Araiya struggled to breathe. She pulled herself away from him. She leaned against the pole that she spent most of her days chained to and caught her breath. “You’re not Mac, are you?”
“Of course I am, love. Why would you even say that?” Mac reached for her as she leaned further away.
“Mac and I fought the first time we met. We didn’t hold each other. Who are you and why are you here?”
The smile that bloomed on the imposter’s face made Araiya shiver. It was evil. Pure evil. “You caught me, young mother. How fun.” The voice, she recognized that voice.
“You…”
“Ah yes, there is my smart girl. I was wondering how long it would take you to figure it out. Have you figured it out completely, love?”
“You’re the voice in my head. The darkness that attacked us in Fire. Why do you Keep coming for me?”
“At first, I just wanted to take you away from the Enforcers. I knew you were born into this realm because it created a ripple. But…well then, I saw you. You are a gorgeous little creature.” The Mac imposter gripped her chin. “You remind me so much of your mother. A new plan formed. I had Donal contact your step father to set up the marriage contract so I could steal you away. I was going to save you from Jon, but you had to go and enter the Choosing. Something I strictly forbid Jon to allow you to do. And here we are.”
“Let go of me.”
“I don’t think so.”
Araiya looked around for anything to help, but there was nothing. No Korine, no chain, no sound outside the tent. “This isn’t real, is it? It’s just another dream.”
“Ah, I was wondering when you were going to realize.” The laugh that came from the man gave her shivers. “You are stuck here, Araiya. In the real realm and even in your dreams. You won’t be leaving. Well not until I get there in the flesh. You’re lucky though love, I can’t be there yet. Until then, you will stay in the loving care of Donal. You will get to stick closely to your sister. Am I not generous?”
“This isn’t real,” Araiya whispered to herself. Her hope crumbling with every word. “This isn’t real, he isn’t Mac. You are not my mate.”
“Oh, sweet girl, I am.”
“What?”
The Mac imposter leaned into her. “I am your mate, or I should say, the closest thing you will ever get the chance of ever having. I may not be loving or sweet or even gentle. But you will be mine, and you will give me babes.” He kissed her, stopping the very breath in her lungs. He pulled away and smiled again. “You will give me everything I want, or you will die.”
Araiya yanked her face from his hands. “Then I guess I will die.” With that, Araiya slammed her forehead into the imposters nose. He reared back, roaring his pain, clutching his face. Black blood poured down through his fingers.
“You stupid fucking bitch.” He dropped his hands and smiled back at her. His face covered in his blood. “I will enjoy breaking you. Keep up your spirits until I get there.”
With those parting words, the dream started to disappear. Which meant Araiya was once again waking up to the nightmare which had become her life.
A week later…
“Are you sure? I am sure there are other places we can look. Other places we can go first.” Terran nudged Mac who was standing at the doorway from Water into Fire.
“No, I have to face this. We need to head to Fire, we all know she is being held there, she said it herself. We have already double checked everywhere else.”
“Look at him, Terran. The man is in bad shape. We have to find her soon or Mac will burn away.” Talon stood on the other side of Mac.
“I am not that bad…”
“Talon does have a point. Once we get to the Keep and make sure it’s safe, we have to do another session. Your skin is starting to burn away again.” River patted his shoulder.
“Fuck.”
“Yeah.” River smirked and then grimaced, lifting his hand away.
“Let’s go, he’s starting to ooze again, and I might throw up.” Talon pushed through the group and went through the gate.
“He’s a bit of a girl when it comes to blood, eh?” Terran walked through the gate.
“I wouldn’t say a girl, Araiya seems to handle it better then him.” River and Mac laughed and walked through to the other side.
When Mac finally stepped through the gate he stumbled into River, who had stopped in front of the gate. “Why did you stop?”
“I wanted to block your view and make sure you were ready.”
“I am ready,” Mac reassured him.
Talon walked over and faced Mac, blocking more of his view. “Before you look, I just want to warn you. This is where Araiya and your mother had their final moment.”
