“Stay with me?”

“Of course. Sleep.” Korine petted her hair as she fell asleep. Just before Araiya had fallen into a deep slumber, she heard Korine whisper. “I will protect you this time.”

“I can’t believe Devlin would do this to you.

He loves you.” An unfamiliar voice rang out

as Araiya continued down the corridor.

“He used to love me, but when I found you, he was hurt. I thought it was just a phase. I thought he would understand it was the next step from the Goddess. But he turned resentful. I should have had only one mate, only him.” Soren’s voice was soft, but Araiya heard as she rounded the corner of the hallway and stumbled over the slightly lifted stone threshold. Araiya quickly adjusted and leaned against the wall as she watched this new memory unfold.

“Why was he resentful of me? He’s a dragon, for Goddess sake, and I am just a simple warrior from a small village in Water.” The handsome man waved his arms in front of his form. “Look at me Soren, truly look, what do you see? I am not someone to lose your life over. He has been your mate for over a thousands cycles. I am no one.” The man was stunning, yet familiar. He was tall, and strong, for a regular man. His white blonde hair reminded Araiya of Talon’s, but his eyes, his eyes were a deep blue like River’s. There was a depth there, like the ocean. His eyes were striking, memorable, familiar. But Araiya did not know this man.

“Jay, you are just as important as Devlin.”

“No, I’m not. Not to our family, not to your race, and definitely not to the Goddess.” Araiya watched as Soren held her hands out to the man and he kneeled next to her. He started to struggle with his words. “I am not worth your life. Bring him here, allow him to take my life. I would gladly give my life for yours. Please Starlight, do this for me. I won’t survive without you anyways.”

“Darling, my love, my rock. He betrayed us. He betrayed me, our children, and our family. He does not get to decide who I love or who I am with. Having multiple mates was always a possibility and he knew it. He had multiple lifetimes with me. And I have just found you. It is not fair that I allow him to dictate who I can be with. Who I was meant to love. The Goddess and her consort created our path long ago and Devlin knows that. He just doesn’t like it. He cannot make me choose him over you. I will not trade one for the other.”

“But we will all be lost. I will be lost. Please, Soren. Let me save you. He can reverse the poison.” Soren held her fingers to the man’s lips as she cut her eyes to Araiya. Her eyes softened, and her lips turned up.

“I have need of you Jay. A way to save what has been lost. A way to save our realm. Not Devlin, not the Enforcers. You. My heart, you will save this realm with me, from the damage he has done. I give my life in payment to save this realm, will you?”

“You know I have sworn myself to you and your bidding. But I…”

“No buts, no doubts. Do you trust the Goddess and her guidance?”

“You know I do.”

“Then will you help me, even if it means I will pass through the veil?”

“Soren…Please.” The man hung his head in defeat as his eyes filled. “I love you, my queen.”

“And I you, my king. Together we will save our realm, and then we will meet again beyond the veil. But the Goddess has a path, and I have one last mission for you before you join me. Jaylin, warrior king of Water, will you put aside your doubt, your sadness, your pain and help me one last time?” Soren’s face was filled with love as she cupped his face.

“Without hesitation.” He leaned in and kissed her before he rushed from the room.

Soren raised her arm and started to call out to Jay, before she paused. And then shook her head and covered her face and started to softly cry.

“Come here, Araiya. I have need of you.” Soren dropped her hands and motioned her to sit where Jay just left. Araiya made her way over and waited as Soren wiped away her tears. “Sorry, I know it is foolish, but I do not like hurting my mates.”

“I understand.” Araiya looked over her shoulder. “He seems devastated. He must truly love you.” She turned back. “I am sorry you both are dealing with this.”

Soren shrugged and smiled at Araiya. “You are a balm to my soul, so it is easier to bear. Did you have questions? I assume that is why you are here.”

“No, I just…I’m just confused.” Araiya wiped at her own face. “I am losing touch with what is real.”

“Why do you say that?”

“This, this can’t be real. This has to be a dream, right?”

“What do you think?”

“I think that I am losing my mind. I only started talking to my dreams once I was taken. Is this some way to cope with being tortured? Is this just my mind reaching out for anything other than pain? So I can pretend to feel loved before I die?”

“Slow down. Tell me what is going on, and I will try to give you advice. Even if you think is it just your mind.”

“I have dreams. Dreams of you. Dreams of my mates. Some feel so real that I swear it is them, and others… Others are the darkness pretending to be one of my mates. I can’t tell what is real, who is who. Are they ever actually Mac or River?”

“Well, Araiya, you know Spirit is special. Your dreams could be just dreams, or they could be dream walks.”

“How do I tell if it is real or not?”

“Do you remember your dreams?”

“Not really.”
