“Well, I wish them the best for the next mate because we all know that person isn’t me. The dude hates me, and I have zero warm and fuzzies for that tool bag. Look I called you both here to ask you to come with, but I am leaving with or without you. I don’t want to be here anymore. I am over the disgusted looks from people who are supposed to actually love me. I asked Brooke to get me a bag to carry the book and some extra clothes in. I have also sent word to the kitchen that I need a lot of food so I can eat and then take the stuff that travels well with me. If you are coming, I suggest you collect your stuff because I am leaving within the hour. Also, Talon I know that River is your friend, but please don’t tell him. I don’t want to be stopped before we leave.”
“If this is what you want, I am in,” Shavon piped up.
“Yeah, me too. We are with you Araiya. We will go get ready.” Talon walked out the door and Shavon lingered.
“Look, I know I haven’t been the greatest friend here. I keep getting jealous over yours and Talon’s friendship. Like I said before I don’t feel the bond, so I figured he didn’t feel it either and you guys were getting so close. I didn’t know he felt a protector bond with you or else I wouldn’t have. He told me after you died the last time. If I knew beforehand, I would like to say that I would have been a better friend, a protector bond is super rare, but if I am honest, I probably would have still been jealous. I am working on it, and I just wanted to say that I am sorry. I will do better, forgive me?”
“Of course. I get it, and I don’t know what a protector bond is, I just know that I felt close with you guys.”
Shavon walked over and hugged her. “Thank you for understanding. Okay.” She stepped back. “I am going to catch up with Talon to get ready. Where is the original keep anyways?”
“Somewhere in the forest surrounding the Chosen Village. Apparently, it is surrounded by fog. It’s going to be an adventure just finding the place. I am very hopeful that by the time we find it I will have my power back and it will help us figure shit out.” Araiya shrugged and Shavon shook her head and left.
Araiya honestly wouldn’t care if she had to go alone but having Shavon and Talon there to teach her and keep her company sounded way better than stumbling around in the dark alone
Once she had everything ready Araiya peeked out her door and saw one of her supposed mates leaning against the wall down the hall. She quickly closed her door when he looked down her way.
Fuck, how was she supposed to sneak past that douche canoe? At least it wasn’t River, she actually really liked him. It was just the others that she had zero inclination to know. Since they treated her like trash why should she go out of her way to talk to them? Araiya slumped into the chair by her door trying to find some way to get out of here when Shavon came stumbling in so fast, she landed in her lap.
“Shavon what the fuck?” Araiya started to chuckle.
“Shush you. Talon sent me the long way.” Shavon caught her breath. “He told me to tell you that he will distract Terran, your lovely piece of meat at the end of the hall, so I can bring you out the long way to the back of the keep. Apparently, there is a lagoon we can swim out of if you can hold your breath long enough.”
“Thank the Goddess one of us was thinking because I just peeked and was at a loss. How is he going to catch up?”
“He said once he sees us leave, he will slip away. Either way I know the way to the room we are supposed to go. We are not supposed to wait in the keep.”
“Okay get off me.” Araiya chuckled as she pushed Shavon up. They both stood at the door, peeked out, and saw that Talon had Terran facing the other direction. Terran started to turn when he heard the door, but Talon started to ask him something and he turned back. The girls squeezed out the door, quietly ran to the next hallway, and turned the corner before Terran noticed. They ran through the keep, peeking around corners and keeping an eye out for anyone who would rat them out to River. The bag on Araiya’s back thumped against her and she slammed into a wall.
“Shush, for someone that wants to get away you sure are loud,” Shavon whisper harshly.
They both choked back their giggles as they turned into the large cavern Talon had showed Shavon earlier that day. It was pitch black and the two girls slowly entered the room holding hands so they wouldn’t lose each other. Deeper they went into the cavern.
“Are you able to see stuff a little or are my eyes adjusting to the darkness…?” Shavon trailed off.
“There is light up ahead.” The two girls started moving quicker towards the light. At last they came to the lagoon, the light coming from the water itself. The two walked to the edge and looked down.
Shavon squeaked at what she saw. “Hell no. Araiya I love you but that is a fucking shark.”
The great white swam in a slow circle. “That is Athan. Fuck, he is River’s familiar. We will be sold out before we even get out of the keep.”
Young Mother. Athan contacted me as a way to speak with you, are you near each other.
Yes Warryn, I am standing at the lip of the lagoon in the keep.
May I ask why?
Araiya replayed her memories of what happened at the keep for the Water elemental.
Ah, I see. Well at least my son isn’t as slow as the others. Athan wanted you to know that he will not betray your trust to River. He may serve my son as familiar, but he is afraid of the other.
What do you mean?
As soon as you entered the water, a ripple went out, and one came back as an answer. Athan is slightly afraid of the one that answered. Which to be fair, he should be. He might be the king of the ocean, but she is the queen of the deep and takes no prisoners.
Who?
It doesn’t matter right now. Anyways you are safe to slip away. Athan will protect you and the other Chosen. He will take you to the shore closest to the doorway so you can escape without notice.
Thank you, both of you, you really didn’t have to help me. I mean River will be angry will he not?
He has been angry at me; he is my son, but I think he will understand why you left. You don’t feel safe, and you need space. He will not hate you for that request, he is a good man, Araiya. You will find that out in your own time, I promise. Stay safe Young Mother. Call if you need me, and I will answer.
The Water elemental drew from her mind, and she turned to her friend. Shavon had frozen at the lip of the water. All color had drained from her face as she watched the shark slowly circle.
“Shavon, it’s fine. Athan is a friend. He has come to take us to the shore by the gate to leave.” Shavon looked up, her face filled with panic. “I promise you will be okay. I will get in first and show you, okay.” Shavon slowly nodded, and Araiya reached over and squeezed her hands.
