The Keep was magnificent. The black stone made the lines of silver and gold stand out. Each stone was riddled with the precious metal. The roof was pure silver. The reflection that they had all seen from leagues away was the roof reflecting the sun back at them. The Keep looked small in comparison to the others Araiya had been to. There was a glass structure to the side of the Keep, taking up the rest of the cliff face.
The Keep stood alone on a small peninsula off the coast of a forest. The land jutted out in a pointed cliff face until you reach where the Keep stood. Then the land flared out with grounds barely wide enough for the structures on it.
The land looked like there was a fragile balance taking place. The Keep balanced on the knifes edge, overlooking the sea. If one stone fell out of place, then entire structure would topple down into the unforgiving ocean below. Waves smashed into the cliffs on either side, creating a mist that drifted around dampening their clothes.
The dragons drifted lower and lower, and Araiya spotted a lone man by the Keep. He walked down the path that led to a staircase cut into the cliff face. The three dragons circled and realized very quickly that the only way up was the stairs.
They flew down on to the beach below the Keep. Araiya unbuckled her legs and dropped to the sands. Her legs were wobbly and sore from the long ride. The rest of her party had shifted and were dividing up the bags when the man made it to the bottom of the staircase.
Everyone froze as the man slowly walked closer. Talon helped Araiya to her feet and pushed her behind him and the rest of the men. The three Enforcers took the lead, blocking Talon and Araiya behind them.
But Araiya had already seen the face of the man slowly walking forward with his hands outstretched in peace. She had already caught the smirk hidden under the scruff of an unkept beard.
The men called out for the new comer to stop where he was, and that man paused. Confusion had the man tilting his head at the group on the beach but he waited. Once the men were sure he wouldn’t move they turned away from him and started to discuss their options. None had planned for someone being here.
Araiya grew bored and stuck her head out from behind her men and a smile alighted the new man’s face and he winked. Araiya decided right then to make her move and she ran out from behind the rest. She dodged River’s hands when he tried to snatch her back, and then she created a field to forced them to wait while she approached the man.
The man walked closer and stuck his hands into his belt. He tried to look unbothered by the growling dragons behind Araiya but just waited for Araiya to step closer. “Hello, mate.” The man’s smile took her breath away.
Araiya stopped close to the man and looked up at his face. “Hello, Callin.”
