I’ve been working on a camouflage while flying. Watch.
Talon flew past them and a little higher.
Yeah…. I see nothing
. Mac started.
Wait, you impatient asshole. First, I have to harden the air all around me, and then I use the sunlight to refract, and it reflects like a mirror.
From one second to the next, he was gone.
Fuck!
Now that will come in handy. How many people know about this new skill?
River asked.
No one. I started to work on it when Shavon was training with Zeph, and I was planning on tell her and showing every Air dragon once I had perfected it.
That’s amazing, Talon.
Terran flew faster trying to see a flaw.
Hurry and shield all of us, take power from Airyn if he allows. We are getting close.
River turned back to the flicker in air.
Talon rejoined the group and he confirmed with a strained voice that it was done. Now that they were invisible, instead of flying high, they could go lower.
I see the start of the sand stone arch. Let’s…
River whipped his head back and the sadness in his eyes sent a panic through the group.
What is it, is she dead? I didn’t feel the bond snap.
Mac shifted, trying to see better.
She’s trying to fight out of the chain but that’s not-
He trailed off and looked back at Talon.
I am so sorry brother.
Everyone looked around until they all saw what River was apologizing for.
Zephyr was there, laughing and cajoling on as if their mate wasn’t fighting tooth and nail to get to the body that laid before her. Her screams became back ground noise for Talon though. Because in Zephyr’s arms, like she was meant to be there instead of dead on a floor where he last saw her, was his mate.
His mate was in the betrayer’s arms, and she was all smiles as if their best friend wasn’t struggling for her life not fifty feet away. As if he hadn’t held her while she took her last breath. As if he hadn’t felt her shatter the bond that tied them together when she supposedly past beyond the veil.
He went to roar his anguish but the world erupted into flames.
The shield held once Mac helped Talon strengthen it, and they landed and shifted next to their mate, who burned. Her flames turning everything to cinders close to her, except for the body that lay before her.
“Korine!” Araiya screamed as the world burned. She could give two fucks about anyone else here. Donal, Zeph, even fucking Shavon could burn, but Korine. Bright, beautiful, protective Korine was one light Araiya wouldn’t allow to burn away.
Araiya pushed the flames back as she stumbled over to her sister. She screamed for her to come back. She felt Korine’s spirit tremble inside of her chest, getting ready to depart this realm and Araiya would not, could not allow that to happen.
She dropped to her knees and kissed her sister’s forehead. “I forbid you leaving me, not now, not after everything. I finally know the truth now, and I have so much to make up for. So, you have to stay. Do you understand me?”
She ripped open her power and called down her bonds, and nearly jumped out of her skin when someone grabbed her shoulder. She looked, ready and willing to kill who ever grabbed her, and gasped in disbelief. “River?”
“Yes, lamb.”
“Is this real?”
“Yes lamb, we got you.”
