Yes, young mother. Close your eyes and think of deep water. Athan has been tracking you and is behind you. The ruler of the deep doesn’t like to be disturbed but I am hopeful she will accept it this time.
Can’t you tell her?
No. She has been ruler there for longer than I have been here. She was the first.
The first?
The first child of Water. My love created her alone, with the Goddess’s help. Before the Elementals were created. You should be able to see in the dark water now, Young Mother. Athan is there. Find and protect my son.
Warryn left her as Araiya opened her eyes to find herself staring directly into the open mouth of a giant shark. She screamed. Air rushing from her lungs, and she took her next deep breath before she realized she didn’t have air around her. She quickly wrapped air around her and coughed out the water.
Athan circled the choking woman, and waited patiently as she almost killed herself in her own stupidity. She felt Water pull from her lungs as she vomited it out. The water around her darkened as she caught her breath.
She finally grabbed his fin and they took off deeper in the water. She held on as he dove, but something in the deep hit them and Athan when spiraling away. She floated in the deep water and turned around looking for River’s body.
She ignored the flash of scales far off as she started to swim toward River. She dove deeper and deeper all while ignoring the flash of light, or scale that was obviously circling her. Athan was also trying to reach River but he kept being brushed or hit back.
She knew that the dragons above were battling and she was worried for her mates. All of them, but she knew that only she could reach River down here.
The others could protect Talon, River only had her.
She had almost reached River as he continued to drift further away when the flash of scales was so close she had to turn and what Araiya saw froze her blood and breath in her chest.
A looming, giant head emerged from the deep. The face reminded her of a dragon but it was a hundred timed larger. The body of the Water dragon undiluted behind the creature and Araiya was terrified, but River needed her.
So she took a deep breath and faced the giant eyes that looked down at her.
Who are you and why is my dear brother in my kingdom? He knows he is forbidden.
My name is Araiya. River is my mate. He is only here because I needed him. We have to get to Metal’s Keep.
Oh, the Young Mother has finally returned. I heard your call.
Araiya turned in the water as the giantess circled her.
The Elements spoke about you for lifetimes. For someone so strong you’re quite small.
The behemoth swam closer.
I don’t think any can compare to your power and size. You’re the queen of the oceans, and I am just a simple Chosen.
Not such a simple Chosen, I think. Has my brother treated you well as his mate?
He has.
Smart man. You called for me and I am willing to help you in your quest. I am even willing to allow my brother to live for this indiscretion and lift his banishment from the Deep.
The giantess’s body twirled behind her, setting off her scales.
For a price.
What do I have to do? How can you help me? What do you mean I called for you? What are you? Who are you?
So many questions, young one. How old are you, anyways?
Twenty-one, twenty-two soon.
Twenty-one life times, you should be over this inquisitiveness, young one.
Not life times, twenty-one season cycles. I have been alive for twenty-one sun cycles.
Not even one lifetime, hmmm, that is explanation enough. Let us start with the easy questions. When you dove off the cliff in the shallows, while meeting the elemental, you sent out a call. A call to arms. Like my brother here, you are strong enough to warrant a familiar. Water and Fire are different from the other Elements. While you walk on land, fly in the air, you cannot live in the sea. You would run out of air. You cannot dive deep into Fire; you would eventually burn up. The Elements are too destructive.
Like earlier, when I breathed in the water.
Exactly. These two Elements were given familiars, some creature that lives in the element, who can watch it for you. Our mother gave Athan to my brother when he was a babe. They have grown together.
