Talon stormed up to the door screaming. “Araiya get out here. I know what you did. You can’t hide from it.” Talon pounded the door, which caused it to swing open. The handle, which he hadn’t noticed, was on the ground and the door was cracked, like it was kicked in. The others caught up enough to follow him into the cabin, that was torn apart.
“Looks like there was a fight.” River stepped over the broken pieces of the chair.
“If Araiya had in fact attacked Shavon, then there shouldn’t be any damage in here. There is a lot of blood in here.” Mac crouched.
“Shavon must have come here for Araiya and after the attack made her way back to our cabin,” Talon countered.
“It’s not her blood. There was also no blood in between your place and here. We would have smelled it.” Mac dipped a finger into a pool of blood. “This blood has started to go cold and tacky around the edges.” He played with the sticky blood between his thumb and finger. “This is a man’s blood. Not Dracoy, other. All of this blood is other, except for this, right here.” Mac stood and walked to a small pool at the front door. “This right here is Araiya’s blood. Shavon was never here. If any of you were thinking, you would have scented it.” Mac turned to Talon. “I am sorry for your loss brother, but if you were in your right mind, you would have noticed Araiya’s scent was missing from your home. It was at the door, but nowhere near Shavon. She also was covered with a man’s scent.”
“Stop saying my mate is a liar. She wouldn’t do that.”
“We are not saying she is a liar. What if she saw Araiya attack her? What if she saw Araiya’s darkness or whatever she called it? Or what if she just made the connection that you have been attacked three times since Araiya came into your life by this darkness and just wanted to protect you?” River countered. “What we see isn’t always the truth. We would never assume that Shavon would lie to you in her last breath.”
“Thank you!”
“But. You also have to understand where we are coming from.” River gripped his shoulder. “Instead of assuming this was a horrible attack, or Goddess forbid, assume that Shavon was just trying to protect you, you go on the attack of your close friend. Our mate. You have been screaming about how we are assuming your mate is a liar…but you want us to believe our mate is a murderer.”
“You barely even know your mate.” Talon snapped back as he shrugged off River’s hand.
“Why don’t we just go check.” Mac stood and walked out of the cabin.
“What does that mean?” Talon looked at the others,
“We have a little bit more than the average Dracoy, Talon. We can use the Elements to recreate.” River patted his shoulder as he moved toward the door.
“Recreate what?”
“Acts of violence, high emotion, or death leave a mark. Spirit remembers. We use the Elements to tap into spirit to watch what occurred in a space. Let’s go see the attack. You can stay outside so you don’t have to watch, but we can find some answers.”
“You want to watch Von die?”
“No brother, we want to see who attacked her.” River walked out. Talon stood still for a moment before he followed everyone back to the cabin where his love’s body still lay.
As Talon made his way over to his cabin, he heard the others talking, waiting. Terran landed softly next to him and shifted. “Are you alright?” He walked past him toward the cabin’s entrance.
“No. I don’t think I will ever be alright again.” Talon leaned his head back against the side of the place he had once called home. A place that would no longer be that for him.
“Why are you out here?” Terran stopped at the door.
“Did you see anything?” Talon changed the topic.
“Yes. There are tracks in the forest. Two horses pulled a heavy wagon out of there.”
“So, she escaped?”
“I know you are upset, but I won’t lie to you. It looks like she was dragged away from her cabin and into the wagon. I don’t know much about others, but it seemed more like she was taken, compared to her actually running away.” Terran walked back over and gripped his arms and leaned in. “I believe she saw what she saw, Talon. I just also happen to think what she saw was manipulated. I do not think she would lie to you in her dying breath.”
“Thank you. They are waiting for you inside.”
“Staying out here?”
“No, both of you, come inside.” Terran and Talon looked over at Mac in the doorway. His grim face made them both pause.
“Mac, you can’t expect him to want to go back in here.”
“Just get your asses in here, now!” River yelled from inside.
“Can you give me a minute?” Talon paced away as Terran headed in. Mac passed by him before shifting and flying into the air. River’s soft murmur filtered out of the room. River stayed in the cabin, and Terran came back out to stand next to him.
“You can come in.”
“No, I can’t face her again. I let her down, Terran. I was supposed to hold her close and protect her with everything I had, and I failed.”
“You didn’t fail her, Talon.”
“Yes, I did, I failed her because I felt a connection to a random girl. A new Chosen I was drawn to. More than my own mate. Goddess save me, but I was more protective of Araiya then Shavon. What does that make me?”
