“An Enforcer?” Mac questioned. “Any one of us?”

“Correct, hotshot. Any one of you would have worked. But I chose you, Zeph. You were my choice. You were looking for a mate, tired and disappointed cycle after cycle that your mate never came to be. So I decided I could be that mate for you. Your loneliness called to me, your soul to mine.”

“How-“

“He watched us didn’t he?” River cut in from his spot on the beach. Araiya sent up a prayer in thanks now that he was awake.

“You knew which one of us to target. You didn’t select Zephyr because he called to you. You chose to go after Zephyr because you were told to. You came to Air first. You presented to me after I called the mate bond. You knew I was close with Zeph. That if you had to learn the element, he would teach you because he was my brother.” Talon called Shavon out.

“Come now-“

“This was all planned years before you were Chosen wasn’t it? Create a fake bond with me, ask for lessons in Air from Zephyr. Turn him for your true master. You never loved me, you never loved Zeph, it was all for him.”

Shavon eyes filled with tears and she turned to stare at Zeph. “Don’t believe him, I love you.”

Zeph was standing there, but his hand holding the knife was dropping. “Do you?” Araiya watched on as both Talon and Zephyr looked like they were reliving every moment with Shavon. Analyzing her actions, her emotions, her love.

Shavon walked up to both men and cupped Zephyrs face. “You question my love for you? All because they throw back a few words. Is our love so conditional?”

“No, of course not. You know I love you.” Zeph leaned closer to Shavon and kissed her. Their kiss was long, and Zeph shuddered as Shavon continued to kiss him. Talon was trying his best to lean away from the pair, but he couldn’t move away far enough.

He was still there when Zephyr shuddered again as Shavon kissed him deeper. Everyone was almost paused, watching their display of love. River and Mac looked away, disgusted by the display but Araiya watched. Terran watched.

They both watched because they realized something was wrong. Talon’s white, blond hair that was plastered against Zephyrs chest started turning red. Blood red. But it wasn’t until a drop landed on his cheek did he realize that something was seriously wrong.

“Zeph?” Talon tipped his head back as blood poured down onto him. “ZEPH!”

“Talon, move.” Araiya had thankfully had Airyn remove Air holding her onto the ground while everyone was talking. Shavon pulled back from the kiss and turned to face everyone else with blood covering her chest.

“Too bad Zeph was too stupid to realize that Talon was right.” Shavon wrapped her hand around the hilt of the knife she had driven up into Zephyrs throat and pulled it out sideways. Zeph’s blood arched from his throat as he dropped and wrapped a hand over the slice, trying his hardest to Keep his life blood in his body.

Shavon turned on Talon and slashed down on him, where he was still kneeling.

Time froze.

Everything froze.

Everything was silent.

Until the first gurgle came. Then a cough. Blood poured on to the sand and everything snapped back in to movement. Everyone ran.

River stumbled his way over to Zeph just as Terran and Mac stumbled to his other side. Talon dropped onto his hands and knees, tears pouring from his eye. He pounded the sand over and over and he just screamed. But there was no changing this outcome.

Shavon stood still, staring down at the sword thrust through her chest, coughing up blood and darker fluids. “You were on the ground.”

“I was, but I won’t lose anyone else to your hand Shavon.” Araiya pulled the sword from her. She wiped the blade on her pants before sheathing it.

“Where?” Shavon’s eyes cast down to the sword and back up to Araiya. Her hands placed over the wound.

“The Goddess gave me this, to protect myself. I used it to protect him.”

“You will regret this.” Shavon struggled to stay standing. She stumbled her way over to a tree and held on to the trunk as everyone else crowded around Zeph.

“I doubt it.” Araiya helped Talon to his feet and they both turned to the others.

“Stay with us.” Mac and Terran held Zephyr’s hands as River worked on healing the damage to his neck.

“We just got you back, you can’t give up now. We have our mate. Please brother.” Terran bent over Zeph’s dying form and prayed. Prayed to his mother, to the Goddess, to her consort. Anyone willing to hear his plea, he sent it. “River…”

“It won’t heal. It’s just blackness that keeps spreading from the wound.” River pushed more power into his fallen brother, who silently cried while staring up at Araiya.

Talon kneeled down at Zeph’s feet. “You can’t stop fighting Zeph. We haven’t had time to repair anything. You deserve forgiveness.”

Araiya whispered something that had Zephyr nodding and closing his eyes. The four men kneeling on the ground looked up at her. “What did you say, lamb?”

“You can’t heal it. The dagger she used, was bound in darkness. It is a poisoning of the soul. He originally created it for Al’ta Moir, but he perfected it since. You won’t be able to save him. No matter how much power you push into him, it won’t do any good.” Zeph turned back and clutched at his throat. “Stop focusing on the blackness, and heal the damage.”
