection washed over him. Isabella… completely unaware of the storm brewing around her.
Andrew, noticing the shift in Dane’s tone, realized this wouldn’t be an easy path. “Perhaps we should shift our focus back to the collaboration,” Andrew suggested, hoping to avoid further personal conflict.
Dane sighed and nodded. Business first—personal matters could wait.
Meanwhile, Isabella and Susan were enjoying their conversation, unaware of the tension between Andrew and Dane.
“I almost dragged you into a mess today, Susan,” Isabella murmured, a hint of guilt in her voice.
Susan brushed it off with a smile. “With you by my side, I’m always in good hands.”
She leaned in closer and whispered, “But… your sister doesn’t seem very kind-hearted. Be careful around her.”
Isabella nodded. “I will.”
Just then, a waiter brought over a special package, and Susan’s eyes widened as she unwrapped it. Inside were opulent gifts—Chanel perfume, a designer handbag, and premium skincare products. But what took her breath away was a limited-edition Cavo necklace.
“Is this… real? This is the Cavo necklace I’ve only seen in magazines!” Susan exclaimed.
Isabella smiled, pleased by her reaction. “Yes, it’s all for you. And here’s another gift for Giana.” She handed Susan a second package, her eyes twinkling with warmth.
Susan was overwhelmed by her friend’s thoughtfulness. “I never imagined my first high-end necklace would come from you! Looks like I’ll be relying on you for more surprises in the future.”
Isabella chuckled. “You’re always welcome at my place.”
Their laughter blended into the lively ambiance of the banquet.
Not far off, Dane and Andrew had concluded their conversation, and Dane overheard the end of Isabella and Susan’s exchange. “There’s plenty of room at our home,” Dane said warmly, joining them. “You’re a friend of Isabella, so you’re welcome to stay with us.”
Susan blushed slightly at Dane’s kind offer, but Isabella squeezed her hand gently. “Don’t be shy. My parents are very welcoming.”
Encouraged by their hospitality, Susan nodded. “Okay, I’d love to.”
She was eager to see how Isabella was settling into her new home and wanted to ensure her friend was being treated well. The warmth and openness of the Patton family stood in stark contrast to the cold, unwelcoming atmosphere she had felt around the Chapmans.
Though the banquet was still in full swing, Susan decided to head home briefly to change. Isabella offered her some clothing, but Susan, not wanting to impose further, opted to fetch her own.
Isabella arranged for a driver to take Susan home. As Susan left the venue, her eyes caught a glimpse of a familiar figure across the street, stirring an unsettling sense of recognition.
Susan widened her eyes, momentarily doubting her vision. Was that Giana? The very Giana who had told her she was too busy with work? But there she was, standing at the entrance of the hotel, mingling with a well-dressed crowd. And among them stood Eliza.
Susan didn’t know Eliza personally, but they had attended the same high school. Eliza was the true heiress of the Chapman family, and Susan had no intention of attending her recent welcome banquet. Yet here was Giana, who had claimed to have other plans, in Eliza’s circle.
Susan’s confusion grew, but she realized this was an opportunity to give Giana the gift Isabella had prepared for her. Their interactions had become rare, and Susan didn’t know when she’d see her again.
“Could you please stop the car?” she asked the driver.
As Susan approached, she hesitated, unsure whether calling out to Giana would draw too much attention. Instead, she decided to dial her number. From a safe distance, Susan watched as Giana checked her phone, glanced at the screen, and then slipped it back into her purse without answering.
Disappointment flickered through Susan, but she decided to try again. She needed to hand over Isabella’s gift.
Meanwhile, Eliza and her friends were engaged in light-hearted conversation.
“Eliza, I’m so jealous!” one of the girls gushed. “You wear Versace like it was designed just for you. And your jewelry— it must cost a fortune!”
Eliza brushed off the compliment with a graceful smile. “It’s nothing. My mom loves to spoil me with nice things. She even tried to get the limited-edition diamond necklace from Cavo, but it was already sold out.”
At the mention of the necklace, Giana’s expression flickered. She knew exactly which piece Eliza was talking about, and it was well out of her reach at 1.5 million dollars. The irony wasn’t lost on her—Eliza could buy such luxuries without a second thought.
Giana felt a twinge of bitterness. Isabella and I have known each other for years, yet she’s never given me anything of value. Meanwhile, I’ve just become friends with Eliza, and I’ve already received more from her.
Across the street, Susan dialed Giana’s number again. This time, Giana picked up, her tone sharp with impatience. “What is it? I can’t talk right now!”
“I’m right behind you,” Susan said, trying to stay composed despite Giana’s curt tone.
Giana turned, surprised. “Susan? What are you doing here?”
“I just came from Isabella’s welcome banquet,” Susan explained, forcing a smile. “She prepared a special gift for you, and I wanted to make sure you got it.”
“A gift?” Giana asked, her tone indifferent. She could already imagine it—something simple, likely not worth her time. What could Isabella, the girl from the countryside, possibly have to offer?
Before Giana could respond, Eliza noticed Susan. “Hey, look! It’s Susan! What’s that she’s holding?”
Giana hesitated, feeling Eliza’s eyes on her. “It’s nothing,” she said dismissively. “Just a gift from Isabella.”
Eliza’s interest piqued. “A gift from Isabella? How thoughtful of her! You should open it. She must have put a lot of care into it.”
The other women snickered. “Oh, this should be good. Isabella had a welcome banquet? That’s rich. I bet there’s nothing but some rustic knick-knacks in there.”
Eliza, always good at masking her condescension, smiled sweetly. “Still, it’s nice of her. Let’s see what she picked out for you. Maybe we’ll find some hidden gems from the countryside.”
Giana’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment as the women around her giggled. Feeling trapped, she grabbed the bag from Susan, her movements stiff. “Thanks. I’ll take it from here.”
“You can go now,” Giana added, not even looking at Susan.
Susan hesitated, feeling the sting of Giana’s coldness, but eventually nodded and turned to leave. As she walked away, Eliza’s voice reached her ears.
“Wait a minute, Giana,” Eliza said with a smirk. “We haven’t seen what Isabella sent you. Let’s open it together. Who knows? Maybe there’s a surprise inside!”
Another woman chimed in. “Yes, let’s see! We could all use a good laugh.”
Giana’s frustration simmered as she opened the bag, bracing herself for the mocking comments from Eliza’s group. Isabella, what were you thinking? She was about to be humiliated because of this gift.
With trembling fingers, Giana pulled out the first item. The women gathered closer, eager to see.
